A sucess story with the new updates of the Romanian database. #romania

Alan Tapper <sabaalan@...>

I know that Warren Blatt had recently been given an award but I would like
to thank him and all the others who made these updates to the Romanian
Database possible.

I did not expect to find anything when I typed in my last name and did a
search but was very surprised to seen my great aunt's birth in 1890 recorded
in the Kishinev birth records. I not only got her date of birth right but
I received information about two generations further back as they listed the
fathers and grandfathers on both sides of the family.

I also found that the last name was spelled slightly different at that time.
The Yiddish spelling was the same but the pronunciation was different. The
name was TEPER not TAPPER.

STEINBERG #lithuania

Hamilton, Lawrence R. <LHamilton@...>

It is quite likely that Samuel STEINBERG's hometown was LUDWINOWO
(modern Liudvinavas), a town located 5.8 miles due south of MARIJAMPOLE
and 7.4 miles south of KALVARIYA. I have seen many references to
LUDWINOWO residents in the MARIJAMPOLE vital records but wonder whether
there might also be some in the KALVARIYA records (which unfortunately
are not extant).

Samuel STEINBERG left Hamburg on 11 February 1
874, passenger # 62, a kaufman [merchant], >from "Litvinowo." He arrived
in the US, and settled in Indiana.

I am most eager to find out more about his life in the home country, but
find no entries in the JGFF or any in the ALD which seem useful. I
have obtained all the STEINBERG certificates >from Marijampole, where his
daughter later married, but nothing seems to link in yet.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards

Would a record of the passport still be on file?

I would have thought that the visa to enter Argentina would have been issued
by the Argentina Embassy.

Seeking LEVI in Baltimore from Kassel, Germany #usa

Joan Norris <bnorris@...>

I am searching for the parents of my gggrandmother who came from
Kassel, Germany to Baltimore in the mid 19th century.

My gggrandmother was Betti LEVI. I found a partial 1850 census on the internet
which included a family grouping with this name for a 39 year old female and
an adult male of the same age, Joseph, and a 6 year old female, Letta
(followed by a question mark). The age of the child is 4 years off, as
my gggrandmother was born in 1837 or 1840 so would have been 10 to 13
in 1850.

Is Betti LEVI a common name, or could I actually have found
the family? How much wiggle room can one assume on ages in the census?

Is it possible the 10-13 year old was not home and the census taker
didn't ask if there were other children? Where can I get a complete
census for 1850, 1860 and 1870? Also, what would be the best way to
acquire or see passenger lists for the Port of Baltimore?
