My great grandmother came to this country in 1883 on the SS
Nebraska, which departed Glasgow, Scotland and stopped in Larne,
Ireland. The registry says she's >from Austria, but I'm sure she
came >from Galicia. Does anyone know how to determine the details
of how she got >from mainland Europe to Scotland?

SCHNEEBAUMS from Jaroslaw #galicia

Avraham Kahana <435.gavea@...>

I'm researching on behalf of a friend SCHNEEBAUMS >from Jaroslaw.
Please check the names below to see if any rings a bell. If so,
please let me know and I'll put you in contact with the person.
Here's the info I have:

Yehuda Julius Schneebaum z"l, probably born around 1870 - not sure
if in Jaroslaw and deceased in 1942, was married to Saela z"l (not
accurate spellings, took >from Hebrew). They had 3 children, as
follows:

- Yossef Schneebaum z"l, born in Jaroslaw, 1894 (deceased in 1970)
- Mauritzious Schneebaum z"l, born in Jaroslaw, 1898
- Amalia Regina Schneebaum z"l, born in Jaroslaw, 1905

Saela was, however, Yehuda's 2nd spouse. He was previously married
to Zosha z"l and the couple had a son named Vilec Schneebaum z"l.

Moving on a generation, looking at Yehuda's son, Yossef - he
married to Valtraud Mertal z"l, and had the following children:
- Yaron Schneebaum, born in Israel
- Dani Yehuda Schneebaum, born in Israel

Yaron married Leah Levy giving birth to my friend Moria Schneebaum,
who lives in Israel.

If any of the above mean anything to you, please reply back.

Have a special look at the Russe (Rustchuk)<Bulgaria> weddings DB , as Russe

I am working on two files dealing with Venna Turkish Community- birth

Identification of Shtetl in Kiev Province #general

Carthay@...

Hi,

I am trying to identify and obtain any information on shtetl located in the
Kiev province that my Zelikow relatives came from.

These are the clues I have:

1. Located near Kiev

2. Located on the Dniper River

3. Probably village near a town named Gordoistsche, Gordiszcze, Hordicht (of
which I am aware there are many)

4. Was apparently destroyed/floods when one of the reserviors on the Dniper
was created sometimes after the 1930s

5. Spellings found in records:

Derenkiwete, Derenkiev, Derenkiwete, Berenkovic, Derenkewice, Derenkewcz

If any of this sounds familiar or you have an old map upon which you can
located this shtetl, I would be more grateful.

I am at a loss with the above great aunt. She was born in Mihaileni, Romania
around 1891 and came here August 1904 and went to her brother Phillips
house. We have found no indication of marriage, naturalization, or death
certificates. There is a family picture taken around 1918 and she is not in it.
Can anyone help?

Seeking HASKEWITZ/CHAZKEWITZ relative in Dallas area #general

M. Ronn

Hello JewishGeners:

About a year and a half ago, someone (somehow the name Barry and Levine ring bells)
living in the Dallas area contacted me regarding my CHAZEKEWITZtree posted on the
FTJP. His first cousin was a descendant of a Chazkewitz relatived who moved from
Russia to Tennessee upon arrival in America in the early 1900s, where he died
early. He went by the name Haskel or Haskewitz, or something like that. At least
one daughter moved to Chicago (where I think Barry(?) was also from) and perhaps
married someone named Posner. She had a son also living in the Dallas area.

Unfortunately, my computer crashed shortly after corresponding with them and I
lost their contact information. I am eager to resume contact as I have some
important new information I would like to share.

I would appreciate any leads.

Please respond privately.

Thank you,

Book Cite: Ghetto Lodz #general

Fritz Neubauer

On December 3, the German daily "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung"
printed the book review by Michael Wildt of the book

"Die Verfolgung und Vernichtung der Juden im Reichsgau Wartheland
1939-1945" (The persecution und annihilation of the Jews in the German
state Wartheland between 1939-1945) by Michael Alberti, published by
Harrassowitz publishers in Wiesbaden in 2006. 576 pages. Price 48 Euro.
ISBN 978-3-447-05167-5.

The review in German is accessible through the address

http://www.faz.net/s/RubA330E54C3C12410780B68403A11F948B/Doc~EA06E2175BD9440E2BCF6E8FBAD7BDF27~ATpl~Ecommon~Scontent.html

The author has worked extensively with all the documents in the archives
in Germany, Poland and Israel with the result that the history of the
Ghetto Lodz and all the developments until it was dissolved in 1944 are
traced in hundreds of sources, particularly the dealings between the
head of the Jewish administration Rumkowski, the German Ghetto Leader
Biebow and the state governor Greiser. The book describes that the
ghetto's economy became the greatest of its kind in German occupied
Europe and that not only the army but also numerous private companies
(and administrators) made an enormous profit out of the exploitation of
the Jewish ghetto prisoners, while the Jews in the Ghetto died of
hunger, illness or because of mistreatment or shootings by the German
supervisory authorities. Some of the findings suggest that the practices
of mass murders, particularly in Chelmno was exclusively in the hands of
the local state administration of the State of Warthegau in cooperation
with Himmler. Another finding is that the last round of murders in the
reactivated Chelmno camp and the deportations of the remaining prisoners
to Auschwitz in June and July 1944 -- against Speer's objections -- was
mainly motivated by the fear that the Lodz Ghetto could turn into
another Warsaw uprising.

The book contains an extensive list of archival documents, a
bibliography as well as a place and name index. There is also an English
and Polish summary. The English summary and the German text of the
review (in case the direct access does not work) is available on request
from me.
With kind regards

Fritz Neubauer, North Germany
