I have relatives that made several transits, up to 3. Usually men, they
came over to work, went home and got married, came back and worked, went
back and brought their wives and small children over. You may want to look
for other sailings to see if they made multiple trips.

Dear Genners,
I have found 2 passengers on the Ellis Island records who were naturalized
in the USA before they arrived at Ellis Island e.g. William Orgel arrived in
1920 at Ellis Island at the age of 43. The ship manifest also records that
he was naturalized in the District Court Elizabeth N.J.in 1911? How could he
have been naturalized before he arrived in N.J ? Also the records show the
name & address of the person with whom he supposedly stayed on his arrival.
How can I follow this up?

Need help with hebrew translation -VM 589/90 #galicia

Francois Chetreanu <chetreanu.thesis@...>

Dear All,

First I want to thank again all of you who helped me with the previous
documents that I posted on Viewmate (the tombstones and the postcards in
yiddish). You anwsered with much details and you were very generous.

Today I post one other document (in two parts) written in hebrew (quite
long). I believe this is the rabbi certificate of Jacob Shayevitz
(Chayevitz). Jacob was born in Jerusalem and it seems that he studied with
the Rav Kook. It is very interesting for me because J. Shayevitz was the
rabbi of Cherbourg between 1925 and 1933.

Philadelphia arrivals #galicia

Eve Greenfield <eve_rachel@...>

I can confirm that at least some Jewish immigrants
arrived in the U.S. at the port of Philadelphia, as to
the best of my knowledge, three out of my four
grandparents either arrived in Philadelphia
themselves, or were the first generation born in the
U.S. of parents who arrived in Philadelphia.

Only two of the three families (the RUTTENBERG and the
CORNRICH/KORNREICH families) originated in Galicia;
the others (GREENFIELD) were >from Riga. I still have
lots of family in the Phily/South New Jersey area,
though.

Galician districts for purposes of JRI #galicia

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

My own impression is that records in subordinate towns is not an
unambiguous matter. For instance it seems that Skalat's death
records include those for Kozowka, but there is nary a Kozowka birth
record in Skalat. (Supposedly they are in Miklunice.)

Similarly, there are some Grimaylow records in Skalat, but other
Grimaylow births are not there and I don't know where they are.

In Rozdol, there are birth records >from Mikolayev, but not >from
Brezdowice - despite the fact that Brezdowice in between Rozdol and
Mikolayev.

Catholic given name/Jewish surname #galicia

I am sorry for posting again; I promise this is my last post for a while.
Thanks to all who have been helpful.

I have my great-grandmother's funeral Mass card, on which her name is Marya
Bogielczyk. The card is in Polish, and she died 4 Kwietnia (April) 1932. I
know Marya's last name was Rubin because that was on her daughter's (my
Grandmom's) death certificate. This is a great mystery. Why would someone
name a little Jewish girl "Maria?" I do not think it was ever Miriam. This
woman apparently lived and was buried as a Catholic. The only clue I have is
my grandmother's younger sister who died a few years ago. When we asked her
if her mother was Jewish, she paused for a long moment, then nodded
slightly. She was an elderly lady and devout lifelong Catholic... so we did
not press the issue. (Her mother died when she was only 14.) I am thinking
that Maria Rubin may have been the child of a mixed marriage, of Jewish
father and Catholic mother. Did such marriages happen in Poland in the late
19th century?

Surname Sherman #galicia

KilgoreJ@...

Hi everyone. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Sherman and she came
>from Galicia. I was always told that she was >from the Austrian section,
however, I recently learned that she spoke Polish and Hungarian in
addition to German and Yiddish. Sherman is an extremely common name and
this has made it very difficult for me to find her in any records. I was
hoping someone could provide me with some insight into how the name may
have been spelled by Galicians.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
