The Great Galician Indexing Race is on #galicia

Willie46@...

It was just two weeks ago that Jewish Records Indexing - Poland announced the
commencement of Phase two of the indexing of records for 90 district and
subdistrict towns in the former Galician provinces of Lwow, Tarnopol, and
Stanislawow. Please remember that other nearby towns and villages registered
their vital records in these district and subdistrict towns.

Volunteers have come forward as Town Leaders for 22 more towns and the Great
Galician Indexing Race is on. As of March 25, 2001, eight towns have
qualified for priority in the Phase 2 indexing. They are:

1. Obertyn
2. Bialy Kamien
3. Nadworna
4. Bobrka
5. Grodek Jagiellonski
6. Ulaszkowce
7. Bukaczowce
8. Sokolowka

There are still 56 orphan towns looking for a Town Leader to ensure that the
records for that town will be indexed.

The Excel spreadsheet, which includes a good deal of information about the
records available for these 90 district and subdistrict towns and a status
report for each town has been updated. You will find this spreadsheet at the
Great Galician Indexing Race web page at
<http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/galicia/index.htm> by clicking on the
hyperlink "90 towns" in the first paragraph.

For more information about the AGAD Archives Project, please see the AGAD
webpage at <http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/agad/>.

If you are interested in being a Town Leader or have any questions, please

I am now about to write to the Kriegsarchiv in Wien to establish if they

tradition.

The name Leo (BROJDE) #galicia

Richard Cooper <ric@...>

Leo could well be a translation of Aria (Arieh,Arje,Aryeh) which is Hebrew
or Yiddish (I forget which) for 'lion',often in combination with Leib.
PS. There will definitely be a Galicia SIG meeting at London2001 in July.
See you all there!

HIAS and Connecticut #general

Olderman, Richard <Richard.Olderman@...>

All my grandparents arrived in New York during the period 1886-1890.
Within a short time after their arrival, they all ended up living in
Connecticut. Only one grandparent had obvious connections there. Does anyone
know if during this time period HIAS was affirmatively directing new
arrivals to the nutmeg state? Thank you.

transit info in the UK #general

Daniel S. Katz <dsk@...>

Hi,

I have some relatives that I have placed on a ship >from Liverpool
to New York in 1901. I would now like to see if there is any
information available about their arrival or stay in the UK, or
how they got there >from Romania.

Are there any suggestions about records I could search?

I've heard that there are some departure records for Liverpool.
Is this correct, and if so, how does one search these records?

Thanks,
Dan Katz (dsk@lugh.cacr.caltech.edu)

MODERATOR NOTE: A search of the JewishGen Discussion Group Archives at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.isa?jg~jgsys~archives> for
Liverpool passenger lists yields numerous hits. You might also consult
the JewishGen InfoFile < http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/uk-rec.txt>,
which contains information on outbound passenger lists >from the UK.

Hi Geeners
I just got back >from my local FHL to view the films that I had ordered on
the Mogilev Birth records. To my great disappointment they were in
Russian, silly me, I thought that I might be able by some miracle to find
the name's of my grandparents. Is there going to be any project to
translate all this info into English.

Spain--Three Towns #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I am trying to locate three towns in Spain. One is called "Caces."
It is supposed to be in or near Oriedo, Spain. Caces, is said to be
the ancestral home of people with the surnames Kazez, Kazes, Cazes,
Cases, Cacez, Cazese, Quases, Gaczes, Avencaces, Avincaces,
Avincacec, and Avincazes.

The other two towns I am looking for are Aragon and Lerida.

Does anyone know the location of these cities? (If possible, I'd
also like to find a historical map that would show these cities.)

I recently received this message >from an acquaintance in England:

Dear Mrs Berliner,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I have recently finished reading Grade's book. I would like to know more
about his relationship with his teacher, the 'Chazon Ish'. Do you know
if his widow is still alive or where his archives have been deposited?
Thanks as always for your help,
The book being referred to is Chaim Grade's "My Mother's Sabbath Days", a
memoir about his growing up in pre-Holocaust Vilna. Does anyone have any
information that might help?

Please respond privately.
