Re: Danzigers in Mauritius #danzig #gdansk #germany #poland

Logan J. Kleinwaks

There have now been two posts regarding Danzigers detained in Mauritius.
If anyone who is able to visit Jerusalem would like to investigate this
topic further, please contact me. The Central Zionist Archives (CZA)
there possesses several files related to the Mauritius detainment camps,
which might include information about detainees >from Danzig. CZA staff
is unable to research these files for us, but a volunteer could examine
them and report on their content (which might be suitable for a database).

In his message about his relatives detained in Mauritius, Arno Nachmann
wrote: "As far as I know you can find quite a few books written by other
deportees to Mauritius." If anyone is aware of books that name Danzigers
who were in Mauritius, please let us know.

Best regards,

Re: Info Korsovka Karsava #latvia

Mike Getz <mikegetz005@...>

Karsava (Korsovka) is in Latgale. It is about 40km north of Ludza.
A group of us visited there in 1997 with help >from the community
of Rezekne. There is a Soviet era memorial to Holocaust victims
at the Jewish cemetery.

Our guide was a local woman who recalled the Jews of Korsovka and
mentioned a remarkable escape of two survivors.

Hilda's mother was born there, which motivated our visit.
Please feel free to contact me directly.

Success in Romanian Archives #romania

Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>

Dear ROM-SIG Members,

I suspect that many of us were delighted at Renate Bielefeld's
successful report on her requests for her family documents >from the
Archives in Transylvania.

But, we all need to be aware that there are huge differences between the
archives in what was once a part of the Germanic Austro-Hungarian
Empire, and the areas in the east of Romania, including Bucharest, which
were part of the Ottoman Empire. As reported by our experts in Romania,

"Maramures is a part of Transylvania where the people are much different than the
people in Muntenia (where Bucharest is located) and Moldavia. The influence of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire left the print on Maramures, the same as the Ottoman Empire
left the print on Muntenia and Moldovia".

So we must all consider the difference in responses >from the areas in which we seek
them.

Just a reality check for us all.

Do you have a Napoleon 1812 story? #poland

Do you have a Napoleon 1812 story?

Roots-Key, the journal of JGSLA is collecting information about the
Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. We hope to be able to plot the
route >from Kovno to Moscow with your stories. Napoleon's army covered
a broad front stretched north and south through Kovno, Vilna, Svensionys,
Vitebsk, Mogilev and Minsk, bordered by the Pripet Marshes on the south,
crossing the Nieman, the Dneiper, and the Berezino Rivers. . .with major
battles in Smolensk, Borisov and Borodino. Every village and villager
was affected. Construction, demolition, pillage, disease and death
threatened every shtetl and town in his path.

If you have a story, no matter how insignificant or obscure it sounds,
we would like to hear it. If you would like to participate in this JGSLA
project, please contact us privately.

Help with Translating Russian record from Ciechanow #poland

gerischlen@...

In researching the LDS records, I came across this entry.
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/index.asp

It is record VM7662. It is a church record for Peplowska.
That was my grandmother's maiden name. Records in Poland during that
time period (late 1800's) were written in Russian so I need assistance
in translating the bottom half about Sofia (?) Peplowska.

Thank you for any help.

Researching: PEPLOWSKA/SKI, Ciechanow; JARON, Garvolin; SCHLENOFF,

Seirejai #poland

Diane Jacobs <thegenie@...>

Just to let you know the JRI-Poland database has
Birth, marriage and death records indexed for Seirejai.

Should you find any connection of your family to Mordesowitz

My ggm's 1866 birth registration >from JRI Poland lists the place of
registration as Sereje in Suwalki gubernia/Bialystock Province located at
54 14 23 49. The town looks like Stroczma or Streczma according to the
translation I was provided.

The only shetl name that looks even similar is Straciumai. Can anyone
help me out here?

LITHUANIAN ARCHIVES - VILKAVISKIS #lithuania

In response to the question about obtaining information about my family
name I have to say that Galina Baranova, the head archivist at the state
archives listed below responded to my request for information.
She had done a search for someone else with my surname and had only found
listings of names apparently >from a listing of street addresses. It did
not go back and I was looking for information >from the 1800s.

Contact information:

Galina wrote that they were currently working with requests >from January
2005 so it is a slow process.

Lithuanian State Historical Archives
(Lietuvos Valstybes Istorijos Archyvas)
Gerosios Vilties 10
2009 Vilnius, Lithuania
The initial payment for the search is 400 Litas. 2.1 Litas = 1 USD OR
3.45 LITAS = 1 EU which in the converted form can be sent by check
directly to the archive.

Or transfer the money for the name of Lithuanian State Historical
Archives to the account #LT 617 3000 10035324224 in the Lithuanian
Savings Bank (HANSA-LTB), Vilnius SWIFT:HABA LT 22. This is taken
directly >from a letter I received >from the archives on March 7, 2006.
After the search you can order copies or archival certificates. They
will notify you of the charges.
