Dear Fellow Genners!
Sincere thanks to Brenda H. who lives in Israel. She found the family
of Leah Giler, the person who is listed in the Ostrog Yizkor Book!
Coincidentally my husband and his brother are flying to Israel today to
attend a family wedding. They will be speaking to their newly found
relatives! Unbelievably my father in law and Leah Giler did not know
that they both survived the Holocaust! They have both passed away. My
father in law never spoke to his children about his war experience. We
are hoping that these new relatives will be able to tell us more about
the BRONSHTEIN family of Ostrog.

Pinkas of Zolkiew (in Hebrew Zayin-Alef-Lamed-Kuf-Vav-Vav-Alef) #galicia

Dear Genners,

Does anybody know if the original Pinkas (Community decision book) of the
Jewish community of Zolkiew (previously Poland, now in the Ukraine) exist?
And if yes, where is the original? I am not talking about R' Shlomo Buber's
transcription in "Kirya Nisgava".

Any info will be greatly acknowledged.

German transcriptions and translations #galicia

Carol Sicherman <csicher@...>

I have posted the following requests for German transcription and
translation on ViewMate:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=23710
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=23711
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=23728

One response is already posted to each of them, but a few elements remain
puzzling, both in the German and in the interspersed Hebrew phrases.
This is nearly the end of a considerable number of challenging postcards in
German, and the expertise of those who have accepted the challenge has
been so impressive.

Please reply using the form on the website.

Many thanks,
Carol Sicherman

Re: San Francisco: 19th Century Vital Records #general

You can check the Library of Congress' list of known San Francisco
newspapers and look for availability via inter library loan:

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/titles/places/california/san_francisco/san_francisco/

(there are several pages of just San Francisco newspapers)

There are issues of a few San Fransisco newspapers searchable online at
their Chronicling America website with the earliest for San Francisco
(The Call) starting in April 1, 1890. You might search for an obituary
or other information that could possibly have some helpful birth
information:

I am looking for the birth certificate of someone who was born in 1862 in San
Francisco. I understand that most of the city's vital records were destroyed in
the 1906 earthquake. Can anyone suggest alternative sources, such as newspapers
of the 1860s, and indicate where research-copies of these materials might be
found in San Francisco?

I am requesting assistance with translation of 4 Hebrew inscriptions

just the name of the deceased, and hopefully the father as well. Here

Gesher Galicia launches The Map Room! Dobromil Map Question #poland

s_wiener@...

The map room is fantastic. Kudos to all!

I have a question about the Dobromil Town Cadastral Map 1852
http://www.ckcckc.org/m/f/gg/maproom/towns/d01/dobromil1.html

In the middle of the map just below the word Dobromil, it seems to say:
'Sendung des Heil Geistes' which Google translates as
'Broadcast of the Healing Arts'.
OK - excusing Google's shortcomings at least it's a start.
It is a large area - bigger than a hospital even if it were to
have additional buildings like one for lepers or one for pleurisy.
Can someone please shed some light on this obviously important demarcation?

Thanks,
Shellie Wiener

Re: orphanage near Altenkundtadt #germany

Dr. Ekkehard Huebschmann <info@...>

Dear Diana,

The website alemannia-judaica.de cites the article from
"The Encyclopedia of Jewish life Before and During the Holocaust" (First
published in 2001 by New York University Press; Copyright 2001 by
Yad Vashem Jerusalem, Israel) as follows:

"Altenkunstadt, Upper Franconia - Jews were present >from the 15th
century. Their houses were destroyed during the peasant riots of 1699.
A synagogue was built in 1726 (replaced in 1822) and a Jewish public
school was opened in 1869. The Jewish population declined sharply from
400 in 1837 to 112 (total 1.288) in 1880 and subsequently to 28 in
1933. The interior of the synagogue was destroyed on Kristallnacht
(9-10 November 1938). In 1937-39, 12 Jews left the town, nine to other
German cities and three to the United States. Thirteen were expelled
to Izbica in the Lublin district of Poland on 25 April 1942."

It should be added: one male Jew and his daughter survived in
Altenkunstadt. The building of the former synagogue was entirely
restored in the years 1989 to 1993 and is used as a museum and
cultural centre for encounter.

The nearest Jewish orphanage was the one in Fuerth (Furth with
umlaut), of which the files are stored at the Central Archives for the
History of the Jewish People, Jerusalem, DFu2.

The finding aid published in form of a PDF file at:
http://cahjp.huji.ac.il/webfm_send/469
contains a list of personal files of the alumni or children.
The fact that your GGfather Bernhard HAHN is not listed doesn't mean,
he wasn't orphaned there, but that there is no file for him.

You mentioned the maiden name of your GGmother HELLMANN. You can take it
as an example: there is a file of Karl HELLMANN >from Altenkunstadt >from 1908.

I hope this information will help. In general I thought it should
be mentioned for all who are interested in Altenkunstadt or in
Franconian Jews or in Jewish orphanages.
