Seeking information on HOFFMAN family in Stettin #germany

Ann Lewin

I am searching for information on the following people >from Stettin Germany
which is now Poland. It is not in Polish database or on any microfilm that
I have found. I thought perhaps someone had a copy of something that lists
these people:

Dagobert HOFFMAN Leo HOFFMAN Martha HOFFMAN George HOFFMAN Edith HOFFMAN
Hildegarde HOFFMAN Siegfried HOFFMAN Ella HOFFMAN Siegbert ROSAM Peter ROSAM
Ralph LEWIN Bernard LEWIN

All were living in Stettin before the war. I have written to the town of
Stettin now re-named but received no answer to any of my querys. I even
wrote to someone who said she could find the answers and information that I
needed such as birthdates, addresses etc. I sent her a 50 dollar deposit and a
notorized statement that these were my relatives.

I received a note back that she was going to search records. This was two
years ago----so far no information. Please if any of you can help with
suggestions I would appreciate it. I am homebound and on oxygen and just
trying to leave a little family history for my grandchildren.. I have been
at it for 5 years. Have traced the Lewin family back to 1823 when Jakob
LEWIN was born but have no way of finding out name of parents. He was born
in Brandenberg/Havel and lived most of his life in Halle Saale. He died in
1900 which was all that the city archives could tell me. The Jewish Museu
there only had burial records and did not include his name.

Most of the HOFFMAN family died in the Holocaust as well as later
generations of LEWIN. This I got >from Yad Veshem. My interest in LEWIN
does go back to finding out names of parents and siblings. My interest in
Hoffman also goes back about that far. Present day information I have but
things like birth records, parents, siblings and families do not. Any help
appreciated!!!

Re: Mother's name on stone #general

Keep in mind that before surnames became such an integral part of our lives,
the father's name was a means of identification. The mother's name would not
necessarily have added to that. So leaving out the mother's name was not an
insult to the female role, just not a necessary part of the ID. (And an extra
expense to boot!)

Now that the surname has taken on the significance of an ID, it makes sense
that we acknowledge both parents as long as we acknowledge either.

Last year I had a gravestone put up for my older brother. In Hebrew it gave
his name and both our parents’ names. Agreed, it didn’t used to be
customary but times are changing.

Paktu Krow #poland

Jacob D. Goldstein <jake@...>

Fellow genners,

In an 1827 marriage record >from Siennica, both the groom's family and
the bride's family are described as earning a living >from "Paktu
Krow." The groom's family is said to be "we wsi Wola Sufczynska
zamieszkalych z Paktu Krow utrzymuianjch," and the father of the bride
is also "z Paktu Krow utrzymuiancego." He and his family resided nearby,
in Lasomin.

Does anyone know what "Paktu Krow" might mean? Could it have been the
name of an enterprise? A social program?

Siennica, Wola Sufczynska, and Lasomin are about 40 km ESE of Warszawa.

I will very much appreciate any pointers you can give me.

DUDOCK who were they and where from #poland

By _OMaR_

For several years now, I have been trying to trace my
great grand parents. Supposedly they came >from the
town (shtetl?) of Chechanowtze (Chechanowietz,
Chechanovtze) in Russian-Poland, about 1867, astride
the twin provinces of Grodno and Lomze, by the Narev
river.

I have never been able to find a town of that name and
neither have I ever located their name ( DUDOCK)
anywhere in Poland. Nor does it sound Polish. The only
place I have ever seen it was in Holland, but I've
found no connection. I also cannot find them here in
the US and am not sure if they arrived with their
family or if the cildren arrived without them.
Has anyone ever heard of that name or the town?
There are some DUDoCKS ( a few) in the US but they
don't seem to be connected to me either.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
