Palantine/Jewish history and "Black Dutch" URLs #general

I'd like to thank everyone for the responses and encouragement we've
received regarding the Silver/Silber line.

I've had quite a bit of success with some independent research the last
few days, but I've hit a snag. I'm trying to find credible online
resources that deal with the Jewish population of the Palantine region
of Germany pre-18th century. Most of what I've been able to find has
been a line or two at most, and most of the sites just seem to be
quoting each other. I would certainly appreciate it if someone could
suggest some good websites.

Also, if you know of resources that deals with the "Black Dutch." Again,
I'm finding the same information repeated on all of the websites I've
been able to find so far. I'm specifically looking for more scholarly
treatsies on the possible Sephardic Jewish connection.

Your help is most appreciated.

Genners,

Just to add, I have been making use of Binghamton University's collection of
the New York Times Index and its Personal Names Index. Not only do they have
1975-1996 and to 1999, as a supplement, but I have been having a ball with
the ones >from the late 19th century (I forget exact year) to 1974.

Perhaps I can help you on that, indirectly.
I have a good friend in Harare and perhaps he can send me the information.

I will try.

Resmaline Synagogue of former Akkerman #ukraine

Sturman Nathan <npsturman@...>

Does anybody have information on the former great Resmaline Synagogue of
Belgorod Dnestrovskiy (former Cetatia Alba, Akkerman etc)? An encyclopedia
article introduced it to me as having been founded as early as the 15th
century by Kairites. It was the place where, 1n 1941, the remaining Jews
from the city and surounding towns who could not escape to Odessa were
detained by the Nazis and Iron Guard without food for three days before
execution at the Liman.
That, and the fact that the Soviets had turned it into an archive during
the brief 1940-41 period of Sovietization in the months before the
invasion, are all I could find out.

A website for Odessa's Central Synagogue, the "Brody" synagogue, and the
Kosher Meat and Slaughterers Synagogue can be found at:

http://www.moria.farlep.net/vjodessa/en/synagogs.html

The site has illustrations of each synagogue and mentions the names of
personages associated with them.

The Brody synagogue was founded by merchants >from the town of Brody (not, as
some people think, by the Brodsky family). It was located on Pushkinskaya and
Pochtovaya streets. A HIAS member told me recently that a regional archive
now occupies the building. The Brody was less orthodox in the form of worship
and ritual than was the Central or Great (Glavnaia) synagogue on
Richelevskaya Street in which Sue Feder is interested.

Some information about both synagogues can also be Steven J. Zipperstein's
"The Jews of Odessa," and in Patricia Herlihy's "Odessa: A History 1794-1914."

Zipperstein's book also mentions a Mordecai Weinstein and his arrest over a
dispute about the proper schooling of Jewish youth. Of course, I can't say
whether he was related to the photographer Vaynshtayn.

Herlihy's book has a good photograph of the Main Synagogue.

A modern street map of Odessa can be found on the Internet at
http://www.odessa-ua.com/map-odessa.htm

An old map of Odessa, printed in cyrillic characters, and showing its streets
and main edifices can be found at:

http://www.odessaglobe.com/russian/tour/old-map.htm

Although the lettering on the old map is reasonably clear, I could not get
some of the text at this site to appear in any other form than in "?????" so
I can't say when the map was published.

Zuni MAUD #yiddish

I am researching my distant relative Zuni MAUD [= MOED], the artist and
co-founder of the first New York puppet theater "Modicut."

YIVO in New York has mailed me a few articles written in Yiddish (Hebrew
lettering). I'd like to find someone in Los Angeles who could help me
decipher them. I only look for biographical material right now: the name
of his parents and what shtetl they lived in. I know he immigrated to New
York in 1905.

I believe he ran until the 1940s a little hotel in the Catskill Mountains
called Maud's Summer-Ray. My parents stayed there one summer and I
visited them, >from New York City.

I shall welcome any recollections or "eitzes" (advice).

Dear All,
Rabbi Chaim AUERBACH wrote a sefer-book called Divrei
Mishpot in 1835.In the
introduction he says his mother,Yachad,is a descendent of
Rabbi Joseph KARO.
Does anyone know any connection >from nowadays upward until
then,and or a
connection from1835 and upwards?
Thank you in advance.

Dear Ravsig,
I have been researching the AUERBACH/ORBACH rabbinic dynasty
for some time and can offer some information. Rabbi Chaim
AUERBACH was a descendent of Joseph KARO through the
marriage
of his great grandfather, R. Shlomo Zalman, a Sephardi
mystic, to the KARO family, but I do not know how the
details of that descent. R. Shlomo Zalman's son was R.
Menachem AUERBACH who served in Poznan in 1750, and his
sons, in turn, were R. Yitzhak Itzik A. who served in
Lissa/Leszno and died 5 Tammuz, 1788, and R. Ze'ev AUERBACH
who was born around 1693 in Le(n)czyca and died in 1809. R.
Chaim AUERBACH was R. Yitzhak Itzik's son.

The introduction to Divrei Mishpat, which was written by his
son R. Menachem, does indeed indicate that his mother was
"Yachad" and that she is descended >from the Beit Yosef. I
assume the name is "Yachet", for he names a daughter
Yachet/Jachet. (She was born June 18, 1818, in Le(n)czycza
from his second wife, Machla.) R. Chaim's first wife was
Gitl, daughter of R. Moshe of Shwerentz (sp?). His second
wife was Machla Ickowna. His third wife was Golda
JAKUBOWICZ, daughter of R. Yehudah. So, it seems that there
are two connection to Yosef KARO both >from his great
grandfather's wife and his own.

I have much more to share with you if you contact me
privately with specific questions.

If you "don't appreciate [your email] address being available to people [you]

Varda Epstein recently inquired:

"..........tell me who is Shaul Benjamin in
relationship to the building of the Churva Synagogue. "

I'm not quite sure if the answer is for this list, but Shaul Benjamin
(Hacohen) (Karelitz)
was a rather controversial Rav in 19th C. Jerusalem. He arrived there
around 1857, and fell out with the Ashkenazi establishment and was
involved in a competitive attempt to acquire the Hurva site in the
early 1860s. If I remember rightly, he (or one of his party) promoted
a lottery for this purpose

There is much about him in memoirs of the period. A listing of
printed pamphlets attacking him and supporting him can be found in
Shoshana Halevi's excellent bibliography "Sifrei Yerushlaim
Horishonim" printed by Mechon Ben Zvi in 1978 (see Nos. 92 to 96).

There is also material in Frumkin's Toldos Chachmei Yerushlaim, part
3, page 272. Both these works should be available easily in Israeli
libraries.
