Re: Moses BENJAMINSOHN from Goldingen/Libau #courland #latvia

There is a resource that Eric Benjaminson can utilize to perhaps
locate his great grandfather Moses Benjaminson which I had previously
posted about. It is the 1916 Libau Calendar which provides the names
of property owners:

http://archive.org/stream/LibauCalenderForTheYear1916-PropertyList/Liepaja1916PropertyLst#page/n0/mode/2up
[or http://tinyurl.com/Libau1916 --Mod.]

Unfortunately, it is organized by street and not alphabetically by
owner's name. In that case, you would have to look through the entire
list unless you knew a property address.

You can also look at other people's family trees on Ancestry.com . . .
there is one that states Moses Benjaminson died in 1888.

There is also an arrival record in Quebec for a Benjaminson family in
1901 and one of their children is Moses who is one year old.

Good luck!

Kremenets: 16,925 vital records are online #ukraine

Dear Friends and Associates of Kremenets,

After 12 years of work, I'm pleased to announce that 16,925 birth,
marriage, divorce and death records for Kremenets and several nearby
towns are searchable on the JRI-Poland website. Go to
http://www.jri-poland.org/ and click on "Search / Database" the left
side of the page. Then, just fill out the search form. Here is a list of
the records that have been posted:

* Kremenets (>from LDS microfilms):
10,824 Births: 1870-1886,1888-1906
320 Marriages:1899-1902 & 1904
15 Divorces: 1903 & 1904
5,736 Deaths: 1870-1878, 1880-1897, 1900-1902, and 1904-1907
* Belozerka (>from Central Archives)
30 Births: 1905
* Katerinovka (>from Central Archives)
763 Births: 1885, 1887-1895, 1900-1904, 1907-1911, 1913-1916,
1920, 1922-1931, 1937-1938
* Oleksinets (>from Central Archives)
240 Births: 1878-1883, 1892, 1896-1898, 1900-1901, 1903-1904,
1906, 1910, 1913
* Velikiye Berezhtsy (>from Central Archives)
299 Births: 1878-1887, 1889-1895, 1900-1901, 1904-1905,
1907-1908, 1912-1913
* Vyshgorodok (>from Central Archives)
825 Births: 1878-1889. 1895-1900

A couple of days ago I sent a message to our Kremenets distribution list
announcing the availability of the Kremenets birth records. If you
missed that message, you can download the Births spreadsheet >from the
Kremenets Town Page on the Ukraine SIG Website:

http://www.jewishgen.org/ukraine/RES_collection.asp?id=741

The spreadsheet is in Excel 2007-2010 format (xlsx extension). /If you
have an earlier version of Excel you will need the free compatibility
pack that Microsoft makes available on their website
<http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3>)/.

Don't forget to search the Kremenets One-Step Concordance. It is a
master index to all the records we have translated to date. It is
available on the Kremenets KehilaLinks website at:
http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/Kremenets/web-pages/master-surnames.html

We couldn't have done this without the generous donations of 83 of our
Kremenetsers worldwide. (That's 18% of our membership.) They contributed
the money that paid for these translations and made these records freely
available to you. All of us owe our contributors a huge Thank You.

And, there is much more to come. We have received another 11,000 pages
of records (both vital records and family lists on DVDs) >from the
Central Archives. These contain another 25,000 to 35,000 records. They
are in the translation queue. In a message later this week I'll describe
these new records. Keep tuned.

Am I interpreting search results of Jewish Gen Communities Database correctly? #general

Mark Miller <markallan.miller@...>

My Mother was Polish and >from a town named Rutki and I am trying to
determine exactly which 'Rutki' she was >from because there are multiple
Rutki's in Poland. I did a search of the Jewish Communities Database for
'Rutki' with the added criteria that it was in Poland during the
inter-war years with the exact spelling of R-U-T-K-I. Search results
highlight one town currently in Poland with this name. However, it also
says that "There are a dozen places in Poland named 'Rutki' and the one
shown is 16 miles ESE of Lomza and 7 miles SSE of Wizna."

My Question: Why weren't the other 11 Rutki's listed as well? May I
safely assume that none of the other 11 Polish places named 'Rutki' were
listed because they did not have Jewish communities or it is not
currently known whether they had Jewish communities?

Thank you so very much.

I happened upon a death notice in the American Jewish Year Book and an obit in
"The Advocate: America's Jewish Journal", Volume 42, regarding one of the
oldest rabbis I have ever heard of.

His name was Rabbi Isaac Reich, who died on August 11, 1911, in Szamos, Hungary,
at the age of 117. He died after a brief illness and was a celebrated "wonder"
rabbi who was consulted by people throughout Hungary. Amazingly, he was also
married four times. His last wife died in 1909 at the age of 93.
