I am trying to find any descendants of the following
persons who arrived in NYC >from Lyakhovichi in Minsk
Gubernia, in an attempt to establish whether they were
related to my ggf Todres Zalman Kirzner who was born
in 1874 in Lyakhovichi.

Simche Kirschner arr. prior to 1904
Mordche Kirschner arr. 21 Jan 1904, age 22

Rafael Kirsner arr. 10 June 1906, age 20
Meyer Kirsner arr. 19 March 1907,age 17

I believe the above men were children of David
Kirschner who arrived 30 aug. 1907, age 60 with his
wife Chaie, age 55 and two children.

Another Lyakhovicher, Hinde Kirzner arr. 3 april 1906,
age 18, daughter of Moishe and going to her brother B.

Questions to someone fluent in Turkish #sephardic

Mathilde Tagger <tagger@...>

Dear all,

I came across the Jewish surname of Tchakarov found in Bulgaria.
Ov is the regular Bulgarian ending of names that means "son of".
So I can deduce that the core of the surname is Tchakar that sounds Turkish.
To those who are fluent in Turkish I have two questions:
1. How Tchakar would be spelled in Turkish
2. In case such a word exists in Turkish, what does it mean?

Many thanks in advance,
And Happy 2008!

According to history.com the late Jack Benny (d. in 1974) was a litvak. His
name was Benjamin Kubelsky. Does anyone know more about his roots?

US Census help #general

A. E. Jordan

I am embarrassed that I can not solve this one myself
but maybe someone else has the magic touch. I am looking
for the family of Harry NATHAN in the US Federal Census.

On the 1915 NY State Census I find Harry NATHAN age 25 living
at 168 South Second Street in Brooklyn. It says he is 7 years
in the USA and he is Austrian. His wife is Rose and she is 23
and 6 years in the USA. They both are aliens. They also have two
children born in the US: Jacob age 4 and Harriett
age 3.

Seems simple enough that they should show up in the Federal
Census again in 1920 or somewhere again. This is the one and only
mention I find of Harry NATHAN.

I checked the Brooklyn address in 1920 and he is not there.
He is not in the commercial index online unless they so twisted
the names that I do not find anyone >from the family. Where did
the family go?

If anyone knows of this Harry NATHAN and family or can find them
in the Census I would be grateful. The kicker is that the NATHAN
family is living in the same house as my great grandparents and of
course it is a common name but my great grandmother Eva Sanders
was a Nathan by birth. Eva in 1915 is is listed as age 47 so
could this be a much younger brother or cousin?

Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

I had posted about my grandmother Irma Johanna LOEWENBERG coming >from Berlin
at age 12. She left behind 9 brothers. Thanks for the few emails I received
giving me pointers, & now I do have 2 names of her 9 brothers. One was
Walter & the other was Erich. The other 7 will probably remain a mystery.
