Eliezer ben Yacov of Slonim #rabbinic

ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

Sometime ago, someone asked about rabbis who gave "haskamot" for the
book Shaar Hadrushim-chemdat Hayamim. Since an Eliezer of Slonim
appears in a superficial family tree sketch (during the early part
of the 19th cent) I'm wondering if anyone has a family tree of
Eliezer of Slonim.

Shabbat Shalom,

Yoni Ben-Ari, Efrat, Israel

Szczerzec, Kropiwnik Nowy, Jastrzebkow #general

Dear Galicianers:
Before JewishGen and until some years ago I knew only my great
grandparents names (Ana and Mechel Maurer Neuman) and the fact that they
lived in Boryslav, Galicia.
Blessed be the Internet, JewishGen, Valerie Schatzker and Alex Sharon
I now know that my great grandfather was a shoe maker (by reading a
translation of "A Tys'mienica Nadal Plynie" in
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Borislav/Borislav.html), that he lived
in the Moczary (swamps), his address was Mickiewicza 29 and that of
Uncle Faivish (my grandfather's brother) Hirscha 4 and that Mechel and
Chany got married in 1900.
All this raises more questions and I would be grateful to anybody with
hints:
The record of my great parents wedding is >from the town of Szczerzec. It
states that "MAURER r NEUMANN Mechel son of Jona Leib MAURER and Sosie
NEUMANN >from the town of Kropiwnik Nowy married Chany STREITFELD >from
the town of Jastrzebkow, daughter of Samuel Juda STREITFELD and Golda
HITZIG.
1. Were is Szczerzec?
2. Were is Kropiwnik Nowy?
3. Were is Jastrzebkow?

TYIA (Thank You In Advance)

Help with the given name "Israel" #general

Andrew Cohen <andyco5@...>

If a man's name was "Israel S. Fine", what might be a nickname that he
went by?

Isaac, Izzy?

I believe this Israel S. Fine married my ancestor in 1891, but I can't
find him in any letter census.

TIA,

Andrew Cohen

A Mystery Found in London Synagogue Marriage Registers #general

Harold Lewin <harmir@...>

Can anyone suggest a solution to the following mysterious entries discovered
during computerization of the marriage registers of the Great Synagogue,
London?

The two sources were the photocopy of the marriage certificate found in
another microfilm and the synagogue register.

1. >from the certificate: On 4th February 1863, Simon Henry 21, son of Henry
Henry, was married to Harriet Saunders 19, daughter of David Saunders.

2. >from the register: On 4th February 1863, Simon Henry (patronymic in
Hebrew script: Shimon ben Zvi Hirsch) was married to Hannah Saunders
(patronymic in Hebrew script: Yetta bat Dovid).

3. >from a later entry in the register: On 7th May 1863, Simon Henry
(patronymic in Hebrew script: Shimon ben Zvi Hirsch) was married to Harriet
Saunders (patronymic in Hebrew script: Sarah bat Avraham Avinu).

Can anyone solve the mystery? Harold Lewin - Jerusalem

Old age home & hospital, Vilkiviskis, Lithuania #general

RM Hoffman <rmhoffman@...>

My g-grandfather, Velvel SHEDLOVSKY, died at age 104 in an old age home in
Vilkiviskis, Lithuania. I believe a photograph of this building appears on
page 1397 of the new "Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and During the
Holocaust." Is the hospital still in existence and are there patient records
available?

Velvel's wife's name was Haude Baile. My grandfather, Jacob J. Shedlovsky, was
born Mar. 14. 1873 in Vilkiviskis, and emigrated to the U.S. in1892.

I understand that most records >from this town have been lost. Where can I look
for more information about the Shedlovsky family?

More gefilte fish tales #galicia

Dear All,

I have heard >from a few others, who share their stories:

Shirley Pencer wrote:

The Shtetl Book by D.K. and David G. Roskies , Ktav Publishing co., ISBN
0-87068-455-8, pp36-37 describes the "Gefilte Fish Line" which demarcates
places to the east as cooking the fish without sugar.

Francine Shapiro wrote in two messages:

1. My uncle said that my grandmother brought home live carp and kept them in
the bathtub. They all had to bathe before the carp arrived, and had to wait
afterwards to eat the gefilte fish. He doesn't remember if it was sweet or
not, but it was always very good.

2. Here is a recipe for Potato Ahnbren - i.e. pareve potato soup.
My mother talked of it, but it was years before I came upon the recipe.
Tip: make the roux in a teflon-coated pot or pan. It stops
being a sticky mess, and slides easily into the soup.
4 potatoes, diced
2 carrots, sliced
1 stalk of celery, medium slices
1 chopped onion
2Tflour
2T margarine or butter
salt and pepper to taste
6 cups water

Cook the potatoes in boiling, salted water 5 mins. Add
carrots, celery, and onion and simmer.
In a frying pan, blend equal amounts of margarine or flour until the
mixture turns brown. Add small amounts of the liquid >from the soup
to the frying pan until the mixture becomes smooth, then pour and stir
the brown mixture slowly into the soup pot. Add salt and pepper to taste
and simmer until the vegetables are soft.

Thanks to Shirley and Francine!
