"Neve Shalom" in Surinam vs "Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel", Recife #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Following my posting on the Surinam synagogue, which claims to be the oldest in
the Western Hemisphere, genner Eliana Aizim in Rio de Janiero, Brazil wrote to
me to say [and I have her permission to quote] that it is generally
acknowledged that the Recife, Brazil synagogue is the oldest in the Western
hemisphere. She kindly sent me pictures of this building.

I replied as follows: "I really would not know which is the oldest - Surinam vs
Brazil - I was just reporting what it said in the article.

I suspect that they may have been contemporary - but also remember that the
Paramaribo synagogue may have been a primitive building at first which the
Recife people may not have considered a proper synagogue - perhaps it all boils
down to the legal formation of the community and "consecration" of a building -
if that is the right word - ie when is a synagogue not a synagogue.

But that is not my department - I will ask a legal expert who might know and
send copies to other friends, including some Brazilians who may be interested.
Also it might depend on whether there are clear written records with dates and
deeds for the building."

That is the background to Judith Romney Wegner's clear response: "When is a
synagogue not a synagogue."

As to which is the oldest: the jury is still out, but luckily I am not on it.

Hashomer Hatzair Activity in Slovakia-Photos of Zionist Training in Mukachevo (Monkac) in the 30s #hungary

Shaul Sharoni <pollinia@...>

Dear Genners,

I have recently scanned an album stashed away for 70 years, presenting
photos of Zionist training groups and camps in the early 30s, in and around
Mukachevo, then part of Transcarpathian Czechoslovakia and today in the
Ukraine. The album belonged to my late grandmother, Jardena Winter nee
Grunwald born in a small village in eastern Slovakia near Levoca, and was a
Zionist and Hashomer movement activist in Slovakia, later on becoming
Hashomer Hatzair. She attended an international conference in Vrutky,
Slovakia, where Hashomer Hatzair in Slovakia was established, and later on
left her home to Mukachevo, where she spent about 4 years as part of her
training. In 1936 she immigrated to then Palestine.

Anyone researching this topic or interested in viewing these old photos,
please contact me in private.

Best Regards,
Shaul Sharoni,
Israel

- Fuzesabony

With the exception of Fuzesabony, no one is listed in the JGFF
as interested in these towns. Fuzesabony has one person listed.

The records for these towns were obtained because they were on
the same LDS microfilm as the records for much larger towns.

If anyone would be interested in transcribing these records for
inclusion in the JewishGen All-Hungarian database, please
contact me off-line. If no one expresses any interest,
these towns will not be transcribed and will not be part of
the AHD, due to a lack of interest.

If you would like more information about what is involved in
transcribing records for inclusion in the AHD, please see:

Hungary SIG #Hungary Hashomer Hatzair Activity in Slovakia-Photos of Zionist Training in Mukachevo (Monkac) in the 30s #hungary

Best Regards,
Shaul Sharoni,
Israel
