Routes to England and Marriage authorisations for new settlers #unitedkingdom

Hi

Firstly than you to everyone who has responded to my first posting -I now
have 2 more questions so a quick recap - I had just heard that my great
grandparents had met on ship whilst coming >from different 'countries' 1 from
Courland and the other >from somewhere in the 'Russian Poland'
The got married in London in 1893 and I have a copy of their marriage
authorisation >from the London Beth Din and it is this document that gives
their country of birth but no town is given. I have the 1901 census that has
them as German - a mistake of the enumerator as they couldn't write and
spoke Yiddish and on the 1911 census they have just entered Russia.

1. How likely is it that a young woman would have travelled to England by
herself? I have no knowledge or trace of her father being in England and I
haven't been able to find her mother's name. I don't even know whether she
had brothers and sisters.

2. Was there a time period that they had to have been in England before the
Beth Din would issue the licence?

This is my first posting, so I hope I've done it correctly.
I, too, would like to know how to research Hamburg passenger lists - in my case
between 1890 and 1910. There may be others who need that information, too. So do
you think it would be a good idea for anyone with an answer to Chris Gould's
query to post it for the whole SIG.? If not, how do I access any replies?

Thanks for your help.

FREE AUSSIE RECORDS FOR A WEEK #unitedkingdom

yarrawa@...

Dear Genners,

I learn >from Dick Eastman's Newsletter (free) that a well-known
subscription website beginning with A is offering free access to
Australian convict records for a week till Jan 30th. I checked; there
are 220 COHEN names on the list & 103 LEVY names.
Do remember to check the tiny box for exact matches or you will be
overloaded with useless results.
This is of interest to our List because the convicts came form the U.K,

Re: Antwerp Police Immigration Index #poland

Hello,

You should also consider that:

The state archives >from Belgium (or Archives Generales du Royaume et
Archives de l'Etat dans les Provinces of Belgium), do have files that
were kept open as long as the alien stayed in Belgium, in whichever
city he or she stayed in. When the person naturalized, the file was
closed.

In Antwerp, when a person left the city, the file was closed till they
eventually came back, when it was reopened.

The archives J. Schwartz is talking about, are the city archives from
Antwerp. There are some municipalities, which are today part of
Antwerp but were not before. The most interesting municpalities which
had many Jews living in, are Bercehm and Borgerhout (apart from
Antwerp itself).

Therefore you will have to look in a different archive when you want
to look for someone who lived in one of these municipalities. (These
municipalities are not really seperated >from Antwerp, so whenever
someone moved, s/he could move to Berchem or Borgerhout as easy as
they would move to another street within Antwerp.

All these archives are nowadays in the main archive >from Antwerp but
should be searched speratley as these files are kept in different
series.

Also keep in mind that the index which was published by familysearch
only entails the files >from 1840 to 1930.
Many East-European that fled, left after the 30's (my grandfather left
Germany in 1933 together with many others).

All alien files in Antwerp (which are already open to the public) are
scanned and thus easier to look at it (or copy to your USB).

The files in Brussels are not scanned and you will thus have to
photograph each one of the files if you want to take copies with you.
The daily maximum is 25. The files which you can take a look at in
Brussels, are all originals and sometimes photographs are attached.
This means that you'll get a Gray colored copy, whereas in Antwerp the
photographs are between black and gray and not always of a good
quality.

To request copies by mail, could become very expensive in Brussels, in
Antwerp you can ask someone to copy the files. Because it takes much
less of a hassle to get copies, it will be easier to find a volunteer.

Can't identify Polish town name #poland

NormK12065

Hi all,

I just received naturalization papers for cousin who states she was
born in Kolnszek, Poland. I have been unable to find this town in town
finder or the Mormon film list. Neither "Where Once We Walked" or
"Jewish Roots in Poland" list the town name.Could it be a Yiddish
name for Kolno or Kolo?

Thanks for any insight.

I am sorry to let all who knew Mel Oshins that he passed away on
January 19th. Mel was a long time contributor to JewishGen. He was
the most interesting, fascinating man, who shared his knowledge easily
and was always ready to help someone else. I am one of his many
friends and he will be missed by all those he made throughout his
life. Condolences may be sent to his daughter at oshins@aol.com.

HR Univ.Prof.Dr.Maria Teschler-Nicola of the Natural History Museum
Vienna was working on a paper on the crazy Nazi bone experiments
conducting on the old Waehringer Friedhof families (including my
Biedermann ancestors). The Nazis were trying to prove that Jews were
degenerating over time. I do not know if Teschler-Nicola's work was
ever published. You can read about some of the history at

Speaking of Vienna cemeteries, what is the status of the cleanup efforts
that should have started after the announcement of an accord between the
