To all JewishGeners

It is with deep grief that I have to tell you that Phyllis Kramer
just passed away. She has been a loyal and deeply loving friend to
JewishGen, to JewishGen education and to those who worked with her
and to all her students .

She will be mourned.

Dear JewishGen Community,

With tremendous pain and sadness, I regret to inform you that Phyllis
Kramer, our beloved Director of Education, has passed away.

Not many were aware of this, but Phyllis was diagnosed with an
extremely aggressive illness shortly before the Cleveland conference.
Phyllis shared the news with me, but asked that I not publicize it.

Over the past 6 weeks, Phyllis did a lot of work, together with Nancy
Holden, to perpetuate our educational offerings, and more information
will be shared in the coming days. But for now, we join together in
great sadness and mourning for someone who dedicated so much of
herself to the broader Jewish genealogical community.

I last spoke to Phyllis a few days ago, and last saw her in person a
couple of weeks ago. She was an extremely loyal friend, mentor and
role model to me personally, and I know that she will be deeply,
deeply missed by all of us.

More information will be shared, including what we can do to honor
Phyllis's memory, in the days ahead.

With tears.

Robert Frazer asked for updated information on my posting >from last year's

Unfortunately, both bills were voted down last February. See:

While Chancellor Kurtz was in favor, there is a new chancellor since June 3,

The Counsel General I was in correspondence with last year has been
transferred to the Austrian Embassy in Australia. I have written to his
successor in Washington DC and if/when I learn if the new government is
interested in this and will introduce similar legislation, I will post it
here on the Austria-Czech SIG.

The aforementioned article >from February 2019 says at the end, prompted by
the opposition's bills, interior minister Herbert Kickl announced they
would bring forwardctheir own draft legislation on the matter by the end of
2019.

Yes. You need proof but it is possible to reclaim Austrian citizenship.
Call your local Austrian Consulate and I am sure they will provide the
particulars of what you must do. It will involve a lot of running
around to proved you are a legitimate child of your parents and that
your parents were Austrian citizens.
Good luck.

Some time ago, it was reported on JewishGen that the
Austrian government was preparing a Bill that would allow
descendants of exiled Austrian Jews to apply for
citizenship. At last reading (maybe a year ago) it was still
ongoing. Does anyone have updated information on this
process?

Is there any English person on the forum who has gained dual

I was in contact with a Sozialarbeiter at the ESRA Psychosoziales
Zentrum in Vienna about this issue in May. What he wrote is this:
"The Austrian government has announced a law change for descendants of
Austrians who were forced to escape because of national socialist
persecution. According to this expected law it should make no
difference if the Austrian origin is derived >from the maternal or
paternal line. However the law change has not yet come into force and
we do not have reliable information when it will come. We hope that it
will come until the end of 2019."

I gathered >from talking with people in Vienna that the outcome of this
new law is far >from certain. I was advised to get in touch with the
ESRA again in November to inquire.

Need German translation on View Mate #general

Karen Schneider <kgschneider@...>

Greetings,
Looking for information about Leopold Lucas who married Dorothea Janower. Have
posted a 2-page German marriage record which can be found at the following links on
View Mate: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75043
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75044

Any names, dates, places, relationships that it might contain would be most helpful
to learn. Unfortunately, the image of the document is not the best. But glad to
have found it. Both Leopold and Dorothea died in the Shoah and there is a Nazi
stamped document on p.2 apparently giving Dorothea the name of Sara which had to
have been added long after the marriage. Would also appreciate learning what it
contains.
Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page.
Thank you very much.

Visit JewishGen's New Website #ciechanow #poland

Nancy Siegel

JewishGen is pleased to announce our newly designed website at
www.JewishGen.org. We commissioned the creation of a new landing page
to serve as a launching point for the main components of the website.
The site is built on a modern, secure platform, which is beneficial
for a number of reasons, including:

*It has a more intuitive and user-friendly design,
*It is mobile-responsive, and
*It has a more familiar platform, which will make it easier for us to
find qualified consultants, contractors and volunteers to help us in
the future.

This is not the final plan. It's a stop-gap redesign that addresses
some of the shortcomings of our website by creating a visually
appealing, mobile-friendly, and easy to navigate homepage that
researchers can utilize to find key components on the JewishGen site.
While we attracted approximately one million unique visitors to the
JewishGen site last year, only a small portion of this group actually
registered or became regular users. We anticipate that an enhanced
website will improve these results.

Specifically, we hope the new landing page will help guide researchers to:

*Search the online collection
*Locate ancestral communities
*Explore life in their ancestral communities
*Join our discussion groups
*Volunteer, and
*Donate.

Over the next two months, we will begin crafting a proper technology
strategy, which will include our website and databases. In the
meantime, however, this new landing page will immediately help
researchers, while also demonstrating JewishGen's strategic focus.

Thank you to everyone on our staff and volunteer leadership team for
their suggestions and contributions to making this happen. Special
thanks to Scott Seidenstock, Gary Sandler, and Warren Blatt.

Please enjoy the site and visit www.JewishGen.org now. Feedback and
suggestions will be most welcome!
