Re: Searching for Tolkiew #galicia

Hi Sonja,

That would be Zolkiew. About ten miles north of Lemberg.

While searching emigration records for the Herold Family I came
across Matel Herold >from Tolkiew, Austria in the manifest of the
ship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria noted to be sailing >from Hamburg on
the 22 of November, 1913. The name of the town was written 3 times
and in easily readable script so I am fairly sure of the spelling.
The Jewish Herold Family, as far as I know are >from the area of
Lemberg (L'vov) Galicia. I can find no city by that name anywhere.
I wonder if anyone has ever heard of it.
Thanks,

WAHL / KATZENELLENBOGEN --> SOFER/ SCHREIBER? #galicia

Dan Breslau <sinespam@...>

A story is told on the SCHREIBER side of my family that the family
name was originally WAHL or VOHL, but was changed by a distant
ancestor to SCHREIBER. My own SCHREIBER ancestors come >from
northeastern Hungary, particularly Sarospatak, but there have been
SCHREIBERs whose family came >from southern Poland and yet had the
same story, which suggests that they are related to us.

With the very kind assistance of some other jewishgen researchers,
I think I've found the history behind the key pieces of the story.
What I've found seems to connect my family to the WAHL /
KATZENELLENBOGEN family documented in "The Unbroken Chain," by Dr.
Neil Rosenstein.

There are still a few pieces that I'm trying to puzzle out. If
anyone reading this knows of a similar story (of a family name that
was originally WAHL or KATZENELLENBOGEN, but was changed to
SCHREIBER, or perhaps SOFER), I'd love to hear >from you. I'd
especially like to compare notes about when and why the name change
was made.

Re: Interesting facts about Naptha #galicia

Alexander Sharon

I am afraid that this is misunderstanding.

Nafta (naphta) dealers and distillers refer to the crude oil
merchants and oil refiners.

Main use of the refined product in the earlier stage has been
"kerosene" used in the oil lamp and oil heaters. Lately, another
product of the oil refining, known as "benzyna", has been used for
the automobiles.

On 2/4/07, Sonja Lessne asked the about where the town Tolkiew
could be found. Her question was regarding the origins of the
Herold family as they appear on the Ellis Island website.

The town is in fact Zolkiew (I believe it is called by the
Ukrainian name Zhovka today). It is not at all far >from Lvov, as
she writes, and is within the general area of Brody, >from where my
late father came, and also Sokal, which my father used to mention

Re: Interesting facts about naphtha #galicia

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Robin Meisner is researching the production and uses of Naphta as
her great grandparents' family in Rzeszow and Nowy Sacz, Galicia,
were Naphtha dealers and distillers.

I very recently [21 Jan 2007] wrote a piece for this SIG entitled:
"The Galician Oil Industry and the Kaiser's 1880 visit" which
should be relevant. I have just checked and it is already in the
archives and can be easily retrieved.

Many people do not realise that naphta/naphtha was already known
and traded in the 10th century in Baku [Azerbajian]; wells were dug
to get the Naft (or naphta, or crude petroleum) as described by
geographer Masudi in the 10th century and by Marco Polo in the 13th
century, who described the output of those wells as hundreds of
shiploads. Here are two references to this very early usage:

http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/199505/land.of.the.naphtha.fountain.htm
http://www.atmosphere.mpg.de/enid/Information_ss/Oil_consumption_504.html

This is hardly the stuff for the Galicia-SIG, but it is a matter of
considerable historic interest as the Rothschild Petroleum Company
[based in Vienna and Paris] first established itself in Baku, until
it was eventually taken over by Shell.

Undoubtedly, many Jews were involved in the trade throughout the
Habsburg Empire, which was a leading force in the development of the
modern petroleum industry - see for example the names of other
Galician napht{h}a distillers here:
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Zmigrod/zmigroddukla.htm

If you enter naphtha and naphta into the Jewishgen homepage
site-search field link, you get 15 hits in various shtetl links and
directories.

Distilling in many forms has always been a profession in which Jews
excelled!

Where should I start? #romania

Mona Irwin <irwin_9@...>

Hello,
I'm new on this discussion group and hope I'm posting this in the right
place. I'm trying to find some information on a man who lived in Molidorf,
Yugoslavia (also spelled Mollydorf, Molyfalva and Moline) in the Banat. I
know he was a landowner and owned a store in the village. He was married and
I think he had a daughter who died young. Unfortunately, I don't even have
his name.

I've checked the archives here but while I can find some posts related to
the Banat, I can't find anything on Molidorf. Is there somewhere else here I
should be checking? If not, perhaps someone can give me some ideas on where
else to look?

Thanks very much.

Re: CZ letter #austria-czech

Dick Plotz <Dick@...>

It can be very confusing when words and abbreviations have multiple
meanings, especially when some combination of wrong meanings seems to
fit so well.

Balboa is a part of Panama City that was formerly a separate city and
capital of the US-administered Canal Zone, abbreviated CZ. It has
nothing to do with Czechoslovakia at all.

As for the term "concentration camp", it originated with the British
during the Boer War, and simply meant a place where a certain category
of people were interned, in that case Boers who might have hindered
the British war effort. I'm not aware of any concentration camps in
the Canal Zone during World War II, but it wouldn't surprise me if
camps for aliens of uncertain loyalty, or for refugees, existed there.
The US had what were effectively concentration camps for Japanese in
the US proper, and there were also camps for refugees, notably in
upstate New York, that can be described as concentration camps. The
term is not exactly neutral, but it isn't restricted to living hells
like Auschwitz either.

Re: Balboa *refugee* camp [was Czech letter] #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Apologies to David Bernheim. I did not read his posting until I posted mine.
Of course, David is correct. Every stamp collector would know CZ=Canal Zone:
http://www.answers.com/topic/panama-canal-zone

This is an amusing example of a textbook error which will be perpetuated unless
we can manage to get the California Holocaust Museum entry to be altered on the
internet: http://www.hcnc.org/archives/archivescollect.html
[look for Landauer and/or Balboa]

So it all adds more credence to my posting about the location of this detention
camp - namely, Balboa, Panama, CZ.

Another example of a similar nature occurred just last week when I looked up a
Moravian family and found Zeravice [nr Bisenz/Bzenec, Moravia}] was
mysteriously indexed under *Ecuador* on the JGFF.

Apparently, all efforts, by our Sigger [ironically, a world expert on maps], to
change it have failed. So in the eyes of Jewishgen, Zeravice, remains
stubbornly and amusingly in Ecuador!

As for the the camp in Balboa - well, perhaps it did house some Czech refugees.
The National Archives, Kew should tell us more.
