Need help - German word on tombstone #general

Thomas F. Weiss

Dear JGenners,

I have posted on ViewMate (VM1783) at
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/source/vm1783.html
the contents of the German text on the tombstone of my great grandmother.
The tombstone is located in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof.

I have translated most of the contents, but there is a word or phrase on
line 8 that is partially obliterated. I have made a guess at the letters.
Can someone help me to figure out line 8?

Please send all replies to me at tfweiss@mit.edu

Many thanks,

Tom Weiss

Zelda is not a Hebrew name.
Laike and Zelda are not Hebrew either. Just because you are using *bat*,
doesn't mean that the whole name is Hebrew.

Re: MADNICK; Winnipeg and N. Dakota; 1908 #general

Tim Baker <tbaker@...>

Looking for information on the family of Isaac and Lizzie MADNICK,
previously known as MADNITZKY. Their naturalization papers say Issac was
born in Dvinsk, Latvia in 1879 and Lizzie was born in *Tulsa,* Romania in
1883.

Not sure when they left the old country, but they lived in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, were married there and apparently became British subjects before
entering the U.S. in October 1908. They lived in Grand Forks, ND for 4-5
years where their children were born: Harry in 1909, Rosie in 1910, and
Rachel in 1912. The family then lived in Bellingham, WA >from about
1913-1921 and then went to parts unknown, but eventually southern
California where Isaac died in 1953. Was it family that drew them to
Winnipeg and elsewhere, or something else?
