Moderator plea and Happy Pesach #latvia

Arlene Beare <arl@...>

The job of moderating demands a lot of editing which may come as a surprise
to some of you.
I am not a school teacher but it really distresses me to post messages that
have sentences that do not start with a capital letter, have names of town
and countries in lower case and occasionally there is very little
punctuation. Editing is not just a case of editing the message as you read
it and sometimes due to the constraints of time I have to let the message
pass with a lot of inaccuracies.
I have really delighted at the new vibrancy that I detect in the newgroup
so please keep your messages coming. We all benefit >from the exchange.
Problems are usually shared by many others and so the answers are of
general benefit.
It is often difficult to decide whether you should reply to a message or
wait for one of the usual suspects such as Constance,Martha or myself to
reply. I would like to assure you that it does not matter how many replies
are posted and the same answer to a query will reinforce the reply. Once
the thread is exhausted it will be closed.

I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy Pesach.

I hope that you will try to come to London to the Conference in July as it
will be so nice to meet you.

I have no idea what Alk family, but I went to school, many moons ago, in the

Dear Mr. Cohen and other friend of Litvaksig, to whom it may concern,
Shalom >from Yerushalayim,

As you can find in my book THE LITVAKS (p.81) over 1,500 Lithuanian Jewish
families had settled in Kherson and other localities in Southern Russia. While a large proportion of of thesemade their living >from rafts or agriculture, there were others who engaged in petty trade and peddling.Once settled, they attracted relatives, friends and
aquaitances to these regions.

Geraldine Power's letters >from her Grandfather opened the flood gates of
memory for me.

I lived with my grandparents in the 1930's in England and remember well how important it was to receive and discuss letters >from family in the "Heime".I wonder therefore, would it be possible for our litvak sig or for Jewish Geneology to edit an electronic Yiddish letter scrap book, into which anyone
could post their family's yiddish letters.

They wouldn't have to be translated.

If enough accumulate, the scrap book could become an important Yiddish
literary and historical source - possibly even a latter-day Geneza.

Notes and extra names for Kishinev 1863,64 #general

Vladimir Tetelbaum

Hi,

Slowly I am making progress through Kishinev birth
records. To my surprise there are 60% fewer records
for the whole year 1863 than for 1864 and later. The
writing seems different too. I wonder if there are
other sources for birth records.

As usual I offer extra names >from copies I made for
myself. The list is divided by year and month, but
it is in no way complete. Let me know if any name
poses an interest and I will email more info (free of
charge).

Boston HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) records are kept by the
American Jewish Historical Society. While their main facility recently
moved to NYC, they still maintain the Boston HIAS records, and I believe
most/all Boston-related materials, in their facility on the campus of
Brandeis Univ., in Waltham MA. Their holdings are described very well in
the following Infofile: http://www.jewishgen.org/jgsgb/ajhs.html

Make sure that you check _all_ of the Boston HIAS records, not just the
arrival records. I recently found a massive amount of correspondence there
regarding the efforts of my wife's g-grandfather and his cousins to help
out their cousins in Europe who had managed to survive the Holocaust and
who were in DP camps or elsewhere.
