Re: photographs of Lodz Headstones #lodz #poland

hi Ruth!

i had the experience in 2004 of showing up at the new cemetery expecting my
family (abersztajn) cemetery addresses to be there. they weren't (and
probably still aren't).

the polish cemetery caretakers spoke no english and told my polish
taxidriver (thankfully i hadn't let him go or i wdln't have known from
*nothing*!) where to go to get the records.

we got back in the taxi and drove (3 min drive) to the jewish community
centre.* thankfully symcha keller (the overworked head of the lodz jewish
community; chabad) happened to be there and he does have the records, an
archive of contemporary index cards with cemetery addresses. he stopped
everything and went to look. he was V helpful.

my family happened to be in his archive, he photocopied the cards, and off
we drove back to the cemetery.

brandishing the photocopies to the cemetery's (not unpleasant) polish
caretakers won't work. they aren't in the business of finding graves. that
task was for christoff, a hulking young pole (who seems to be a cemetery
employee) who does find addresses and speaks almost no english (does sp
german?). he was off helping some other folk. when he was free he grabbed
the photocopies and strode off with me following. he reads hebrew and knows
the cemetery v well. he found my stones (around 6 or 7 of them in various
parts) by locating the general area (grid system) and rummaging around in
the overgrowth looking for the hebrew. wld have been vvvv difficult or
impossible without him. he v. diffidently accepted a tip. it was a tricky
relationship to manage: try not to overload him with too many addresses:
he'll find them all but march you >from one end of the cemetery to the other
so you'll have to find the first ones all over again unless you make a very
good clear note to yourself where they were. i fed him a couple of addresses
on one session and a few more later.

We are *very* desirious of having someone photograph a few headstones,
specifically our immediate relatives. The 'addresses' will need to be
researched upon your arrival at the cemetery. Please contact:

Jewish Names - Birzai, Lithuania #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

I have come across the names of a number of Jews who lived in Birzai,
Lithuania, on Vilnius Street during the Holocaust. These were given to me
by some Lithuanian "Austra" high school students >from Birzai who are working
on a project about the Jews of their town.

I hope these are of interest to those of you who are researching your
families >from Birzai. Many of these names date back to the 1834 and later
records available for the shtetl in the All Lithuania Database. They also
can be found in the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF).

Securing Mother's maiden name and / or mother and father's place of birth - need assistance #general

Howie Axelrod <highwind1@...>

The Mother and father had 3 children - 1 son and 2 daughters. All born
in Europe. The lived in PA.

Both daughters had a SS#, and I have requested the original apps for
one. If this yields no info, I will request the app for the other.

One daughter's marriage lic yielded no info. I have not requested the
other, as it likely would yield same results.
Son never married/

Ellis island records do not help.

I suspect I have addressed all the obvious approaches.

Family entry to the US was approx 1905 - 1910 for all arrivals.

I am looking for any ideas on other possible approaches / documents
that I might try in the US.

Barbara's story reminded me of the single week in which I received death
certificates >from NY City and a town in Pennsylvania for my grandfather
and my husband's grandfather, respectively.

My grandfather's revealed that he died by jumping out the window of a TB
sanitorium and my husband's gf's revealed that he died of syphilis of
the brain.

No wonder no one wanted to tell me anything when I asked!

According to the Rivlin Genealogy "Sefer HaYachas leMishpachat Rivlin" that
was published in Jerusalem in 1940 there were then residing in Johannesburg
the brothers Rivlin
Dr. Yehuda Leib Rivlin and Dr. Israel Rivlin
The Rivlin family lived in Boisk and then Riga
Of Yehuda Leib (also known as Arye Leib) we know that he lived at some stage
in Kharkov (perhaps he qualified there?)
Of Israel we know that he studied in Frankfurt and then London.
In http://chrysalis.its.uct.ac.za/CGI/CGI_ROOTWEB.EXE the SA Jewish
Database
I found Leib Rivlin buried in Westpark and Dr Israel and Judith Rivlin
buried in Benoni.
I will be grateful to anyone who can provide more information on the
brothers and put me in touch with their families.

I want to use this opportunity to inform those who may be connected that
there is planned for 2009 in Jerusalem a gathering of the Rivlin tribe. In
the last gathering in 1980 there were over 2000 persons present.

Thanks,

Thank you all for your feed-back, I guess I over-reacted, several of you
told me of finding relatives through google.com, yahoo.com, up until a few
days ago Jewish-Genealogy was my only sourse for finding relatives.

Then! a long lost cousin in Toronto, estranged >from the rest of the family
saw *his* family name on google and wrote me. Coincidence? So much
information that no one knew but him!

Anyway, I did a complete search on google today, I copied and pasted the
sites that have my Home Page and/or Index of individuals to my Word. I last
submitted my Tree to the World Family Tree on February 18, 2002 so most
information was obscolete. The Index of individuals only showed names and
dates of deceased relatives, also notes of memories, and photos. No
birthdates of living individuals. I felt secure. Then going down the list,
entering family names, I found my MIL's family dated April 6, 2004, and
another had my Home page updated November 1, 2005. How did they do this?
I did not submit my Tree to World FTM. There anyone can look on my updated
Descendant Charts (PDF) with names, births, marriages, deaths and places of
the above.

My Tree on genealogy.com which I no longer belong to (they are now
ancestry.com with updated files) they just wanted someone to buy my records.
I also saw a "Net Detective: find out the truth about anyone!" site where
my name was, I found my JewishGen-erosity, I found some other Dorothy
(Kaplan) Harpers which are brilliant authors and origami enthusiasts, AND I
found my older son Michael's Home Page which informed me finally of what he
actually does since he does not tell his mother of his accomplishments. If
anyone wants to see my brilliant son I can send you his site.

So: I have accepted the fact that I am in the 21st century, on the
Information Highway, however I would still prefer to delete dates and photos
of living individuals. Particularly children. I have seen an option on FTM
which I shall investigate, I noticed others had Family Trees that were
Privatized through some program.

I will go to Yahoo tomorrow and see what they know about me. I am no longer
paranoid, I just don't understand how my Home Page was updated 2 days ago as
if by magic.

Sincerely, Dorothy Harper, researching: KAPLAN/METTER ,Litvaks >from the
