Admor of Zlichov #general

Simon Barak

In a manuscript draft for his memories, an uncle of my wife writes that
he is a fourth generation descendant of the Admor of Zlichov. The
problems I have with this data are the following:
1. I cannot find any data on the Admor of Zlichov (who must have been
rather known, otherwise he would be called by his name and not by his
title).
2. Since the family has been known to reside in Prasznysz, Poland for at
least three generations, it makes sense that Zlichov is not Zliechov in
Slovakia or Zlechov in the Czech Republic but rather Zelichow (near
Tarnow) in Poland or Zelichowoknow (in West Poland=East Prussia). But
which one?

Thank you in advance for any clue!

I just got curious because of a TV show I caught last night about the
prefix ROTH--, as in

ROTHSTEIN, ROTHMAN, ROTHSCHILD.

Does anyone know what ROTH means?

Wilkoma #ukraine

Antoinette Hart <antoinette@...>

Dear Genners
Having researched the EIDB, once again, I have come up with a possible
ancestor who came to the US >from Wilkoma. To my knowledge, all my forebears
had come >from Ekaterinoslaw.
I believe that there has been some correspondence about Wilkoma but I have
deleted it as of being of no relevance to my quest. I would, therefore, be
very grateful for any information.
Thank you, in advance.

Female name - Nutta? #galicia

Richard Cooper <ric@...>

My grandmother's sister, though known to her own family as Anita, was always
referred to as 'Nita' by my grandmother.
That would have been spelt 'nun-yod-tess (or tof)-aleph (or ayin). I don't
know her Hebrew name.
She was born in Berdichev, but her mother came >from Tarnopol. (Maiden name
LEWINSTEIN).
The father was a Levite.

Krakow Marriage and Banns Project #galicia

Judy Wolkovitch <judywolk@...>

It was terrific to read Peter Jassem's enthusiastic response to his receipt
of the Krakow MARRIAGE records that he ordered >from THE JEWISH
HISTORICAL INSTITUTE.

In reviewing his e-mail I realised that the later Fonds (998-1010) contain
more information
than the earlier ones (Fonds 991-997). In fact, the later fonds are
MARRIAGES and
the earlier ones are BANNS.

To help you DECIDE whether to order COPIES OF records
we have ADDED tables DESCRIBING the Fond numbers and their columns TO
the JRI-PL website (>from THE JRI-POLAND HOME PAGE, go to the Jewish
Historical Institute, Warsaw and then to the Krakow Project which is No. 1.)

Happy hunting!!

January 1, 2002 will mark the end of an era for JewishGen... #galicia

Susan E. King <susan.king@...>

With heartfelt gratitude for his many years of friendship and support,
it is with regret and sadness that JewishGen announces the resignation
of one of our long standing Board members. Bernie Kouchel will be
retiring >from the Board of Directors of JewishGen effective January 1,
2002.

For those of us who have had the pleasure to work with him, have had his
friendship and loyal support, have seen his spirit and energy throughout
the formative years of JewishGen, we will miss him dearly.

We hope you will join in honoring Bernie for all his achievements on
JewishGen's Wall of Honor for December,
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/Honors.ihtml, for his 11
years of loyal and dedicated service to JewishGen, for his insights, his
vision, his leadership, his spirit and his creativity that has been a
hallmark for JewishGen today and will remain for future generations.

We wish him well in his retirement, we wish him health, peace and
happiness.

On this day, December 1, 2001, JewishGen has issued a formal
Proclamation,
http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgen/pr/KouchelProclamation.html, to
impart and share in his wonderful sense of humor. But more importantly,
we want to forever honor Bernie for his long term commitment and his

Having researched many books on the pogroms in the Ukraine, I have yet to
find information on the shtetl Ratno. >snip< I would
like to share information on one published in 1999: that I found very
informative. "A Prayer for the Government: Ukrainian and Jews in
Revolutionary Times 1917-1920" by Henry Abramson, Harvard Un. Press.
Unlike
the earlier books, this has an index and a very extensive bibliography.
With the passage of some 80 years, the book gives a much broader
interpretation of the events following the WWI. Again, I was able to get
the book on an interlibrary loan.
