INTRO Researching the Phillips Family from Germany and New London CT #germany

Maxine Vasquez <mabvasquez@...>

Hello GerSig,
I just joined the group. I consider myself to be a novice in doing German
Jewish Genealogy research. I live in Baltimore MD, USA. My native language
is English. I consider myself reasonably competent in using a computer.
My experience in using the Internet is also reasonably good.

I have identified the names and birth and death dates of my great
grandparents.

My primary research goals now are to find out: my paternal great
grandmother's maiden name and the names of her siblings. I'm also
interested in the names of my paternal grandfather's siblings.

My JGFF Researcher ID number is 472799.

PHILLIPS - Germany to America in 1866. My great grandparents, Morris and
Annie. I doubt that they came together as they married abt 10 year later in
New London, CT. Thank you kindly,

Maxine Basson Vasquez, Baltimore, MD USA mabvasquez@gmail.com

Re: Shapiro family name #ukraine

Hello Gayle,

While I agree with the replies I've seen to the list about the Shapira (and variations) surname, your case appears a bit different based on what you wrote. The Shapira line described were not Kohanim which it appears yours was. I can't find the reference at the moment, but some individuals who married into the Shapira family adopted the surname due to its illustrious nature. One such example are the Kahana-Shapira (and variations) who were Kohanim, some of whom were also noted rabbis.

Aaron Slotnik

Are there any SHAPIRO experts out there? Where did the last name start? My branch started in Stolbsty, Belarus and in the Minsk area,,,last in Europe in Lubny, Ukraine. They were also known as Kahn-Shapiro or in the UK as Cohen. The wife came >from Timikovitz as Moskovitz. Date circa 1800.
Since the great grandfather died in Lubny,,Benjamin's father was Aron and mother Nushke.
Any help will be appreciated..Respond privately unless it helps others..

Re: Shapiro #ukraine

David Osachy <osachy@...>

That's the folk etymology I was talking about. The old Jewish name
for the town of Speyer, is pretty much identical to a very nice
word in Hebrew and Aramaic that translates as "handsome" or
"pleasing."

One can easily see the incentive for traditional Jews to attribute the
name Shapiro to this Hebrew word. It's a very nice word plus it's a
Jewish word. That sort of thing happened often with names, and even
with regular words and phrases in Yiddish. One could say that our
ancestors had the desire to Judaize everything in their common
experience.

The problem in this, as in so many other cases, is that it is not
historically accurate. The town was called Spira or Spire or Spiro
centuries before Jews came to live there, and the rabbinical family
that adopted the surname came >from the town.

Whether people named Shapiro are also handsome and pleasing, I will
leave for others to judge :)

What about a Hebrew origin such as Sapir? I've always been under the
impression that this is the "root" of Shapiro.

Researching FRAJDENRAJCH from Poland #poland

Yohanan

We are researching FRAJDENRAJCH family >from Poland.
We know about Mendel and Eva FRAJDENRAJCH and 3 children:
Abraham, Gittle and Chaim (all probably born circa 1900). Mendel's last
known address in about 1930 was in Groschow, Warsaw.

They could have come to Warsaw in late 1800s >from another location.
We know about Abraham, who lived later in England and Australia, though he
did not leave any information about his FRAJDENRAJCH family in Poland.

If it rings a bell please let me know.

Can someone translate the word Zastrselona. It relates to the cause of death on a
1916 Polish death record in the city of Lviv. I have looked in a Polish to English
medical dictionary and cannot find it listed.
