Need Gravestone photo in Colchester, CT please #general

Dayna <zoeys_mom@...>

I've been trying to figure out the connection between 2 MINTZ families
in Colchester, CT for some time now. I recently connected with another
MINTZ researcher (through a photo I'd posted on Flickr) and we're hoping
to prove our theory of brotherly connection between her relative and mine
with a father's name which is hopefully written on the gravestone.

Please contact me off list if you can take a photo at Ahavas Achim
Cemetery in Colchester, CT. (on Taintor Hill Road, Colchester CT 06415,
Directions: Route 84 East to Route 2 to Exit 18; left onto Middletown
Road; left onto Cabin Road; right onto Taintor Hall Road; cemetery will
be on the left.) I do have the exact location of the graves.

Thank you!

Re: reverse JRI-PL indexes of LDS films? #poland

Nicole Heymans <nheymans@...>

If you select data type = "any field" and enter the film number the
results window will give you the number of records (assuming the film
number was entered in the db). However clicking on the "List n
records >from ....." button produces an error message "you cannot
search for microfilm numbers". But at least this procedure should
inform you whether the film of interest to you has been indexed or
not. (And if not, you might consider offering to index it....)

Nicole Heymans, Brussels, Belgium

MODERATOR'S NOTE: The best way to find out whether particular LDS
films have been indexed is to check the "Your Town" pages, which
include the status of indexing for LDS films as well as records
in the Polish State Archive.

1845 revision list comments #lithuania

paulkozo@...

Does anyone know what the following comments in 1845 revision
lists might mean?

(i) lives "kutom"; and

(ii) leases land (keeps "grunt").

Can anyone please explain the distinction between being a "tavern keeper"
and "renting a tavern"?

Re: 1911 uk census #lithuania

M. Lewis Luz <mervyn1@...>

like many of you i spent many frustrating months and no little credits
hunting through the 1911 UK census (www.1911census.co.uk) for relatives
who made it >from Lithuania to UK early in the century - two things became
apparent only gradually and my difficulties may help those just setting
out to use this census:

unlike the 1901 and earlier census many non-naturalised Jews put under
nationality "Hebrew" rather than Russian, German etc and we all know how
the enumerators of the 1901 census often entered German for any Yiddish
speaking family wherever they came from.

Advice then is enter 'Hebrew' as a keyword if all else fails.
second point is be prepared for terrible mistakes in the searchable
transcription - only after months of used credits did i find my grgr
grandfather because the transcription entered him as 99 instead of 66 as
clearly entered in the photo of the census itself - any search for less
than 99 led nowhere till i found him by chance - another relative was
entered under the family name of his adopted daughter although his
surname was clearly in the picture of the record itself!

www.1911census.co.uk are happy to correct this when you point these mistakes
though this does not help at the time of the search. Advice then is search
under every possible contingency if the obvious does not pop up at the
beginning. Happy hunting.

Daniel Gleek

Dear Genners,
I am looking for the descendants of Anne and Morry MARKOVITCH.
Both were born in about 1890 and emigrated to Chicago >from London.
Their children included Marilyn and Howard and would now be about 90.
Also another son may have been married to a 'Miss Godfrey'.
MARKOVITCH may have been spelt differently and may have been Anglicised to
Marks or Marco.
Please respond privately to daniel@...
Thank you, in advance.

BARTRA from Peru #general

Alan Steinfeld

Hi,
I'm researching the surname BARTRA which may be associated with a Jewish
family in Iquitos, Peru. Does anyone know the origin of this name? It
has been suggested that it may be of Morrocan origin and perhaps a
shortened form of Bar-Torah.

Thanks,
