Short Greek translation needed #general

Carol Rombro Rider

If anyone can translate two words in Greek that appear at a relative's
gravesite, please contact me.

I don't want to post it on Viewmate because the file is large but can
send you the scan of the two words.

Many thanks in advance,

Hi,

Smerl is not for Simcha but for Shmeryl, which is a nickname for
Shmaryahu. I have this name in my family.

The jewishgen given names database lists Shmerl as a form of the
biblical shemarya or shemaryahu.

Americanized. His son was Samuel, so we have ruled out that name but
are looking for suggestions as likely choices for Americanizing the

Missing portions of ship manifest #general

Mark Shapiro

David, Sure, & Taube FINKELMANN arrived on July 11 or 14, 1893,
at Ellis Island on the S.S. Wieland, sailing >from Bremen. On the
Ellis Island website's text version manifest, they are listed as line
nos. 910-912 of the steerage passenger list for that vessel. When
I click on the links for their names, however, I am taken to a copy
of the original ship manifest that ends with steerage passenger no.
211 and then continues with about 150 cabin passengers. The
same sheet appears for all steerage passengers after no. 211 on
the text version manifest.

Does anyone know how can I see the portion of the original ship
manifest with the Finkelmanns?

Civil records in Paris, precisons are necessary #general

Micheline GUTMANN

On GenAmi website, you may find all the details since long ago, even in
English.

Button "For all - Research guides"

I told it several times, so I am sorry to see that it is still new for some
people.

And there, it is written about the possibility to get Paris records on line.
** But ** it is necessary to read details: death records may be sent without any
delay, quite as soon as people died. 75 years is the delay for marriage and
birth records.

Another problem: it is much quicker if you know the "arrondissement", there
are 20 in Paris. It is possible to get it with the address if you know one.
Otherwise it may be found but it takes more time.

Until recently, in the margin of birth certificate, there were mentions of
marriages and death (places and dates).

Good luck !

The surname BISTRI #general

Mathilde

Dear all,

I am looking for the meaning and language of the name of a branch of
my family that was BISTRI. They lived in Ioannina, Greece, but moved
to Turkey to Manisa (close to Izmir) during the end of the 19th
century.

I am wondering if there is any link between this rare surname and the
names of the Romanian and Ukrainian localities BISTRA and BYSTRY.

Thanking you in advance for any clue,

Dubossary projects #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

To Bessarabian and Ukrainian researchers:

There are two major projects on a way for a town of Dubossary, before 1917
was in Kherson Gubernia of Russian Empire and now is part of Republic of
Moldova, Transnistria self-proclaimed territory. This and several other
towns in Transnistria are served by both Bessarabia SIG and Ukraine SIG.

I have completed Dubossary KehillaLinks website and soon it will be
available for everybody.
Second, we are starting Dubossary Cemetery project. I have already received
an index (in Russian) and about 250 photos >from new part of the cemetery.
The photos >from the old part will follow (1,500+). The old part has burials
from middle of 19 century or before.
In order to do this Cemetery project, we need a Project Leader, who will
work with translators and coordinate the project. If anyone is interested,
please come forward.

We also will need your donations to pay for the photographs. Please donate
$25, $50, $100 or more to Bessarabia-Moldova Cemetery Project. Go to
JewishGen.org / Donate / Bessarabia-Moldova Cemetery Project.
