Found Rabbi Michael SMALL! #general

hennynow

As always, JewishGenners came to the rescue! Within one day of posting my
message asking for help in locating Rabbi Michael Small in Chicago, I
received six helpful replies and am happy to report that I spoke with
the good Rabbi on the phone an hour ago.

While he was not able to give me any information about my late
relative, "Shochet" Binyamin Beinish Kanter/Chanania and his wife Ida,
Rabbi Small suggested checking with Chicago cemeteries, and I guess
that's what I'll have to do next.

So, please scratch my query of June 7. With warmest thanks to Rabbi P.
Lefkowitz in Chicago and 'Genners Janice Goldman, Cyndee Meystel,
Marilen Pitler, Al Yellon, Vivian Finkelstein, and Israel Pikholz, and
best wishes to all for a "gut voch,"

Cordially,

Henny

Genners,

Mixed in my collection of photographs are two of GITTEL & MOSHE WEINSTEIN
from Kiev circa mid 19th century, judging >from the type of photographs and
the clothing which reminds me of the Civil War era. Do these names ring a
bell with anyone? I assume they're ancestors of mine, but I have no clue.
Please respond to me privately. Thanks.

Searching fofr Ruben Rosenberg #general

Gunther Stieneke <gunther@...>

I am trying to assist a 92 year old lady find her nephew living in
Israel. Rubin is the son of Elisa ROSENBERG. Her maiden name was Ilse
BLUMENSTIEL, born in Mainz, Germany, about 1906. She immigrated to
Israel around 1931 and was known as Elisa Rosenberg. She died about two
years ago.

My friend has only a telephone number for Ruben::" 06-6064-628" .
Calling that number, with or without the first zero, is unsuccessful.
The number is either wrong, incomplete or has been disconnected. It is
known that Ruben lived on a Kibbutz ( spelling?) in 1962 but the
location of it is unknown.

If anyone can help, or have a suggestion: Please contact me and I shall
pass on the message.

Miami lookup requested -- Riverside Alton Road Chapel #general

Bernie Hirsch <bernie06@...>

Hello,

I found a small obituary in the Miami Herald on 12 Sep 1981 for my
cousin:

"Alexander SILVERMAN, 84, of Miami Beach. Private Services, Riverside
Alton Road Chapel."

Does anyone know what this chapel is about and if it indicates where
Alexander Silverman would be buried? I'd like to see if he has any
surviving relatives and also I'd like to find his death record or
gravestone to verify his parents' names or father's name. Possibly
there is a Jewish newspaper that might have more information or
possibly a synagogue there, that might be affiliated with this
"Riverside Alton Road Chapel".

Any help would be kindly appreciated.

Thanks and kind regards,
Bernie Hirsch Dallas, Texas USA

Are the mailings of the Ukraine Discussion group available in a digest
format - one consolidated mailing per day like the Belarus and Galician
groups? I recently joined and I find that on some days I get 3-6 emails and
with all the headers and footers, it is too much! Help!

Russian Uniform Identification #ukraine

Jerry Schneider <jschneider@...>

Once again, a huge thank you to all the 'genners who assisted me in
identifying the uniform worn by my great-uncle in a recently-discovered
Aizenberg family photograph posted on ViewMate as image VM1478.

As most everyone pointed out, the uniform was indeed NOT a military one but
a school uniform instead. And with a suggestion >from Olga Davydova that I
magnify the waist belt area, I was able to identify the cyrillic letters
OIG which, in all likelihood, was for the school Odesskaia Imperatorskaia
Gimnazia (the Odessa Imperial Gimnazium). Now I know that the Aizenberg
family moved >from Pinsk to Odessa much earlier than previous thought.

Thanks again all ...

- jerry

Identity of Hussar Regiment #general

Elless <elless@...>

My ggf is pictured at View Mate image VM1501 in a hussar uniform.
Unfortunately, I cannot identify the regiment because color is
important. However, there is a large emblem on the hat which someone may
be able to identify. The picture was taken in about 1876, the time of
the Russo-Turkish War. I think that there was a regiment known as the
Grodno Hussars, but I have never seen a picture of their uniform.
My ggf was >from Warsaw and had family in Lodz.

Re: Locating a town #poland

Kris Murawski <kris.murawski@...>

Our assumptions are: 1) that Grandfather Joel and Hirsch came over first
and
used their original name, Grabski, and once in the US changed it to Gross
then, when the rest of the family came over, they told them to come as
Gross
(assuming we have the right records for all).
2)The 2 younger sisters were sent with a couple who lived in nearby Plock
and listed their town as Plock, also.

Are these assumptions reasonable and can anyone tell me how I can pinpoint
the town they came from?

Donna Gewertz
These assumptions sound reasonable to me.
I found twenty localities, towns or villages, of the name of Aleksandrow on
the interactive map of Poland (http://www.pilot.pl/). There are also four
Aleksandrowos. The town you are looking for is possibly Aleksandrow Lodzki
(also known as Aleksandrowka). In 1909, the Jewish population of Aleksandrow
Lodzki numbered 3,061 (24.1% of the total population). The Mormons have
Jewish records >from Aleksandrow Lodzki for the years 1826-1876.
Good luck, it seems you may be on the right track.

I uploaded a file to the ViewMate site
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html that I believe is an 'exit
visa' (in Russian) >from Warsaw, Russia (now Poland) in 1912/13. My father

family and I am trying to get enough information to trace my roots. The
original of this document has been lost and the only thing I have is the

If anyone can furnish anything >from this file, I would be very appreciative.
The document number is VM1500. Thanks.
