neighborhood shul? #general

Joy Weaver <joyweave@...>

I can't seem to find my grandmother or grown uncles (grfather had died)
in the NY City Street Dir. around the year 1910. I hoped to use that
information to find them in the 1910 census.

Since they were Orthodox, I know they had to live within walking
distance of their shul. So the question is: did people stay at the
same synagogue and move only within a few blocks of it, or did they tend
to move to a new neighborhood and establish themselves in the closest
shul?

I was going through the Phila census, just a few weeks ago. It is
organized by ward and district. Our library had a map showing the
various wards, and a description of the district boundaries on micro
film. Armed with detailed maps printed out >from mapquest.com, it
was fairly simple to determine the districts I needed to look at.

Re: uncle-niece marriages in Rhode Island #general

Paula Spier <pspier@...>

It wasn't _only_ Rhode Island that allowed uncle-niece marriaages. My
husband's grandfather, the youngest in a large family, married his niece,
the daughter of the oldest, in 1887. He had been working (unhappily) for
her father as a young man, and simply got on a train one day and got off
in Connecticut, where he worked as a farm laborer for several years. One
day he decided to go back to New York. The child he had taken on family
outings was now a young lady.
He wrote a memoir in his old age describing all this. He also wrote his
wife ("my own darling Sarah") every day whenever they were separated --
which they were for several months every single summer, for years. She
kept every single letter. There is no indication of anything furtive
about the marriage itself; the her branch of the family had money and
social status. (He was a struggling librarian-scholar-critic, and
eventually a lawyer-politician, but _never_ had any money.)
