BAUMEL from Buczaz #galicia

Leslie Reich <LReich@...>

Date 11 Jan 2001
From: Leslie Reich
Subject BAUMEL >from Buczaz

Jeff Balabon asked :

I am searching for any info about Chaim LANGINGER, his oldest daughter,
Miriam and her husband - Yehoshua BAUMOEL. All killed in the Holocaust.

Also searching for information on the DISTENFELD family >from Sambor,
Lvov,
Buczach.

There was a Rabbi Yehoshua Baumel who was born in Buczaz, Galicia in 1913.
He perished in the Holocaust, Auschwitz I think. He was married to a Chana
Shapiro, d. of a Rabbi.

This Y.B. wrote a biography in Yiddish of Rabbi Meir Shapiro the founder of
the famous
Yeshivah in Lublin (building still standing) in the 1920s.

This work was translated into English and published ny Philip Feldheim in
1994.
It contains a forward by Y.B's brother, Rabbi Yosef Baumol in USA who may
well be still alive. The forward has biographical material and photographs
regarding the author.

Hope you find a connection

Czwal #galicia

Suzan Wynne <srwynne@...>

The surname Czwal is the Polish pronunciation of Schwall. When Jews
in Galicia were compelled to take surnames by the Austrian government,
the surnames were to be in the German language. A small percentage of
Jews already had surnames....some derived >from the Polish language and
some >from other languages, including Yiddish and very occasionally,
Hebrew. Therefore, you can assume that the name was probably Schwall
while Galicia was Austrian. After the first war, some Jews became
active in Polish nationalist movements and adopted Polish spellings for
their surnames. Others did so for economic or social reasons. There is
a lot of information about Rzeszow residents within Gesher Galicia's
membership and there is a Rzeszow group that has produced an index to a
partial list of pre-1877 vital records of the Jews of the city.

EDENSARA@...

Dear Folks,

I have been advised by JRI-Poland that the Rzeszow registers should be
available for indexing within the next few weeks. (The registers had been
moved >from Rzeszow to Przemysl for fumigation as part of the Polish State
Archives ongoing project to protect and restore those registers needing
attention.) Work will start on the indexing at that time.

Please stay tuned for further announcements about this important and exciting

Constance,

I guess MArtha's note got me thinking, too. I do not know how to help, but I
would like to. My Jewish ancestors in this country are largely buried in
Bay City michigan's Hebrew Cemetery. Is there some way I could volunteer to
be responsible for getting pictures of those tombstones??? Would that be what
is needed and would it help? Unfortunately I am not able to translate...

RSVP,

Terry

Ballabon, Jeff <JBallabon@...>

Thank you, Leslie. I have in fact met with that Yehoshua Baumoel's brother
(the biographer). All the facts fit perfectly (age, location, manner of
death, etc.) except that they were married to different people. The brother
recalls no other local Yehoshua Baumoels, I am hopeful, however that there
is some family connection, on the reasonable assumption that cousins of the
same generation frequently shared first names for a deceased common
grandfather or great-grandfather.

Thanks again. This really has been a tantalizing lead...

Ernie FLIEGEL, born Itzek FLUGELTAUB in Galiti Siret, Romania on May 13,
1904. His father, Herman FLUGELTAUB, was born in West Galicia, on Nov 15,
1874, in a town the name of which is illegible on the only reliable record I
have of his birthplace, the ship passenger list >from the S.S. Saint Andrew
