Trying to find Naomi/Nechama Chidekel WEXLER of California #general

Josie Barnett <josieb@...>

For the past year and a half I have been trying to find my World War
II *mystery* survivor cousin >from Sharkovschina (Szarkowszczyzna)
who ended up in California and who may be named as above. A member of
the family lost touch with her about 25 years ago. According to my
understanding she is in her early to mid seventies. I have looked up
details in phone lists and can only find a Nancy WEXLER living in
California. Due to privacy laws etc., I can proceed no further. Maybe
someone on this list may know who she is. Please also bear in mind that
I live in Israel and there are limitations to my research resources.

My purpose for locating her is to help me with my family research and
establish a family contact.

For the groups information, I was formerly subscribed to Jewishgen
under a different email address.

Kharkov Medical Institute is actually a Medical School (or Medical
University).

It used to be common in Russia (and in the other ex Eastern Block
countries modelled on the Soviet institutions) to have universities
dedicated to certain selected professions or a discplines. Thus
medical, economical, technical (Polytechnics), agricultural, arts
and other learning institutions are separted >from the local
universities.

It appears that thing have changed nowadays, since visiting Kharkiv
(city's modern Ukrainian name) University English language website,
you would locate a medical school amongst the departments

http://www.univer.kharkov.ua/

It is known as: School of Fundamental Medicine and it hax six
departments. You should probably address medical school dean with
you question at: ffm@...

Upper Silesian Towns lost and found #general

Roger Lustig <trovato@...>

Dear friends:

Reviewing my late father's work on Jews of Upper Silesia, I came
upon a note that contained information I have now confirmed:

The LDS films 879,596 through 879,598, indexed under Baranowice
(Baranowitz), Katowice province, actually contain much more.
Specifically, they contain a wealth of information about:

Sohrau (Zory) for about 1812-1836 and 1847-1873
Loslau (Wodzislaw Slaski) 1826-1874
Rybnik for 1812-1874 (though more for the years before about 1850)
localities in Kreis Rybnik for 1812-1847

as well as

Nieder-Belk for 1843-1847
Baranowitz for 1845-1848
Nieder-Schwirklan for 1848 (one record--for the Bielschowsky family).

In fact, the Baranowitz material takes up only a few frames at the
beginning of the film.

The contents of the film are summarized accurately in a typed document
that appears at the beginning of the first of the three reels of film.

My father's notes indicate that a similar situation holds for film
864,953, which is listed as containing material about Neu-Berun (Bierun
Nowy); but I have not yet seen this film.

My question to all of you:

Have you found such uncatalogued material on other films, whether >from
the LDS Family History Library or elsewhere? If so, please describe it
for us.

Let me state unequivocally that:
--I consider the LDS/FHL efforts to be noble and highly valuable,
--they have to date provided vast amounts of information at minimal
cost to thousands and thousands of researchers,
--I consider the state of affairs described above to be merely an
oversight,
--I am circulating the information in this note, and making my request,
strictly in the interest of making a good thing better.

May all of us be inscribed in the Book of Life for the coming year,
and may all of us have success in discovering the inscriptions we seek
in other books!

ref: Dachau camp #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Dear Lili:

Kaufering Erpfting was one of Dachau's subcamps. Riederloh is
village nearby, housed inmate barracks. Kaufering is about 30
miles west of Munich/Dachau. Search for a map using JewishGen's
ShtetlFinder.

During the Nazi regime Dornier and Messerschmitt had factories
there, as well as the DAG dynamite plant was there, so maybe one
of these was the place where your father worked. See
< http://www.streport.com/files/holocaust/heuakt.jpg.html >.

Finally, if you wish to read an account about the Kaufering
Erpfting camps see

Good luck with your sad search
Tom

I just (after 60 years) found out my father died in Dachau but
worked in Riederloh. Can anyone enlighten me as to what and
where Riederloh was and anything else available on this camp.
I never heard of it before. Appreciate your help.

Is there a possibility that the 1901 London census which Ms.

the town name?

I ask because "Where We Once Walked" has an entry of Staszow (or
Stashev, Stashuv). It says its population was 4,704 and that it
is 101 kilometers northeast of Krakow. Chester G.Cohen's "Shtetl
Finder Gazetteer" also has an entry for Stashev, and says that
there is a Yizkor book for the town.

I don't recognize the initial combination "Sth". I dare suggest
that the census reporter might have mistranscribed a Yiddish
pronunciation of "Sht." Also, although I do understand that a
handwritten terminal "v" could resemble a handwritten terminal "r,"
I don't undertand what our ever helpful Sally means by "possibly
Sthasor, but it looks like a v, and I would guess v in Poland
anyway."

It is my understanding that a "w" in Polish is in Russian a "v,"
So I believe "Staszow" is the Polish version of the town's name,
while "Stashev" is the Russian or Ukrainian version. Possibly a
Yiddish speaker would pronounce the name as "Shtashow" or "Shtashov."

Naturalization of children #general

martin solomon <bassdoc@...>

I tried to get back to a link where someone had a relative who may
have arrived as a toddler and wanted to know about naturalization.
According to the NYS Archives Information Leaflet #6 after 1922 a
non-native minor child became a citizen when their parents were
naturalized. This source was also good to determine the New York
area district courts and dates of the records available.
www.sara.nysed.gov. The leaflet is a goldmine for basic information
on where to get naturalization records.
