MANNES / BLUMENAU - Tukums. #latvia

Nigel Wilson <wilsonettes@...>

Dear Genners,

Searching for members of the following families:- MANNES and BLUMENAU –
originally >from Tukums – Latvia.

Bas Sheva (Batsheva) MANNES – husband’s name unknown - had 2 daughters,
Hilda born 1887 and Frieda – there may have been sons too – details unknown.

Hilda being a political activist in her teens, was sent to her family
PERLMAN (also >from Tukums) in New York – to be ‘calmed'. The Perlman family
descendants have no recollection of Hilda.

Hilda left New York after a few years for South Africa, joining her Uncle
Bernard BLUMENAU and family in Cape Town.

There she met and married in 1911 a Leopold KRUGER – originally >from Zagare
Lithuania. The couple moved to Pretoria and then settled in Johannesburg. In
1929 Hilda had her first child, a daughter Batsheva, and 16mths later
another daughter named Hilda Muriel. (Hilda senior died in childbirth, thus
the baby was named after her). In 1936 Leopold Kruger married a Celia Weiss
who unfortunately had an early demise. Leopold died in 1969 in Johannesburg.

In 1949 Batsheva married and went to live in Israel.

MANNES family – absolutely nothing is known if any members of the family
other than Hilda, left Tukums.

BLUMENAU family - Bernard was a well established businessman in Cape Town
by the time Hilda arrived in the early 1900’s – the Johannesburg BLUMENAU
family say they are not connected to the Cape Town BLUMENAUS – however since
both families originate >from Tukums and spell their surname exactly the
same, there has to be a common ancestor.

If anyone has knowledge of any descendants of the above, and know how the
families are connected, please contact me privately.

Thank you for your time.

Help in Philadelphia - Har Nebo cemetery #belarus

Bruce Rubenstein, M.D. <bruce.rubenstein@...>

I need some information >from a tombstone in Har Nebo cemetery in
Philadelphia. If there is anyone who is going there, I would greatly
appreciate either: 1) emailing me a digital photo of the tombstone,
or 2) relating to me all the information in Hebrew in English. I do
not require a digital photo per se, however I do need the inscribed
info in Hebrew so that if someone doesn't know Hebrew, a photo would
be great. I have the exact location of the grave within the cemetery.

If you can help me, please email me directly to

This young man, LEON FRANKS also appears as Father on a birth certificate

England (and fostered out to the PICKSTOCK family in Holmes Chapel)(Mother
on birth certificate is HELEN LUCRETIA THORNHILL). Both the census and
birth certificate state LEON FRANKS' employment as Traveler furniture and

I am searching for more information on mainly LEON FRANKS, where he was born
(as Franks is clearly not a Russian name) and when he came to England and
where he died and other children he may be the father of.

HAROLD THORNHILL FRANKS died abt February in 1958 near London in an

Call for papers "Juden in Ostpreussen" (Jews in East Prussia) conference #germany

Dr. Ruth Leiserowitz

Call for papers - >from Breslau via Gdansk to Koenigsberg
Living environments and remembrance of Jews in Silesia, East and West Prussia
A seminar of the "Juden in Ostpreussen" (Jews in East Prussia) association.
Verein zur Geschichte und Kultur e.V. (Society for History and Culture),
in cooperation with the Academia Baltica. e.V. Berlin, European Academy
31 August - 2 September 2007

The remembrance of the Jews in Silesia, East and West Prussia both
in the large communities and in small places and of their suppression and
destruction by the National Socialist regime seemed to be virtually lost
during the Cold War. In Poland, Lithuania and the Kaliningrad area, on
the other hand, the Jewish history of the formerly German provinces was seen
as a part of the German tradition. This explains why the descendants of the
Jewish inhabitants of Silesia, East and West Prussia, who today live
scattered over the whole world, can find only little new literature on
this topic when they are searching for the traces of their forefathers. [snip]

[For more details on the subject matter of this meeting please request
same via private email - address below. MODERATOR]

We would like to ask all interested contemporary witnesses, project
leaders and academics of various disciplines within the area of Jewish history
who would like to take part in this conference with a talk to send a thesis
proposal paper or a project sketch (1 page) and a CV (1/2 page) in

JRI-Poland Project Initiated to Index Galician Records from LDS Microfilms #galicia

Mark Halpern

A great debt of gratitude to Mark Jacobson, Renee Steinig, and
Gesher Galicia Research Coordinator, Pamela Weisberger for
announcing and detailing the availability of 33 rolls of microfilm
at the LDS Family History Library covering Jewish records filmed at
the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine branch in Lviv.
This very valuable collection covers records for some 60 Galician
towns, most of which are now located in Ukraine, and span years >from
1789 to 1942 (in some towns).

These records are complementary (not duplicative) of the records
for eastern Galician towns found at the AGAD Archive in Warsaw.
JRI-Poland has already indexed many of the Jewish vital records in
the AGAD collection.

We are very pleased to announce a new JRI-Poland Area Shtetl CO-OP
project to index this valuable collection of LDS microfilms. All
Shtetl CO-OP projects come under the leadership of JRI-Poland's
Associate Director and Shtetl CO-OP Coordinator, Hadassah Lipsius.
Hadassah now oversees more than 200 individual town Shtetl CO-OP
projects. This group of projects (towns with vital records filmed
at the Archive in Lviv, Ukraine) will be coordinated by Mark Halpern,
Shtetl CO-OP Area Coordinator for the East Galicia area. This is a
natural extension of Mark's work as AGAD Archive Coordinator. This
indexing project will be undertaken in cooperation with Gesher Galicia.

The Shtetl CO-OP concept is an outgrowth of the experiences of many
researchers, who found that extracting information only on their
families >from LDS films was a duplication of effort. Shtetl CO-OPs
emphasize the value of cooperative research and sharing amongst
groups of volunteers with a common interest in an ancestral town.

Galician researchers with an interest in any of these towns (see
list below) or those interested in coordinating the indexing of the
records for their town should contact either Mark Halpern at
willie46@comcast.net or Hadassah Lipsius at kesher@lipsiusgroup.com.
JRI-Poland will be contacting the LDS Family History Library to
facilitate the indexing of these records.

JRI-Poland Project -Missing Films #galicia

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>

Gesher Galicia is very excited about Mark Halpern's announcement of
the new JRI-Poland Area Shtetl CO-OP project to index the valuable
collection of LDS microfilms of Jewish records >from the L'viv archive.

For those of you who have viewed the entire list of these microfilms
on the FHL website and compared it to the inventory as detailed on
Miriam Weiner's website and on the Gesher Galicia website (composed
by Alex Dunai, entitled: Jewish Records in the Lviv Archive) you
should know that three record books, which should have been at these
archives, are currently missing or unavailable, and, therefore,
unfilmed. These are:

Kaminka Strumilova - Marriages - 1789-1861
L’viv - Marriages - 1835-1842
Khystynopol - Marraiges - 1933

"Missing" means that they could not be found during the LDS
microfilming process. It is possible that these are gone forever
(possibly stolen in light of the discovery of thefts at the archive
last year) or simply mis-filed or misplaced, and may eventually yet
be located. If anything more is learned about these particular books,
information will be posted on the list.

In the meantime, please consider volunteering for this important
indexing project by contacting Mark Halpern at willie46@comcast.net
or Hadassah Lipsius at kesher@lipsiusgroup.com.
