My step-grandmother's name was Sophie and her Yiddish name was Sprintzel. I
do know that when people Americanized their names, they usually took names
that began with the same letters as their Yiddish names.

Subject: JRI-Poland Krakow Marriage/Banns Indexing Update #poland

Judy Wolkovitch <judywolk@...>

Jewish Records Indexing – Poland is pleased to announce that the huge task
of indexing the Krakow Banns and Marriage registers is almost complete. We
regret the delay in posting the indices to the web site but the books are
massive and the handwriting is very difficult to read.

The data is now in quality control but the end is in sight. To minimize the potential for errors in the final database, all the records have been
combined in one large file. Various techniques are being employed to enable us to spot names that ‘don’t fit’ the normal pattern, typos that are
inevitable in such as massive project and spelling differences that resulted >from the difficulty in reading the handwritten entries. The more we study these files, the more we marvel at the eagle-eye, persistence and dedication of Adriana, our multi-lingual transliterator who is handling this complex indexing.

There is additional great news: another large register has been found
at the Jewish Historical Institute with a substantial number of banns
for the Progressive Synagogue for the years 1897 to 1936.

Once more we express our thanks to all those who contributed to this
remarkable project. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the Jewish
Genealogical Society, Inc. (New York) whose generous donation enabled Jewish Records Indexing – Poland to launch this project. And, of course,
we thank both the Jewish Historical Institute, Warsaw, which houses these registers and the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project for their help in coordinating the work of JRI-Poland for this project.

My mother's grandmother (Nanny) on her father's side told my mother that
Nanny's sister, named Jenny SCHEIN (spelling?), and her husband Sam were
dancers on the London stage and danced with Charlie Chaplin. >from what I
have read about Chaplin's life, this would most likely have been when
Chaplin was young (1880's-1890's). My mom's Nanny was born in 1868 and I
don't know if Jenny was older or younger.
Thanks for any thoughts as to how I might verify or dismiss this
evidence.
Sincerely, Cindy Weaver

Re: [query: Anyone else have mtDNA haplotype H with 3 C mutations on 189, 356, 362] #dna

judy snyder <jart59@...>

I think you know more about this than I do.

My certificate has ten columns numbered ten thru one-hundred and each
column has four seperate series of letters. I have a red "c" at the
front of the last series on number 20. Does anyone else out there
have one of these?

What is the Cambridge Reference Sequence and where can I go to read
up on it?

I hope someone sees this letter.

Sincerely, Yudy

Mr. Johansson,
Yes, but it is a big mystry and I don't know where to get info
to compare my chart to. I have written letters to ask about what it
all means and have gotten no response.

When you take the DNA test through this organization you receive
results >from both parents.
Hope that helps.
Sincerely, Yudy

Dear sirs,

I am new to this group.
As far as I know matrilineal descent is usually part of being Jewish, but
I doubt that this was always the case. There might have been many
non-Jewish women married into and accepted by the Jewish community.
Has there been any research done in the field of Jewish mtDNA?
If so is the case, it is possible to have a test done?

sincerely,
Conrad Johansson

It seems that Attila Rona is wrong about the law
I intereviwed my father at length about that point and this what I got:
a)The hungarian law said that a person is considered Hungarian if his father is Hungarian.
This what somewhat uncclear since you had to prove that Adam was Hungarian, and therefore
an administartive regulation was issued that that it is enough to prove that your male
ancestor was Hungarian in 1851 when they start issuing birth certificates. Hungarian in
1851 meant that the persom was born in the area of greater Hungary.
b)On top of it by the Trianon treaty, you were Hungarian if you could prove that at the
time of Trianon treaty(1920) you had some municipal registration in smaller Hungary.
My father could not produce his ggfateer birth certificate, and so in 1938 he was called to
the police(or some other similar institution) and was given a formal notice of him being
expelled >from Hungary. Nothing further was done about it. In october 1939 he fortunately
decided of his own free will to leave the country for Palestine.
