I've read at the TV-guide that there will be a special TV program on the

Galicia SIG Meeting at NYC Conference #galicia

Shelley K. Pollero <rpollero@...>

Are you planning to attend the Summer Seminar in New York August 8-13?

Members and non-members are invited to attend the annual SIG meeting
on Monday, August 9 beginning at 11:00 a.m. We hope to extend the
12:15 ending time, if possible, for meeting, greeting, and networking.

I have heard >from several of you that you'll be there, but not from
many. Drop me a line if you're planning to be there, and look for
me and other Galitzianers to say hello. Be sure to pick up our
Galicia SIG sticker for your nametag. Check the Registration Table,
the Handout Table, and elsewhere. Or, just ask me.

We would like to hear >from Gesher Galicia members who would like to
present a 3 minute (max) summary of their Galician research and/or new
initiatives.

Coordinators of existing and new or recently formed Galician Shtetl
Research Groups are planning to update the membership on their group's
research activities. Some are planning Birds-of-a-Feather meetings.
Check the Conference bulletin board daily, as new BOF meetings are set
up >from time to time.

Town Historians are invited to report any news about their Galician
town.

More Town Historians and JGS Liaisons desired!

A Town Historian serves as a clearinghouse for those researching a
specific town, provides guidance for new researchers, maintains a list
of researchers and family surnames for the towns, and provides updates
on your town.

A JGS Liaison represents Gesher Galicia at your local JGS, makes
announcements, brings SIG membership packets to JGS meetings, and
reports to the SIG any new Galician developments that you hear about
through your JGS.

I'm staying at the Marriott Marquis Conference Hotel. If you can't
find me among the teeming crowd, call and leave a message in my room.

So, who's going to the Conference???

A Research Hint #belarus

Adarelana@...

I have been searching for the Petition for Naturalization for my father, Yale BELINKOFF. I knew he was naturalized sometime after 1940 in Southern
California. The Federal Court in Los Angeles has an alphabetized microfilm
of a card index file supposedly listing everyone ever naturalized in Federal Court in Southern California. However, I was unable to find any record of my father even with several different spellings.

I then turned to the National Archives in Laguna Niguel and also requested my father's passport application. In due course both indicated they found no record for Yale BELINKOFF. I then learned that the National Archives used the same index file that was at the court, so that result was inevitable.

At a Pesach Seder soon after, I was relating the story and a friend asked if I had tried with the names reversed. Since I had not, I called NARA and
asked them to do one more search on Belinkoff YALE. Within a half hour NARA called me back to indicate they had indeed found the record under the
reversed names. I have since asked the Passport Agency to search again under the reversed name but have not yet heard >from them.

The moral of the story is never give up and have clever friends.

"Valinya Gabernya" #general

Marjorie Rosenfeld <marjorie.rosenfeld@...>

Sounds as of you're thinking of Volhynia Gubernia. Volhynia was a district
(gubernia) in the 19th- century Russian Pale of Settlement. The Pale was a
large area in Western Russia to which Jews were confined. (They couldn't
settle elsewhere in Russia without a special permit.) Volhynia abutted
Austrian Galicia, and there was apparently a close relationship between the
Jews of Volhynia and the Jews of the city of Brody, 5 miles over the border
in Galicia. For a good map of the Pale of Settlement, you might want to
look at:

Gitelman, Zvi. " Century of Ambivalence: The Jews of Russia
and the Soviet Union, 1881 to the Present", Schocken Bokks, Inc.,
New York, in
cooperation with YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, 1988.

Who knows Rachel ZACKARIASZ? #general

Imprimerie BNC <BNC.Imprimerie@...>

I am searching the family of Rachel Zackariasz who emigrated after the war
from Bialystock to Israel. She was the daughter of Esther ZAK (maiden name).
Rachel is the cousin of my mother, Sonia ZAK (maiden name).
I hope someone could help me to join this family. The last adress I get was in
Rishon le Zion in 1968.
Thank you.

GENESBLAT or CENESBLAT (Warsaw >> USA/France) #general

Yale J. Reisner <reisner@...>

The son and daughter of Josek & Frajda GENESBLAT or CENESBLAT family of
Warsaw are sought by the Szczerbakiewicz brothers, sons of the Polish
Catholics who sheltered the Genesblats during the Holocaust. The
Genesblats were sheltered by the Szczerbakiewiczes first in their
Genesblats' own country home in Swider (near Warsaw) and later in the home
of a fisherman near Karczew.

It is believed that the son might be in New York and the daughter in Paris,
but this information is unconfirmed.

Anyone having information on this family is asked to contact the
undersigned privately. Many thanks.

BENJAMIN, TUMIM #general

Darren&Susan <darren.balogh@...>

Hello everyone,
I am searching for information on my father's uncle Bene BENJAMIN. I have
been told that he changed his last name >from TUMIM. I sent for his obituary
from a 1959 Tacoma, Washington newspaper, and it stated that he was born in
Poland abt. 1867( I was told that his family was >from Vilna), came to the
U.S. in 1888, and settled in Tacoma in 1897. It also listed the names of
his sons: Isadore and Hiram of Seattle, WA., Frank of San Francisco, CA.
and Elliot of Chicago, Il. It also mentioned a granddaughter. Strangely,
no wife was listed, although on the picture of his gravestone, his wife's
name is shown as Lizzie. I have found 3 of his son's names in the SSDI, but
can find no info on their children or spouses. I have checked libraries and
newspapers online so far. Any ideas? Can anyone can do obituary look-ups
for me in Seattle, San Francisco or Chicago? I am happy to look up
information in Portland or Eugene, Oregon if anyone needs it.

Thanks in advance!
