HILL family and the 1900 & 1920 Federal Census #general

Dina Hill

I went back to the 1900 Census for Aaron and Sarah HILL and I realized
something thanks to a Jewishgenner so kind to help me out as well as others.
The columns were not quite the same as they were in the 1920 census. In the
1900 Census, column 16 asks year of immigration. Aaron put 1886 (he arrived
Nov. 1885 for sure >from the ship's manifest that I have)and Sarah put 1887.
Their son Benjamin was born September 1887 but on the 1920 census, in the
column that asks what year did you arrive, they have written there 1896
which is definitely wrong. In the 1900 census, column 17 asks "Number of
years in the USA" and column 18 just says "Naturalization" (not the year).

Sarah Hill did not come to New York in 1887 the way her husband did in 1885.
And if he got it wrong himself, saying he came here in 1886 when I have the
ship's manifest to show he arrived in November 1885, then as someone here
pointed out, there's a good chance that she arrived at a different port like
Philadelphia rather than New York. The only thing I know for sure is that
their son Benjamin was born in New York September 1887. Whether he was
born a CHILL or a HILL, I don't know but in 1900, they were HILL. I can't
find any legal document to show the name change. I have sent letter to the
National Archives with the ship's information and the year Aaron said he was
Naturalized but no Naturalization papers could be found.

If anyone thinks they can help me, please e-mail me. I really need to find
out how Sarah (or Sura) Rubinstein/Rubenstajn Chill HILL arrived. If she
was married to him before she got here, then was she a CHILL or a HILL?

Best Regards,

Dina Hill

Census transcriptions and mistranscriptions #general

Barbara Zimmer

Dear Genners:
As an example ot bad writing and worse transcription, I offer an
example >from the 1930 US census for my family in East Orange NJ. At a
popular paid website, my grandmother, Anna, is transcribed as
"Arena" and her youngest daughter is transcribed as "Theobald"
although her name is Lucille! My uncle is transcribed as Wilbur and
his name was Milton! Granted, the census taker had really bad
handwriting and poor spelling, but I dare not tell my elderly aunt
that she was "Theobald" in 1930!

I have sent in corrections, but **their version still takes precedence.....

Re: Hair color hane? #general

Jules Levin

I submitted this as a linguistic puzzle to my Slavic and East European
Languages list (SEELANGS), and received interesting comments.

I will only mention what I think is the most plausible:
One responder cited the German word hanebuechen, abbreviated to 'hane',
meaning 'nondescript'. An American ship could have had a German purser
[or whichever officer compiled the manifest] who knew the common color
names in English but slipped at 'nondescript'.

Some responders on SEELANGS asked to see the original.
It would be good if it were possible to send a copy.

Rabbi Raphael Halperin in his encyclopedia Etz Hayim lists haRav Eliezer
WINTNER #2351 as one of the great rabbis of Hungary. He was rabbi in
Breif(sp!) and Av Bet Din in Shtempan (sp!). He was a disciple of haRav
Moshe Sofer.
He died in 1893 at the age of 41.
I would appreciate *any* information: scholastic, rabbinic, family, genealogy,
etc.
Thank you all'

National Archives Budget Approved and Enacted #general

jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>

As you may recall the National Archives budget was a concern last year and this
year. The FY 2008 budget that President Bush just signed into law increases the
National Archives budget by 20.5% over Fiscal Year 2007 which was a continuation
budget >from FY 2006. The FY 2008 appropriation is $411.1 million.

Of great interest to genealogists are the following provisions:
Provision of $2.1 million to restore important customer services: $1.3 million
to return to the public research hours that were reduced in October 2006 and
$800,000 to hire more staff archivists to replace those who have left the agency
in the past few years. The agency has 30 days to report to Congress on its
progress in these two areas.

Continuation of the work on the Electronic Records Archives (ERA) provision of
full funding of $58 million, compared to last year’s funding level of $45.2
million. However, the spending measure requires the agency to submit to Congress
a spending plan before any multi-year funds are obligated.

For more details on the appropriations for the National Archives in the FY budget,
you can access the press release by Archivist Weinstein at:

Hi, Is there anyone that has visited the cemetery in Dubrowa
Bialostocka lately and has any info on it? I did read about
the restoration of the fence, but nothing about the tombstones,
how many of them are readable, and if anybody was working
on documenting them. I would also appreciate any info
as to vital records of the city (which I know dosen't exist in
the city archives). At last is there any survivor that I can
briefly interview on a few relatives I had there?.

Thanks to all
