Ship's manifests are notoriously incorrect in terms of
spelling. My grandmother, Sara, was listed as Sure,
since that was a phonetic spelling of Sara, as she
would have pronounced it. It's possible that the
person
writing the manifest could have even written another
name that was close to the actual one due to lack
of understanding of the Russian alphabet
used in the immigrant's documents.

There are many people in your area (Los Angeles) and
around the world who are named Bracha. It has been a
popular Jewish name. It comes >from the Hebrew word
for blessing. My aunt Bracha's name was spelled Braka
on her ship's Manifest.
Hope this helps,

My Grandfather's sister-in-law came over on a ship
from Odessa (via
England) in 1912.
Her name was Rebecca, but the ship manifest listed
her as Broche. I've
seen
this name for other passengers. Does anyone know
what it means?
Thanks,

Hello,

I have found that there are many KRAINES family members >from Slutsk. Could
it be possible that the KARAN family shortened their name >from the KRAINES
name? KRAINES means crown and they were Cohanim >from what I was told.

Good luck on your search.

The discussion of various Belarus-related surnames prompts me to ask for suggestions about one that has puzzled me for a long time.

My maternal grandmother came to the U.S.A. in 1902 >from Wisoke-Litovsk (now Vysokoye) in the Brest District, Grodno Gubernia.

Her father died when she was only three years old and her mother remarried. She used her step-father's name (VILNER/WILLNER) as her maiden name. But when she died in NY in 1934, my uncle gave the authorities the name PETRUSKITZ as her father's name for the death certificate.

I have not been able to find any example of that name. I have found similar-sounding names such as PETRUSKA and PODRITSKI in census records, ships manifests, etc.

I'm sure my uncle did his best to recall and spell a name he had only heard mentioned many years earlier.

Would anyone be willing to venture a guess as to what name I should be looking for?

BERKOWITZ Notary living in Paris 1891 #france

Rivka Schirman <capitetes@...>

Rue de Rochechouart used to be almost exclusively jewish (as the
majority of the 9 district of Paris) before the war. Now it is mainly
North African, as the name of the restaurant indicates. I could find
no such restaurant in the phone book in this address, and even if I
did, I doubt very much the owners would have known anything.

That said, the medals and band you mention may very well reveal
something. If he was granted French decorations - military or civil
- he'd be listed. As for the indications on the back of the photo -
are you sure the address and date on the back of it do not refer to
the photographer rather than to your relative ?

Anyway, what I suggest that you scan the photo (front and back) and
that you also take a "close-up" of the medals and upload it to
viewmate. I am sure I'll not be the only one to have a look so, all
in all, among al the suggestions you'll get, maybe you'll make a step
further :-)

Pictures of Jewish Lviv.

Having visited Lviv last year I can recognize several photos.
Pictures #1 and #2 are of a pre-World War II synagogue which is now
a Chabad synagogue and Jewish Community center. Note the blue paint
splatter and the broken windows resulting >from vandalism.

The domed building in photos #6 and #7 is the former Jewish Hospital.
It is still used as a hospital. Photo #15 (next to last) is the site
of a destroyed synagogue. The last photo (#16) is a former synagogue
which was converted into a gymnasium by the Russian government after
WWII. It is now unused but may be returned to the Jewish community.
