Re: Need help with translation of email message in Polish--Thank you and follow-up #galicia

Mike Kalt <mkalt@...>

Thank you to the several people who provided (or volunteered to provide)
summary translations of the e-mail I received >from Dr. Zielinski. The
message described a ceremony placing a monument at Hobotlow, just outside
Stryy, where several thousand Jews were murdered. He was also trying to
contact Uriel Zur-Schutzer, head of the Stryj Landsmanschaften in Israel to
give him the news, but did not have his address.

As it turns out I traveled to Stryj last year with a ShtetlSchleppers group,
and we visited Hobotlow. At that time we remarked that a monument of some
type was really needed to memorialize the thousands of people who died
there--but we had no idea that Dr. Zielinski was actually in the process of
having one erected, so this was good news for me and all people connected
with Stryy. And in another piece of good news, I happened to have an
address for Uriel Zur-Schutzer, so Dr. Zielinski will be able to contact
him.

Thanks again to everyone who made this exchange possible!

Dear Sir,

I've obtain your email address via Internet.
I'd like to let you known that on June 10 took place erection of the
symbolic memorial stone on the execution grounds in Holobutow (5 km distance
from Stryj).
This event had an extensive coverage by Polish, Ukrainian and Austrian
media.and currently Jewish media are also preparing articles which will be
published shortly.
Lwow Rabbi took part in stone erection, many Jewish kids >from the Lwow
region
and VIPs >from Poland, Ukraine and Austria (my residence place) and in the
presence of the last Jewish resident of Stryj, Mr. Jozef Feuer.

I am a writer. In 1998 my book "Holobutow" in Polish and German was
published by Krakowskie Wydawnictwo
Edukacyjne ISBN 83-86949-10-4
All printing of my book has been sold, beside the fact that it has been
published in large edition
Following book publishing I have been engaged in the organization efforts of
the erection of the memorial stone in Holobutow, and I have visited
Holobutow several times.

My Father is buried there. He was shot on September 1, 1941 during First
"Aktion" in Stryj

All what happened in Holobutow on June 10, 2001 took place thanks to my
initiative and with the great assistance of the Gentile reporter Mr. Mark
Maldis >from TV Poland. TV Poland has also produced a program dedicated to
events in Holobutow.

If I will be able to obtain address Mr. Uriel Zur-Shitzer, I would write to
him this information.
He visited my place in Vienna two years ago. but I have lost his address and
I have no idea if Uriel is alive and how I can contact him.

I hope that this information will meet with yours and Stryj menschen
approval and satisfaction.

In any event my book and erected stone are only two existing monuments
commemorating the memory of the murdered there Jews of Zydaczow, Stryj,
Morszyn, Bolechow, Skole and other small shtetls of Stryj vicinity. It is
estimated that between 14,000 to 17,000 Jews lost their lives in Holobutow.

Records from Ukraine #galicia

Is there an archive to which I can write for records >from Ukraine? I cannot
seem to locate on the Ukraine SIG web site any instructions for obtaining
records akin to those set forth for the respective countries under the
jurisdiction of Litvak SIG and Jewish Records Indexing - Poland. Is this
because Ukraine will not do searches for records? If it is in fact possible
to request a search for records there, does anyone know to what address I
should write, whether I can write in English, and how much money I need to
send? The particular records I am seeking pertain to four towns: Gertsa,
Stryy, Mukachevo, and Zolochev. Since my knowledge of Ukrainian geography is
poor, I am not even sure to what present-day oblasts (or is it gubernias?)
these towns belong. Any help anyone can provide on this latter issue would
also be much appreciated. I do know that at the time my ancestors lived
there, Gertsa (known then as Hertza) was in Romania; Zolochew (Zloczow) and
Stryy were in Galicia; and Mukachevo (Munkacs) was in Hungary. Should I
actually be writing to Romania, Austria, and Hungary, respectively, for these
records, or is Ukraine the right place?

Thank you very much,

place of residence #galicia

Robert Fraser <rgfraser@...>

On my grandfather's birth record >from Galicia (1886) , his parents, my
great-grand-father and his wife, are listed as being "from" a certain place.
The record, in Polish and German, requires the clerk to list "wohnort",
which means "place of residence".

I'm wondering if these places would be their birthplaces, or the places at
which they were
offically registered, or simply where they lived at the time - or neither.

WOHL #galicia

Marta Bertolini <marta.bertolini@...>

my name is Marta Bertolini and I live in Rome Italy.

Together with my father Bruno and my uncle Giorgio, we are trying to
discover something about our family, I mean about my grand-mother's family.
All I know is what my grand mother was able to tell us.

Here is our genealogy as far as we are aware about it, please let me know
if there is something in common with your one, it would be really nice to
find out we still have relatives somewhere in the world and to know
something more about our ancestors!

Thank you.

Marta

My great-great grand father was Markus "Max" WOHL
He was >from Polish origin and was born in Bolechov (Striy, Lwow, Galicia)
He had two brothers: Ignaz Menachem and another one (about this one we
don't have any information, someone told us he was an actor!)
Ignaz (1859 Bolechov-1913 Trieste, Italy) had a daughter: Iris (who lived
in Italy, married Mr. Pardo and had a son: Lucio Pardo, who lives in
Bologna, Italy and who is the chairman of the local Jewish Community)
The second brother had a daughter: Irene, who died in New York some years
ago, she was married to Mr. MOTULSKY

After his Bar-mitzvah Markus "Max" Wohl left Bolechov and went to Wien were
he married (1881?) Babette LANG (she was German, and died in 1891)
They had 4 daughters: Elsa, Hulda, Martha, Wally.
Babette died giving birth to the youngest.

Elsa was my great grandmother, she was born in 1883 in Langen in Arlberg in
Austria, she married my grat grand-father Giacomo Raffaele "Ralph" LUZZATTO
(she met him in Trieste, Italy were she went to visit uncle Ignaz). Elsa
and Ralph lived in Trieste and then in Rome and had two children, my
grand-mother Margherita "Rita" and uncle Bruno.

Hulda, she lived in Wien until she came to Italy to stay with Elsa and her
family when Austria was annexed to Germany

Martha had three husbands and lived in Wien and in London

Wally was the youngest, she married Moritz POLLAK, they had a son (Hans
Wolfgang), all I know abiut them is that they were living in France and
that they all died in Auschwitz, and that Moritz had a sister (Julka)

Talking about my great grand-father Ralph, he was the son of Leone
LUZZATTOI >from Trieste and of Adele BERGER who was English (but of Italian
origin)
Ralph had 3 sisters. Estella (Stella), Berta and Nina.
The only one who married was Nina, and they all lived in Italy, first in
Trieste and then in Rome.
