Bruno Kahane & Emmy Hahn #general

Diana da Costa

I applied for a marriage certificate in the UK for Emmy Hahn and received
the certificate of another Emmy Hahn who married Bruno Kahane on 4th
September 1939 in Birmingham. At the time Bruno was 31 years old and gave
his occupation as a timber merchant and Emmy was 27 years old and worked as
a housekeeper. Bruno's father is stated as Ignaz Kahane and Emmy's father
is stated as Max Hahn. Bruno and Emmy both give their address in Harbourne,
a suburb of Birmingham: 97, Metchley Lane.

As I have no use for this certificate, if anyone would like to acquire it,
please email me with your postal address and I shall send it to you.

EIDELMAN & KOSTIN - Zhitomir #general

Rony Golan

Dear friends,

I am looking for the EIDELMAN family of Zhitomir:

Chayim EIDELMAN (son of Yakov-Mordechai) married Beila KOSTIN
(daughter of Zalman).

They had at least three children: Chana, Sara, Zalman.

I haven't been able to find anything on them (or the KOSTIN family) in
any of the online databases.

If you have any information on this family, please contact me privately.

Many thanks,

Rony Golan

Aleksander Karpov from Baranovichi #general

boris

Aleksander Karpov (possibly Karpovich) was born in Minsk ca. 1917. In 1946,
he worked in the passport issuing office (passportnyj stol in Russian) in
Baranovichi where he used his position to issue false documents to Jews who
wanted to get out of the Soviet Union. He was, presumably arrested in late
1946 and executed in February, 1947.

It is possible his name was not even Karpov, but the circumstances are
"accurately" remembered, as per my elderly distant cousin.

This situation was not unique. I personally knew two people who were
involved in similar underground activities after the war, although in
Lithuania. Both were caught, both served about 8-10 years in the camps.

If the Karpov story rings a bell with anybody, even remotely, please write
me a note. It would be nice to learn more details about this man, while some
of the beneficiaries of his efforts are still with us. Even if *your* story
took place in another town, or its central figure was a woman, not a man -
it may still contain clues. People in the USSR knew well how to hide their
traces.

Yahrzeit tablet-Hebrew translation #lithuania

J Weisman

Dear Siggers,

I am unfamiliar with Yahrzeit tablets, and wonder if it is at all
possible that they reveal details such as village, synagogue, cemetery,
etc. I have a working translation of the person in this tablet, believed
to be my gg grandmother Ita KACYZNSKI (married name DOGOVSKI) who lived
in Seirijai Lithuania. Is there nothing to indicate her or her father's
surname? And is there any way to translate 10th AdarII 1908 into a
Gregorian date?

This is the full tablet:

This is an article about him in the yizkor book of Jezendiv, (written
by his son Chaim Yehosua of Miami Beach).
His first wife was a daughter of R' Akiva Beker of Jezendiv.
He was a Talmid (student) of Rabbi Yerachmiel Moshe Minzberg Rav of
Lukov, and later the first rabbi of Jezendiv.
He was a Chasid of Rebbi Shraga Yair (Rabinowitz) of Bialobezeq. (A
great grandson of the "Yehudi Hkadosh" of Peshischa).

Thanks,

1927 Cadastral Maps of Tarnow in the Gesher Galicia Map Room #poland

Jay Osborn <jay.osborn@...>

A coordinated effort by Gesher Galicia volunteers and contractors has
helped bring you two versions of a 1927 cadastral map of Tarnow,
posted today on the Gesher Galicia Map Room:

https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/tarnow-tarnau-tarna-1927-1/
https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/tarnow-tarnau-tarna-1927-2/

Cadastral maps for the important Galician city of Tarnow (Tarnau,
Tarna, Torne) have eluded our archive searches since the beginning of
the Map Room; this has been near the top of our 'wanted' list for
years, and last year we expanded our search outside the southeast
Polish state archives to other map holdings, with no luck. Then in
early January, Maciej Orzechowski (GG research associate in SE Poland)
conducted another phone search and found maps at the Municipal Office
in Tarnow, in their geodesic documentation center. In April, GG board
chair Tony Kahane visited that office with our Warsaw representative
Piotr Gumola, and together they arranged for clear digital scans of
the two maps by the cartography department, along with map descriptive
info.

Although worn and incomplete, the maps are clearly numbered and
labeled, and represent a valuable record of the city during the
interwar period. The maps are based on an 1848 Austrian survey, but
updated in 1927 to reflect changes and adding street names. Key
pre-WWII city features of the entire downtown are shown, including two
synagogues and the Jewish hospital.

Anyone with an interest in historic Tarnow will enjoy browsing these
maps and comparing them to the modern city. We are grateful to find
these maps cared for (and still in use) by the Municipal Office:
