#GivingTuesday - Double Your Impact! #austria-czech

Avraham Groll

Dear JewishGen Community,

On #GivingTuesday, November 27, 2018, donations to JewishGen.org will
be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $15,000, thanks to generous
support >from E. Randol Schoenberg (well known to the JewishGen
community), and an anonymous supporter.

This means that if JewishGen can raise $15,000 on #GivingTuesday, we
will have effectively raised $30,000!

Please help us reach our goal so we can benefit >from our benefactor's
generosity!
Here is the link to easily donate: https://tinyurl.com/JewishGen1127
or https://jewishgen.app.thechesedfund.com/givingtuesday2018-5779

Your contributions of any amount will make a difference, and help us
continue to expand existing services, and develop new capabilities.

As we are less than a week before Chanukah, a time when we kindle
lights of hope, I thank you in advance for being a valued partner in
JewishGen's important mission, and for helping us achieve our ultimate
goal of "preserving our history for future generations."

We could not do this without you.

The terms nephew and uncle #austria-czech

rickglaser@...

Hello,

Was it customary for people to use the terms "uncle" and "Nephew" to refer to a first cousin
once removed?

My grandfather, Wilhelm Stein, identified himself as the nephew of Richard Stein, brother-in-
law of Henry Morgenthau, when he (Wilhelm) was seeking an affidavit >from Morgenthau.

In a second instance, Fred Stein wrote a letter of recommendation for his nephew, Hans Stein
(my uncle). In fact, Hans was the son of Wilhelm Stein, who was first cousin of Fred Stein.

In both cases, the first cousin once-removed, i.e., the first cousin of the father, identifies
imself as the uncle.

Was this just a matter of convenience, without the complications of explaining "once-removed"
or was this common usage.

Thanks

Dear Genners,
I have the SHORT form of the Birth Record of my cousin, Miriam ERLICHMAN,
born 7 Nov. 1936 in Lodz. There would be more detailed information on the
LONG form, but I have been unable to find a source in Poland that can help
me to find this document. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. You
may post your reply online, if the Moderator thinks it may be helpful to
other researchers. Thank you!

Become a Partner in JewishGen's Important Work! #austria-czech

Dear JewishGen Community,

In the past year, JewishGen has been extremely active. We added a
unified search interface to access more than 26 million records,
implemented a host of new web features, entered into a multitude of
important partnerships (including Beit Hatfutsot, and the Miriam
Weiner/Routes to Roots Foundation), and added more than 1 million
records to our collection.

And this is just the beginning!

We are currently focused on significantly expanding our content
acquisition, unveiling a brand new website and search experience, new
web tools, new online classes, and much more!

As you can see, we are working as hard as we possibly can - but we
need your help to continue and to grow!
Please click the following link to make a contribution, and become a
true partner in JewishGen's important work today. A gift of any amount
will make a real difference.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving (for those celebrating in the
USA), and a (early) Happy Chanukah!

Map translation from Hebrew #bessarabia

R Jaffer

I've posted a map for the town of Otaci in Hebrew for which I need a
translation. It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM70356

If you are able to help, please contact me privately and I will send
you the original map plus a map without text. You could either send me
the translation by writing on the blank map or through a text file,
whatever you prefer.
This is part of a translation project for Bessarabian town maps. You
may view those already completed in the map section of the Bessarabia
Sig website.

Thank you very much,

Re: Late Marriage #hungary

The problem here is the assumption that Jewish men married when they were 18 or
21, but this is no true. This may be the case for some ultra-orthodox
communities, but not a generality for Hungarian Jewish men or even women. I even
have people in my database >from Ujfeherto and the surrounding area who married
in their late 20s or 30s and just as people marry now at different ages for
various reasons, the same was true a hundred years ago.

Hmm... "how long they had to serve?" is an interesting question
regarding the forced labor battalions (realize that that's not your
specific query...). I would assume that they were worked to death. Then
again, I recall something about leave, I assume before the Arrow
Cross-German reverse invasion period...
