The name Shuli #general

cbishoes <cbishoes@...>

Dear all,
Many many thanks for the overwhelming response to my query about the
given name Shuli. I had no idea whether it was a masculine or a
feminine reference. Almost all of you wrote that it was a diminutive
for Sulamit or Shulamith who was my mother, but who had not been born
at the time of the name's appearance in my grandmother's
correspondence. This would make Shuli either my grandmother's
grandmother, or a very close friend. (Her mother was Sheina). I'm
guessing there are other possibilities as well.
Here is another possibile explanation I developed after reading Bieder
and Feldblyum which came in the mail two days ago. I am not an
onomastician, but here goes:
In Feldbluym's book of Russian-Jewish given names at turn of the century
Russia, he does not cite Shuli as a nickname or diminutive for
Shulamith. Since so many of you stated without hesitation that it was
indeed a nickname for Shulamith, I am guessing that in fact in the
decades following the turn of the century, that it became so, but was
not in general use in this form at the turn of the century.
Shuela and Shueli do appear in Feldbluym's book as abbreviations for the
Hebrew Yehoshuea or Yehoshia. I still do not know for sure who Shuli
is, but I think I am getting closer.
If anybody has any thoughts about this, I'd be very interested to hear
from you.

Re: Shraga Fayvel #lithuania

GERRE WADE <VATH51B@...>

Do you suppose that Shraga is synonomous with Fishel? My
grandfather's name was Abraham Fishel but on my parents' Ketuba, his
name, written in Hebrew letters, was Shraga. This wasn't discovered
until 23 years after my grandfather's death. The family assumed that
the Rabbi who filled out the information had made a mistake. Just
wondering. Gerre Wade

Searching CLURFELD / SIEGFRIED #general

Toni Valenstein <tovaknits@...>

I keep running into dead ends when researching my Mother's maiden name
and my maiden name. I have very facts.

Mother's maiden name is CLURFELD - supposedly there was no translation
of the Russian letters when they arrived, through Ellis, so some became
CLURFELD, KLURFELD, CLEARFELD, any other variation. My grandfather Leo
CLURFELD, arrived in 1920, >from Russia (Kiev?). My grandmother Bertha
(Berezna ?) arrived with my Mom, Sarah, in 1922, by way of Istanbul,
possibly on the Rotterdam(?).

My father's name was Harold SIEGFRIED. My g-grandparents arrived in NY
in the mid-1800s, >from Austria. Both my grandmother (Bessie GOLDSMITH)
and my grandfather William SIEGFRIED, were born in NY.

Anyone have info about any of these names, please contact me.

Hi Galicianers,

Another Austrian address could be very useful as it includes some
special information re Galicia:

Institute of Hostorical Family Finding, Vienna
www.netway.at/ihff/index.htm

Yes, we call our city Wien in German language. All the best >from here.
If you visit Austria, look to www.leonardo-sys.com/netMUSEUM if you are
interested -- maybe also for research -- and www.wienweb.at for Vienna
visitors.

Would be nice to meet you there for a coffee, but please do not all

JGS of Tampa Bay, FL #general

Baron, Mark A (FL51) <mabaron@...>

It is with great pleasure that we announce the formation of the Jewish
Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay, FL.

This will fill a long overdue need to provide both a forum and a focal point
for Jewish genealogical research and information exchange to the residents
of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and surrounding counties. This
organization is not meant to replace or compete with other neighboring JGS's
(such as Greater Orlando or Sarasota) but rather to complement their
activities. Several of our members are already members of these and other
JGS's and expect to so remain. We are merely trying to provide similar
services to the Jewish genealogical community a little closer to home.

We look forward to announcing our first major program meeting in the near
future.

We encourage all interested parties in the area to contact us at one of the
e-mail addresses below for further information:
