Suchostaw massacre #galicia

jonathanridgeway@...

Shalom -

There's a story I've heard repeated which derived >from actual
eyewitness accounts. It was said that when the local population of
Suchostaw heard reports that the Germans were marching into their
neighborhood, they already knew what was being done to the Jews. They
preempted the arrival of the Germans by rounding up the elderly or sick
Jewish men, the women, the children and many of the able body men as
well.

They excluded some of the strong young people because they knew the
Germans wanted them for the work camps. After all were assembled, other
than those "chosen people", the men were ordered to dig a pit. Those
too sick or weak, the women and the children were pushed in while still
alive or shot and then buried, and finally, the men who had done the
work were pushed and buried too. In the words of the witness,
"afterward, the earth moved for three day and three nights." Only a
small number of the men were able to escape into the woods in the dark
of night and run away.

I would be most grateful if anyone who may knows any more details would
please contact me at jonathanridgeway@aol.com. I would particularly be
interested in learning the exact or approximate date or even just the
year and if there in anywhere I might read more about these tragic
events. Thank you.

looking for Rebbetzin Eydele of Brody #galicia

Justin Jaron Lewis <jjl@...>

For ongoing research I am looking for any and all information about Eydele,
the daughter of Rebbe Shalom of Belz and wife of Rabbi Isaac Rubin, who
lived in Brody. According to various accounts, she acted as a Hasidic
rebbe and was known for her wisdom and miracles; resented her brother,
Joshua of Belz, who succeeded her father as Belzer Rebbe (although a
daughter of hers married a son of his); and was possessed by a dybbuk which
her brother exorcised.

I am aware of the chapter on her in Dov Sadan's memoirs, Yoram Bilu's
article about her based on Sadan's account, a story in the Hasidic tale
collection Dover Shalom, Yitzhak Buxbaum's retelling of this story in
_Jewish Holy Women_, and some scattered references in other Hasidic sources.

I would be grateful for any references to other literary sources, and
especially for any oral traditions about her or information on her descendants.

With thanks,

Justin Jaron Lewis

Good morning A-C SIG:

For some time, the A-C homepage has said that members are working on

there any (full translations scheduled to be available on-line and will

I just noticed that there are some additions on the Family History
(Mormons) website on Vienna Jewish records; Here is what you can find:

1. Kartei zu den Matriken der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde, 1810 - 1938,
Gauamt fuer Sippenforschung (Card index of registers of the Jewish
community, District office for Race research)
Comment: These index cards seem to have been made during the Nazi era.
They may contain important information.

2. Matrikel der Juedischen Gemeinde 1826 - 1938 (Register of the
Jewish Community)
111 films, published in 1980
78 films, published in 2004
Comment: I am very familiar with the 111 films, which are the BMD
record copies >from the Vienna city archive.
I have not seen any of the 78 films, but according to the website
these are also BMD records. It could be that these are the original
records >from the Jewish Community, or maybe a more complete refilming
of the registers of held at the City Archive. It should be noted that
although nominally duplicates, the IKG registers and those at the
City Archive might not be identical.

3. Matrikel 1830 - 1938 (Jewish Community records).
5 films, published in 1999
This is a card index of names A - B

4. Matrikel 1870 - 1914
Circumcision and birth records
1 film, originally 1939, >from Berlin.

5. Matrikel 1914 - 1918
3 films, published in 2002
Oesterreichische Militaerfuersorge (Austrian Military Ministry)
Birth and Marriage / Jewish soldiers 1915 - 1918

I am rather surprised that Leslie Eloed's comments on
Kertesz's extraordinary literary account of the Shoah
experience >from an adolescent point of view, only had
one reaction. FAteless the book, or Fatelessness as the
new translation calls it,as well as the excellent film
based on the book, capture the naivete of those who
were marginal to the events and still were sucked into
them. Film and book well deserve prize and

Kollel Shomrei Hachomos #hungary

On Friday I was given a clipping >from the English-language edition of the
newspaper Hamodia >from earlier this week, announcing that "historical
preservation project" is unmderway which has discovered "rare documents
documenting the history of Kollel Shomrei Hachomos" in Jerusalem. these
documents include"a receipt book dating back over 120 years, detailing
distribution of funds to members of the Kollel" which is itself 150 years
old. The prioject is being run by Rabbi Yosef Moshe Sofer.

I don't know anything beyond what the article says, but would be happy to
send the article to anyone interested.

Kollel Shomrei Hachomos traditionally served the Hungarian community.

have both entries in Hamburg and Ellis Island. The Goldsteins were Leviim. =

A Female's Paternity Line & DNA Testing #dna

CherylSimani <cherylsimani@...>

Could someone please answer this very complicated question?

After showing my neighbor your website and postings, she asked me to
post this question.

She is now in her sixties. When her parents ended their very stormy
marriage (many years ago), her mother told her that she was not her
father's child. She cannot say with certainty if this is true or if
her mother was just being spiteful. Both of her parents have passed
away, but this still hurts her. Is there any way she could settle
this via DNA testing?

Thanks,

Cheryl Simani

Gábor Hirsch <g_hirsch@...>

I didn't saw the movie, but read the book and to be quite honest I was not
too impressed, but it is a question of taste. What is wondering me, where do
you get the idea: "The writing perfectly captures the thoughts of a naive 15
year old and reflects on the meaning of life in a world in which the
Holocaust can occur." It is too much generalisation, may be at the beginning
we were not aware what we can expect, but after a few weeks you knew what
your fate might be, even as a 15 year old boy so can't stay too naiv if you
want to survive.

Best regards
Gabor Hirsch

I also saw the film and read the book both in English and Hungarian, and
I think it is a work of genius that fully deserved the Nobel Prize, and
the numerous other prizes it won prior to that. The writing perfectly
captures the thoughts of a naive 15 year old and reflects on the meaning
of life in a world in which the Holocaust can occur. Philosophically,
it is much deeper than the conventional stories and films that focus
on events rather than meanings.

You can get a sense of this >from Kertesz's very profound Nobel acceptance
lecture:
