JGSLA - Assisted Research Day - Sunday, April 1st - 1940 Census, Translating Russian Records, Headstones & Translations #general

Pamela Weisberger

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles invites you to join us
at our next program:

Sunday, April 1 ~ 1:00PM -- 6:00PM

Assisted Research Day at the Los Angeles Family History Library
10741 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, 90025

Come for an afternoon of mentor-guided research using the microfilms
and records at the LAFHL with free access to Ancestry.com, FindMyPast
(UK records) & Fold3.com. Have your documents in Yiddish, Hebrew,
Polish, German and Russian translated for free! (Advanced requests
required by March 28th.) The 1940 US census will be on the Internet
the day after our meeting, but there will not be a name-searchable
index available for many months. Steve Morse's talk will help guide
you in the search techniques to locate your family quickly in the
digitized images going online.

We are offering the following classes:

* 1:15PM -- Navigating the 1940 U.S. Census -- Stephen P. Morse
* 2:45PM -- Interpreting 19th Century Russian Documents -- Jane Neff Rollins
* 4:00PM -- Navigating the 1940 U.S. Census -- Stephen P. Morse
(repeat of 1:00PM talk)
* 5:15PM -- It's Carved in Stone: Deciphering Jewish Headstones --
Madeleine Isenberg

This program is only open to current JGSLA members, but you can join
or renew at the door. For more details on these presentations,
speakers, translation requests and directions to the LAFHL go here:

is the one to begin to, especially if you need one-on-one guidance to
help you get started (or continue) with your research. We look forward
to seeing you next weekend.

Naidia Woolf <rnwoolf@...>

A relative of mine will be visiting Lodz in May. Can anyone suggest
a tour guide? When I visited Poland in 2007 - on what was then known
as an 8-day shtetl schlepper tour that began in Warsaw, I had the
services of a tour guide and driver who escorted me not only to places
of particular interest around Warsaw but also to several of my ancestral
towns such as Lodz and Kalisz (and out to the Treblinka - location of
the former death camp where some of my maternal ancestors were murdered
and are memorialized with a commemorative stone).

As far as I know my relative will only be needing a tour guide while
visiting Lodz.

Records leaving USA #poland

Henryk Gruder <henrygruder@...>

This is a general question: Ellis Island records tell us about ARRIVAL to
USA. My grandfather returned >from USA to his native Ukraine later. Is
anybody aware of any records of LEAVING USA?

My grandfather Hersh Litwak was born in Talnoye (now Ukraine - Cherkaskaia
Oblast) in 1874. He attempted to emigrate to USA in June 1895, along with
two other persons of the name Litwak (David and Chaie). Then he returned.
Where? I do not know. I know only that in 1907 he lived in Tarnopol, where
my Mother was born and later, until Holocaust in Lvov.

GORDON Family from Svencionys and Elizavetgrad #lithuania

Linda Shefler

I just received this record >from the Kirovograd archives. My GORDON family
was originally >from Svencionys in Vilna district and at some point in the
mid-1800s they moved to Elizavetgrad. Of all the records for GORDONs from
Svencionys that were found in the Elizavetgrad-Kirovograd archives, this is
the only mystery record.

According to Dr. Alexander Beider's 'Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names',
Elka (Elke) is a derivation of the name Elye >from Elijah (Elias). Elias is
the name of my 2nd great grandfather and Yakov is a name found throughout
this family. So there is a good chance that this is part of my GORDON
family, but I have no idea if this Elka is my 2nd great grandfather, and if
so, who this Yakov is.

The confusion stems >from the fact that Elia had a son Bentsel Yankel (born
1870) who went by the name of Jacob in the US. This Yakov (>from the record
below) was probably born about 1851, so there is a chance that they were
brothers, but I have no knowledge of him and no additional information on
him.

Are the people in this record familiar to anyone?

*February 11, 1869 - Yakov GORDON, son of Elka GORDON >from Svencionys,
married Reysia, daughter of Leyba AVRAMOVICH*

If these names are familiar to anyone, please respond privately.

Many thanks,

Linda Silverman Shefler
