New Website about Hungarian Jewish Past #hungary

cia@...

A huge thank you to Karesz Vandor for bringing this wonderful website to the attention of h-siggers. I was able to locate photos of the synagogues in several towns where my family once lived. As well, I was able to find photos of the synagogue in a different town for a 94 year old lady who survived the Shoah (her sisters did not). She was very moved by the sight of what was lost.

For any one interested in current developments regarding the new Holocaust museum in Budapest, check out Hungarian Spectrum March 6 posting.

Let me draw your attention to a new website: http://zsidomult.hu/ (zsido
mult or Jewish past in Hungarian).
The site is expanding continuously and the editors will be grateful for any
updates, stories, memoirs and pictures. They are trying to set up a
web-based encyclopedia of Hungarian Jewry.
The website is edited by staff of the Tiszafured-based Menora foundation and
the Rabbinical seminary.

Re: BMD Records in Breslau ( Wroclaw ) #germany

Moderator Note: I urge GerSIG members to use the free "Tiny URL" web tool
to create shorter versions of long Internet addresses (URLs). If any of
the links provided below do not work for you, please contact Mr. Falk for
help. ================>

An excellent source for information about Breslau Jewish families is
the indexed data prepared by Jewish Records Indexing - Poland
(JRI-Poland) covering births, marriages and deaths of Jewish residents
in Breslau during the period >from 1889 to 1910. The Breslau
Standesamt records (scans of the actual records) which were indexed by
JRI-Poland are now available online on the website of the Wroclaw
archive.

A portion of the indexed data is available for searching on the
JRI-Poland website ( http://jri-poland.org/jriplweb.htm ). The full
data set will be available online when the project is fully funded. I
would encourage all Breslau researchers to contact me to learn more
about this project.

The index created by JRI-Poland is an invaluable resource for finding
the scanned documents on the Wroclaw archive site at:
http://www.archeion.net/atom/tools/index.php?nrap=82&ilosc_wynikow=100&sort=sygnatura&fun=0&txt_tytul=&txt_data_start=1895&txt_data_stop=1895&nr_zespol=1425zespoly%3Don&nr_kolekcja=&nr_seria=2&nr_podseria=&nr_jednostka=&nr_dokument=&txt_osob=&txt_rzecz=&txt_geo=&kolekcje=on&podzespoly=on&serie=on&podserie=on&jednostki=on&dokumenty=on&oper=szukaj&strona=1&formularz=zlozony
With the "Datacja" (Date Range) and "Sygnatura" (File Information)
("nr zespolu" and "nr. serii") >from the JRI-Poland index, one can
quickly find the collection of records which will include the one of
interest.

Joachim Mugdan has posted excellent instructions in the GerSIG Forum
on how to use the Wroclaw archive search engine. [Use the SIG Archives
search tool to locate these instructions. A direct link to the SIG Archives
at JewishGen is included at the end of every GerSIG list message. Moderator]

Entirely separately, there are excellent collections of Breslau Jewish
community materials in the archive of the Jewish Historical Institute
(JHI) in Warsaw and the archive of the Centrum Judaicum (CJA) in
Berlin. The JHI materials on Breslau have been scanned and put
online. The website is not too user-friendly, but it is there at:
http://cbj.jhi.pl/?q=&sort=score&sort_dir=desc&categories_filter=563877

If you have not run across them already, these catalogues are useful
places to look for archival files (in Poland and Germany) regarding
former German Jewish communities which are now in Poland (Silesia,
Posen, Pomerania, East and West Prussia) and in Germany today:

Publication: München ; New Providence : K. G. Saur, 1996-
Format/Description: Book v. ; 25 cm.
Contents: Bd.6.Stiftung "Neue Synagoge Berlin-Centrum Judaicum. 2 v.

The indices of these books are very good -- by surname and by place.
A good university library will likely have them. I always get them
through inter-library loan. (Selections are available on Google
Books.)

"Quellen zur Geschichte der Juden in polnischen Archiven" includes the
Breslau files in the JHI in Warsaw which are now online.

For the materials at the CJA in Berlin, there is no real option but to
visit the archive or to hire a researcher to do so for you.

I would be happy to correspond with Ernie and all others about these resources.

Best regards, Stephen Falk, Point Roberts, WA, sfalkjd@...

Re: BMD Records in Breslau [ Wroclaw ] #germany

Roger Lustig

Dear Ernie:
That's a big question! What time periods are you interested in?

There's a good deal of info about Staedtel and Namslau County for
1810-1874, all of it (that I know about) on LDS films. I've transcribed
some of it. Post-1874 records for Namslau are in the Opole archive but
not yet on line; the first 10 years of those are also filmed.

For Breslau, there's a ton of stuff. Some is on LDS films too, but many
of those are difficult to work with if not downright illegible. The
remains of the Breslau synagogue archive are on line but monstrously
difficult to use, at the Jewish Historical Institute, Warsaw. Post-1874
civil vital records are spotty, i.e., many volumes are lost. The first
15 years (1874-88) are filmed; the next 20+ years are on line and much
of that has been indexed by JRI-Poland.

For references to other historical material, R. Bernhard Brilling's book
on the Jewish communities of Middle Silesia has an excellent chapter on
Staedtel and plenty on Breslau too.

KLUCKOVSKI - Gorzkowice, Poland or Vienna, Austria to South Africa #southafrica

Jules Feldman

According to her deportation record >from Vienna on 5 October 1942, Rachel
KLUCKOVSKI was born in the village Gorzkowice near Piotrkow, Poland. Her
daughter Miriam PACHTMAN EKERT, born in Vienna in 1926, was in the last
Aliyat Noar group to arrive in Palestine >from Vienna in 1939. Miriam is no
longer alive but her daughter Nitza Ben-Shlomo tells that Rachel had a
sister, name unknown who migrated in the 1930s, either >from Vienna or from
Poland, to South Africa, with her husband and 2 daughters.
I know this is a long shot but we would like to find Miriam's sister and her
descendants.
If you know of any family who migrated to South Africa >from Gorzkowice or
Piotrkow or have any research suggestions we will be grateful.
Thanks,
Jules Feldman,
Kibbutz Yizreel, Israel
