I have answered Batya privately, but just for the greater genealogical
knowledge, Rodeph (not Rodesh) Shalom cemetery is Union Field Cemetery in
Ridgewood, Queens, NY. Union Field is owned and operated by Congregation
Rodeph Shalom of Manhattan and serves as the burial ground for that Reform
Jewish congregation, but there are approximately 60 other burial societies
in Union Field Cemetery that are not connected with the synagogue.

For directions on how to get to Union Field Cemetery by public
transportation, please go to http://www.jgsny2006.org/cemetery.cfm on the
NY Conference website.

KOHEN surnames-an anecdote #general

yoni ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

Several years ago I entered my (former) family name KATZOFF in the machines
that give you the origins of family names. The answer it printed out was
that the name was a variant of KATZ, and like other names (which it listed)
refered to a Kohen. It added that one of the prominent KATZOFFs in Israel
is Prof. Ranon KATZOFF of Bar-Ilan Unv.

The next time I visited my brother I told him I knew he was a prominent
Katzoff but I was very angry that he never told me he was a Kohen. He
didn't think the story was funny and he went to the museum to have the
information changed (at that time he told me he was unsuccessful in having
it changed).

Out of curiosity, could anyone with access to the diaspora Museum in T.A.
tell me if the information as to our family name was actually changed?

I'm sure that someone wrote (I think I did in the distant past) that there
are cases of specifically Kohanic names, such as KATZ and COHEN, that the
individuals are not Kohanim.

May we here only good tidings in these difficult times for Israel and a
public Thank You to all who sent me letters of concern for our situation
here.

Extracts of Vital Records of Jewish entries from the Civil Registers #general

Hadassah Lipsius <kesher@...>

The next update to the JRI-Poland database will include extracts of Jewish
entries >from the Civil Registrations for the former West Prussian towns of
Tuchel and Zempelburg (today Tuchola and Sepolno Krajenskie). Tuchola is
located at 53o35', 17o51' and Sepolno Krajenskie is located at 53o27',
17o31'. The two towns are South West of Gdansk and North of Bydgoszcz.

These entries were prepared by the JRI-Poland Shtetl CO-OP program under the
leadership of the Monica Leonards, Z"L. In the spirit of cooperative
research that is the hallmark of the JRI-Poland project, Monica, before her
untimely passing, worked quietly and diligently to prepare the entries for
these two Prussian towns. When she knew that her illness was terminal,
Monica made sure to complete the extractions and submitted the completed the
files for addition to our database. Monica expressed to me that she did
not want to waste all the work that she put into to creating the extracts.
Monica was selfless in her desire to share her work with other researchers
without fanfare and glory.

Monica's work is one example of projects undertaken by JRI-Poland
www.jri-poland.org since 1998 to index both the Jewish records and the
mixed Prussian civil records (Standesamt) LDS microfilm collection of the
LDS. JRI-Poland also has indexed records of Prussian towns not microfilmed by
the LDS found at the PSA Branch archives located in Poznan, Torun, Olsztyn
and Bydgoszcz.

May Monica Leonards' family be proud of her efforts and may her
selflessness be an example to all of us.

Inaccuracy of an obituary #unitedkingdom

HPOLLINS@...

The obituary of Bernard Harris, of LIverpoool, in the JC 17 September 1937
stated that he established the Wrexhan Hebrew Congregation and was its
president for a number of years. The first mention of religious services in that
town (which was the first Jewish community in North Wales) was in September
1892. I followed through the reports in the JC until 1914. I could find no
mention of Bernard Harris in that period. I suppose he might have been elected
president after 1914 but I have no idea why he should have been credited with
founding the congregation or how it came to be claimed in the obituary.

Weinberg surname list + Hebrew indexers needed #germany #poland #danzig #gdansk

Logan J. Kleinwaks

Dear Danzig researchers,

Indexing of the German part of the German and Hebrew Weinberg burial
register 1847-1883 on FHL microfilm 1184407 is complete, and we now need
indexers who can read Hebrew cursive to finish indexing this register, so
the data can be placed online. If you might like to volunteer, please
contact me for further details and see
http://www.jewishgen.org/danzig/project4.php for general information about
our FHL microfilm indexing project.

Below are surnames appearing in this register. If you see a surname you are
researching, but cannot read Hebrew cursive, please consider whether you can
help index another of the Weinberg registers -- births 1839-1847 or
marriages 1837-1845 -- which are entirely in German.
