Genners,

Thanks to the advice >from recent posters (Rachelle Berliner & Maria Torres)
I decided to likewise think "out of the box" with regard to my elusive ggf,
Pinchas Mendelstein. First I tried "Mendel Pincus" with no success, then I
opted for something even more radical, "Mendel Shteen". I entered my data
"first name starts with M", "last name sounds like Shteen" using Steve
Morse's Jewish search page. I came up with 29 males arriving between
1900-1905. When I checked the manifest of Mendel Shtein, I discovered that
he was male, married, Russian, Hebrew, and a baker. The stated age didn't
fit, but I think the baker identification is pretty conclusive along with
the other corroborating data.

Could someone check the manifest and advise me as to the town of last
residence and his ultimate destination? London is listed on the passenger
record, but I made out "Bendzin" on the manifest. Notice that the next
passenger, Israel Rogenblat, was also listed as a baker, heading for the
same destination, and indicated London as his last residence.

Please reply to me privately. Thanks.

Dear Rav Siggers,

I found many interesting elements about my ancestors in Krakow
during the 17th century, in a book called "Divrie Chefetz" by
Wettstein. There is mention of a Rav Yehuda Leib of Olkusz (also
called Rav Leib HENDLES) and his two sons. The older one, Rabbi
Gavriel, became very notorious under the name of Rav Gavriel
ESHKELES, so did Rav Gavriel's son, Rav Issachar Berish ESHKELES.

The author mentions also the second son of Rav Yehuda Leib, Rabbi
Chaim as a "gaon " and a "maggid". I forgot to mention that his
father, R' Yehuda Leib HENDLES was the son of Rav Chaim of Konin,
who was the son of R'Sinai, who was the older brother of the MaHaRal
of Prag.

Does anyone know anything about this R'Chaim and his descendants?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks to all who replied about the Bukowina location. It's an area that
straddles Romania and the Ukraine. I got so many responses that it was

My father's maternal grandfather was born about 1850 in Tymbark, Limanowa,
Poland.
LDS says that it has Church records (B/M/D: 1786-1870). They don't have any
specifically
Jewish records.

A SEZAM search on Tymbark gives the following:
Archives #: 29, Fond: 77, Fond Name: Tymbark, Dates: 1749-1840

A SEZAM search on Limanowa gives the following:
Archives #: 29, Fond: 121, Fond Name: Limanowa , Dates: 1552-1757

Questions:

1) Why don't the LDS records show up in SEZAM?
2) Does it pay for me to order the 2 LDS films for Tymbard Church Records
or is it a waste of time?

Thanks in advance.

His wifes single name was Judith HARTE her Father was Arthur LEOPOLDHARTE

All the members of the family who could have helped are dead, and whenever
questions were asked over the years they were met with a wall of silence.
It is beleived that somewhere their forbears were Jewish hence the silence
it is assumed that they married out of the faith
the Paddingtons are eager to trace their lost family.
Any information please, at the moment I am the only contact.
