Re: Towns with no records at AGAD #general

My point was to give some encouragement to those who won't even
bother to look because they know that there are no records for their
particular town.

Israel Pickholtz

To search for index entries for the area of Galicia covered by the AGAD
project, set "Province" to "Ukraine." To broaden a search to cover all of
Galicia, set "Gubernia" to "Galicia." Using any of these search strategies
will still identify entries for your surname with the town reference of
Podkamen, but only in the Geography you have set.

ISO "correct" Mikolajow"/ShtetlSeeker confusion #galicia

Allenatdoj@...

To: GESHER GALICIA SIG readers

My path:
--Grandpa said: I am >from (is sounds like) "Me-kol-i-yoff" in "Poland under
control of Austria"
--His 1908 Ellis Island passenger manifest says: Moritz Hausmann >from
Mikolajow, Galicia, Austria
--I read "Where Once We Walked" as identifying then "Mikolajow" as
currently Nikolayev, Ukraine (and so registered in the FamilyFinder) near
the port city of Odessa. Now I don't think that is right. Read on...
--Appendix G in "Finding Your Jewish roots In Galicia" identifies 3
different towns in Galicia in 1877 for "Mikolajow" one east of Lvov,
another south of Lvov and another northwest of Brody, none being
Nikolayev near Odessa.
-- Searching for Mikolajow in ShtetleSeeker yielded 17 listing, with many
having the same latitude/longitude coordinates, such as 49-31, 23-59 and
50-21, 24-59.
--Asking ShtetlSeeker for towns near the first set of coordinates
identified as Mikolajow yielded 5 different names for the same location
(that is zero miles >from the Mikolajow coordinates).
FINAL TANTALIZING TIDBIT, Grandpa said his father was Aaron, and he owned
a bakery. The 1891 Business Directory for Galicia has a listing for
Mikolajow of a Leib Hausmann who was a baker.

I welcome any thoughts to share on WHICH is the CORRECT Mikolajow or
how to find out. I note that the ShtetlSeeker data base lacks guidance on
how to use it effectively. For example what do the names in ( ) under
Mikolajow mean?
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been confused.

I'm probably not going to be much help here, except to say that Marian
Smith's article was/is excellent. She worked long and hard on trying to
decipher the annotations, and may still be doing so. I suggest trying to
contact her -- I should be able to tell you how to do that but I can't -- but
probably thru the INS website.

When I attempted to translate the below message, received this morning, with
an online Polish-English electronic translator (www.poltran.com), it gave me
the following:

You honorable, kind transfers shawls (scales) >from mr. krzysztof, at the
same time it apologizes ktory, has failures of computers >from (with) and
from house not moze sie odezwac.
I'm guessing it's a thank you note for some information I had previously
sent to Krzysztof Nadowski, Gdynia, Poland, in which his friend explains
that he's writing for Krzysztof because Krzysztof has had a computer failure
at his house and thus is unable to send me a message himself. Can someone
who can read Polish please confirm this, though? I'm not always good at
guessing!

(I promise to buy a Polish-English dictionary as soon as I can figure out
which one to get!)

Mike Kalt <mkalt@...>

Thank you to the several people who provided (or volunteered to provide)
summary translations of the e-mail I received >from Dr. Zielinski. The
message described a ceremony placing a monument at Hobotlow, just outside
Stryy, where several thousand Jews were murdered. He was also trying to
contact Uriel Zur-Schutzer, head of the Stryj Landsmanschaften in Israel to
give him the news, but did not have his address.

As it turns out I traveled to Stryj last year with a ShtetlSchleppers group,
and we visited Hobotlow. At that time we remarked that a monument of some
type was really needed to memorialize the thousands of people who died
there--but we had no idea that Dr. Zielinski was actually in the process of
having one erected, so this was good news for me and all people connected
with Stryy. And in another piece of good news, I happened to have an
address for Uriel Zur-Schutzer, so Dr. Zielinski will be able to contact
him.

Thanks again to everyone who made this exchange possible!
