Dirschau. Could the surname have been LANDON? There is a record of a Götz
LANDON and his wife, Rahel ROSENBAUM >from the Family History Microfilm
pertaining to Jewish records for Dirschau 1828 - 1848. (Dirchau,

the web at:
http://hem.bredband.net/fredzi/Dirschau/Records/default.html
in 2009 by Fred Zimmak of Stockholm, Sweden.

Since Mendel was born in 1824 and the records only cover the years of 1828
and on, it is understandable that his birth would not have been recorded in
this microfilm.

witnesses to metrical records in Tsarist Russia #lithuania

Herbert Lazerow

It might help to be clearer about the function of the witness.
This is obscure in most records I have examined, but some records will
say explicitly something like: "X came to see me and told me of the birth
of his son Khaim Yankel." The witness was not a witness to the birth.
The witness is certifying that the recorder has faithfully recorded what
X told him.

Lustgarten from Lukavec #austria-czech

rlsavin@...

Hello all,

I need some help figuring out a family I am researching. I am
interested in the LUSTGARTEN family that emigrated to New York from
Lukavec in 1901. They always said they were >from Prussia but I see on
some censuses they listed it as Austria. I did some digging and was
able to find their hometown. It is now in the Czech Republic. Can
anyone tell me if they've had any success in researching there? Did
this town have a strong Jewish community? Any chance of any Jewish
cemeteries or records still intact?
I am hoping to plan a family roots trip there in the spring if I'm
able to figure out more information and would love to get guide
recommendations.
Thanks for your thoughts and help.

Menk's _Dictionary of German-Jewish Surnames_ says that the LAUDONs
moved to Dirschau, possibly >from Christburg, in 1824. One of the many
possible derivations he gives is (what a surprise!) LEWIN. Under LANDON
he merely notes: cf. LAUDON.

Ancestry.CA-Canada Offering Free Access To Select Canadian Military Records Through November 12, 2012 #general

Jan Meisels Allen

For those researching Canada, you may find this offering of interest--you
need not be located in Canada to take advantage of this.

In commemoration of Remembrance Day known as Veterans Day in certain parts
of the world, and formerly Armistice Day, Ancestry.ca (CA-Canada) is
offering free access to select records in their Canadian Military Records
Collection through November 12, 2012 11:59 p.m. (ET). Go to:
www.ancestry.ca/remember and click on the right hand tab that says Free
Military Records. Examples of the free collections include: Canada, Soldiers
of the First World War 1914-1918; Canada, CEF Commonwealth War Graves
Registers, 19140-1919, enlistment records, casualty records and officer
lists. If you click on the other tabs: US Military Records, UK Military
Records and German Military Records you will find a few records that are
listed as free--(see lower left of screen). To access those records you
will also have to register.

To view these records you will need to register for free with Ancestry.ca
with your name and email address. Once you have registered they will then
send you a user name and password to access the records. If you haven't
already registered, you will be prompted to register once you start trying
to search and view the records.

Note: If you click on " 14-day trial" you will be asked for your credit
card--that is a different promotion than the Free Access to Canadian
Military Records. If you try to access a record that is not offered in the
free military records, Ancestry will prompt you to the 14-day trial-- be
mindful of which records you are selecting.

I have no affiliation with Ancestry.com or any of its affiliates.
