Re: Hebrew names #bessarabia

My grandmother Fanny BERNS (nee MILLETT)(1900-1980) had the Hebrew name
Feygeleh. She was named after her paternal grandmother Feyge sarah
MILLET,who lived and died in Dabrowa Tarnowska,Galicia. Grandma had an elder
brother Louis, but I don't know his Hebrew name: Leib seems a good guess.

Feige? I was also wondering if the name Sonny(Sunny) is a derivative of =

Libau #latvia

Knud and Lorraine Bertelsen <klb@...>

Dear fellow researchers,

Further to Charlotte's plea for assistance, I am afraid I am not able to
translate either German or Latvian, so I unable to volunteer for these
particular translation projects Charlotte mentioned.

However, after reading Charlotte's message I thought that perhaps you might
find interesting a page (in German) which was sent to me by Dr. Aleksandrs
Feigmanis when he did some research for me some time ago. My husband
translated this for me, but it may not be completely accurate as his
schoolboy German was learned in Denmark more than 50 years ago.

The page is an extract >from :
1812 - Der Feldzug in Kurland - The Campaign (War-Like Expedition) in Kurland
by Julius von Hartvich (Hartwich)
from the diaries and briefings >from the Lieutenant Julius von Hartwich at
that time
Leib-Grenadier Regiment Konig Friedrich Wilhelm III
i.e. Life Grenadier Regiment of King Friedrich Wilhelm III (First
Brandenburger No.8)
Compiled/edited by Rudiger v. Schoeter - Berlin 1910

Here is a translation of a paragraph which mentioned Libau :

Quote
Libau (Liebau) is also beautiful as well as a rich little town of
approximately 6,000 citizens by the Baltic Sea with a beautiful harbour
built by the mouth/outflow of the Liebauer River?
The houses are mostly built entirely >from timber but are not very
beautifully constructed. The windows are beautified with plate glass. The
benches in front of the shops are painted with green or red oil paint. The
town has five churches and one synagogue. unquote

I think the 1812 Campaign could have been part of the Napoleonic war
against Russia, but as I do not remember much about the campaigns of
Napoleon, I am not quite sure how German/Prussian troops were involved in
1812, or if this German/Prussian campaign was totally separate >from
Napoleon's "adventures"

I have a copy of the cover of this book, which included a portrait of
Hartwich, wearing his Iron Crosses, plus pages 48/89 only, and would be
happy to send a copy to either Arlene or Charlotte.

Solly asked about the discrepancy between Gary Mokotoff's film number and
the FHLC on-line. The answer is simple. The on-line catalog is incomplete.
There are a lot of films not listed there. As a matter of fact, the
computers at the FHCs are not complete either and have little quirks.

Vilijampole History #lithuania

This week I heard back >from the Kaunas City Archives about my GERMAN
ancestors >from Vilijampole. This new information, combined with the
previously received data >from the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in
Vilnius, gives a fairly good picture of the GERMAN family in Vilijampole.
It goes back to one Baruch, who was probably born in the 1730's (his son
Abram was born in 1767). Is there someone who can tell me when Jews,
especially German Jews (their name was really HERMAN, but, of course,
spelled GERMAN in Russian) first came to Vilijampole and suggest a good
history (in English) to consult?

EISNER/NIEMAN #general

Richard Easener <richard.easener@...>

I am not Jewish, but my Father's family were.Has anyone come across
Simon/Shimon Eisner, b. Kazan, Tartarstan, 1866 and his wife Fanny, b.
Lodz, Poland/Russia,1869? They came to U.K. about 1895 with 1 son ,Morris
and had 5 further children once settled here in Leeds.
Would there be any record of their arrival in this country and where would
I look for it? Morris was naturalized in 1920 and adopted the name EASNER,
a name my father also used, and under which he married my [non-Jewish]
mother and I was baptised.
Any assistance as to how I might trace this line back would be appreciated
Thank You

Re: Yochwit=Yocheved=?Esther #general

Jim Bennett <bennett@...>

Here's a speculation, based on my experience: The Hebrew name Yocheved
in 19th century Germany was usually converted into Hedwig as a good
"German" name. Similarly, in Poland, Yocheved became Jadwiga -- who was
once a Queen of Poland. Now we know that Esther in Persia was "Queen
Esther" --Ester HaMalka in Hebrew. So maybe our little Jewish girl was
given a double name: Yocheved Esther. It makes sense.
