Help pls. 1940 NY Brooklyn directory look-up. #general

Nigel Wilson <wilsonettes@...>

Dear Genners,

Does anyone have access to a NY - Brooklyn - directory around 1940? I don't
know how often they were published.

I have the name and address of someone I need to obtain information about
before I ask you, kind friends, about a certain family I am looking for.

Please write to me privately if you can help.

Thank you so much.

I do not know what
added value there is in looking at
records as you can usually group families by
parents and children for free.
Actual records (one gets a whole page of the manifest - anything up to
50 passengers) give additional information on class of ticket, others
(not necessarily family) travelling on the same ticket, marital
status, occupation, date (day, month, year) of departure, and possibly
size of ship, previous country of permanent residence, intended
country of permanent residence, whether British or not, port at which
passenger has contracted to land.

In 7 manifests, I have come across one error in occupation and 3
errors of location of origin within the British Isles. One of the
errors in location was likely to have been clerical error - the other
2 and that in occupation may well have been the passengers giving no-
explanation-needed answers.

Sometimes if passengers did not travel, their names were struck out -
sometimes not. (I have one case of the latter, where I happen to know
that the mother and young children did not sail because the 2-year-old
was considered by the port or ship officials as too sick to travel.
They reappear on a manifest two weeks later.)

Rabbi of Plonsk #rabbinic

Ana <ananuta@...>

Dear Genners:

I need the name of the Rabbi of Plonsk. My parents were >from Plonsk.
My grandparents and gg´parents, all the family, perished in the
Shoah.

Acording to Shtetl Finder by Chester G. Cohen, prior to 1942,
the Rabbi of Plonsk was R' Zvi Yechezkel Michelson.

But according to Pinkas HaKehilot Polin (Yad Vashem Edition),
R' Michelson was the Rabbi of Plonsk until 1922. After 1922 the
Rabbi was Yisrael Bornstein.

This contradiction creates doubts in my mind, and I must ask you if
you know who the Rabbi of Plonsk was between 1910 and 1922. I have a
book with a picture under which my father, Meier Nuta, wrote:
"This was the Rebbe of my shteitele Plonsk," without giving any
name. Perhaps he couldn't remember.

I have uploaded the photograph to viewmate. It is found at
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=10161

Please take a look at it and write to me if you recognize the Rabbi
of Plonsk or if you can help me learn his name.

Thanks in advance.
Shalom
Chana Rachel Nuta

Hello

I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in my family
history research project in May. The replies were fascinating and gave me
lots of insights.

I know that some members were keen to see the findings. A magazine
(in the UK) published an article which outlined some of the results - this
was quite 'topline', and focused on family historians of all faiths (so it
is not terribly indepth about the specific motivations of Jewish
researchers). Unfortunately, due to PC problems, I no longer have
members' email addresses - so if you would like me to email you the article,
please do drop me an email.

Many thanks again to all contributors,
