Re: Searching for Burial Site of Morris NADANER #general

My grandfather's youngest brother Morris NADANER died shortly after
emigrating to NY >from Warsaw. I don't have a date, only know that he
arrived in NY in 1913 at age 8. The family lived in Manhattan. I have
checked NY Vital records for all boroughs for the period 1913 through
1920 (am fairly sure he died in 1913 or 1914). The rest of the family is
buried in Baron Hirsch in S.I. in the plot belonging to Greater N.Y.
Sick and Benevolent Society. The next death in the family occurred in
1936 so it is possible that the family was not associated with the
Society at the time of Morris' death.

I am at a loss.... trying to locate the grave of Morris Nadaner or his
death certificate for about 10 years. I would really appreciate any
suggestions for where I can search, who I can write to etc.

Thank you.

Searching for SPIEGELS #general

ellen graham <egraham@...>

I am searching for information on the SPIEGEL family. My great grandmother
was Rose (Rosa) SPIEGEL born in 1871, possibly in Warsaw. She emigrated in
1884 with her parents Schuber Spiegel and Bessi Chaja PLOCKER Spiegel. I
know Rose had at least two brothers one names Abe, the other Sam but I am
not sure where they were born... I suspect they were younger than Rose but
do not think they were born in the US.

One of Rose's brothers was killed by a trolley in NY. The other had a
daughter who was called Beatie (presumably Beatrice). I know that both Sam
and Abe lived in Brooklyn, although at some point I suspect they lived near
Delancey Street or Ludlow Street. I have vague memories of Beatie Spiegel
from the 1960's but lost track of her.
Please contact me if any of these names are familiar.

Thank you.

Ellen

I would guess that the Yiddish Feivel could have been mixed-up with Fishel.

Shraga Faivel #lithuania

Harold Rhode <hrhode@...>

Usually Shraga goes with Faivel/faivush, or the Hebrew Uri/Ori. Shraga is
Aramaic for Light. Or is the Hebrew equivalent. For some reason, Faivel
is the Yiddish equivalent.

Fishel is usually paired with Yerucham.

How do you pronounce "uyezd"? #lithuania

Steve Eller asked:

<< How do you pronounce "uyezd"? >>

The best explanation - and one that I'll always remember - came >from Vitalija
Gircyte. She said "just think of two words - "ooh" and "yezzd" - combine
them as if you were answering a question in the affirmative - "ooh-yezzd" -
and you've got it.

School in Warsaw #general

Larry E. Oppenheimer <loppen@...>

My great grandfather attended the "Gimnasium of Warshow" around 1875. Is
there any source of information about the school? Does it still exist?

Thanks.

Re: Jewish Photo Archives #general

Dear People,

Another photo archive which may be of interest to Jewishgenners is one
held by the Terezin Music Foundation, which I just learned about, and whose
website I visited yesterday. This is an organization devoted to preserving
and playing the music of people who were in the Theresienstadt
concentration camp. (Some of the composers were Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein,
Hans Krasa, and Victor Ullman.) The contents of the photoarchive are not
online. For more information visit the website at:

Women from 1900 census #general

IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>

The 1900 census gives us a Philadelphia Picholtz family which
included two daughters (aged 22 and 18) that the nearest family
never heard of. The older brother remained in Philadelphia.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? Is there a marriage index of
some sort for Philadelphia, for instance?
