For those of you interested in the surname STEINHARDT in its different
spellings, I am pleased to announce that I have added today to my site a
new page about the STEINHARDT's of Flonheim (Germany)
my STEINHAR(D)Ts originate >from Steinhart, Bavaria but my ancestor went to
live as a great rabbi in Alsace, then in Fuerth, Bav.
So I do not think we are related, or are we ? I do not know Flonheim.

It was written in French... Raphael’s birth record confirms that French
was the language of Flonheim when Samuel and Gertrude Steinhardt lived there
at the beginning of this family branch (...) in the year 1814,
Emperor Napoleon I created those French departments in Germany and imposed
French law there, which was very good for the Jews, till his fall in 1815
when the German reaction prevailed against them.

so no surprise if the documents are written in French.

best regards to you, even if we are not cousins...

Interesting website on philatelic resources #romania

Susanna Vendel <svendel@...>

I came accross a very interesting website on Judaica philatelic resources.
The website is divided in 2: one about the Synagogues in different
countries and one
about the Holocaust.
There are some pictures of romanian synagogues.

The part treating the Holocaust contains many post-cards >from different
concentration camps
and ghettos. The view of the cards can be enlarged so one can easily read
the content and see the
names.

I am looking for information re the shtetl of Smolyany ,lat 54N,long 30 E ,
uzed:Orsha in the Mogilev Gubernia.
My grandparents,Lubavicher Rabbi Zorach Hurwitz(Gurwitz) and his wife
Chassia(Rabinovich)lived in this shtetl toward the end of the 19th
centuryand early 20th century with their 6 children Nathan,Goldie,Sarah,
Simon, and twins Solomon and Max.My greatgrandmother Rabinovich and her
married daughter(unknown) also lived in Smolyany and remained behind when my
grandparents and family emmigrated to America in 1905-1906.The family
settled in Worcester,Mass. where my grandfather was Rabbi of the Sons of
Jacob synogogue until1944.
There seems to be little information available about Smolyany .I am unable
to find any Yizkor book listed in its name.In my search I have found some
information >from the 1897 census listing a jewish population of 1,704 of a
total of 2,278 inhabitants .A fairly small number of families are listed
along with my posting in the Family Finder registry. Thus far there have
been no significant connections. I am caught in a mystery. Was this an
isolated community? Were centers of learning in the Lubavitcher tradition
nearby?
So many of you are so well informed. I would appreciate any information you
could send to me.

Gratefully,

Kraselnick Search #belarus

Raeus Cannon <raeus@...>

I am searching for KRASELNICK/KRASILNIK (and various other spellings) from
Grodno. My gg grandmother arrived in the US in 1896...my gg grandfather
arriving approximately 3 years prior to that. I have found an amazing amount
of information about them in the US, however, I am not having any success in
finding anything in their home country (Belarus).
Can anyone give me some hints on what/where to look for information >from the
mid 1800's. It seems everything I've found on KRASELNICK/KRASILNIK is after
my family arrived in the US.
On my gg grandmother's passenger record it is written that she reported her
home town as "Lunik" but I have been unable to find any town that fits that.
(Lunna seems to be the best, but have found no records of family there as of
yet.)
I would specifically like to find marriage records, birth records (for the 4
sons that traveled with my gg grandmother) >from the old country.
There is a family story that says that my gg grandfather was jailed just
prior to leaving for the US because his older brother escaped conscription
in the army. Are there records that might back up this story?

Thank you in advance for your help.

EINHORN naturalization papers #general

Wendygriswold <wendygriswold@...>

Dear Genners,

This would be funny if it weren't so pathetic. Unfortunately, it's the
truth.

Homeland Security has sent me about 5 sets (or partial sets) of
naturalization documents in response to my FOIA request for paperwork on my
great-aunt, Rose/Ruchel Einhorn. None is the Rose/Ruchel EINHORN I
requested. (Yep, I gave them all the correct information, they ignored it.)

Similarly with my great-uncle, Samuel/Sam EINHORN. I have paperwork on 3 or
4 people by the same name who are not my great-uncle (but they did find my
great-uncle, too!).

So if anyone out there happens to be looking for paperwork on Rose/Ruchel or
Sam/Samuel EINHORN, please contact me privately. I may have the papers
you're looking for - or better yet, we might be connected.

SCHECHTERS of Vienna - try the BohMor SIG #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Yoni Ben-Ari, Efrat, Israel writes about his SCHECHTER family >from Skalat
and Starokonstantin.
His great-grandfather, Yacov Gedalia SCHECHTER, .... came to Jerusalem in
the second half of the 19th cent. Yoni keeps a registry of all his descendants.
He had brothers and uncles who emigrated to Vienna and the USA. "We know some
first names but nothing more about their wanderings.
Does this sparse information sound familiar to anyone?"

Well Yoni; the Jewish-gen SIG which deals with Vienna and Austria is called
Bohemia-Moravia [BohMor] and you would have a far better chance of finding your
family links in Vienna if you joined this group.

BohMor, as the name implies, also deals with the one-time Habsburg Crown
Lands of Bohemia and Moravia, where many of the Austrian Jews originated.
There are also many links with Galicia in the various BohMor databases. Under
the Habsburgs, Vienna, with a population of about 200,000 Jews, was the centre
of a huge Empire, making it one of the most important Jewish cities in the whole
world. The Vienna Jewish cemetery database is one of the most important [if
not the largest] Jewish cemetery databases on the internet.

The BohMor website and SIG has, in fact, a much broader coverage than its
name suggests.

http://www.jewishgen.org/bohmor/

I do not promise, but it is worth a try.

Yiddish name Shayva #general

Can anyone please validate the name Shayva or Sheva (pronounced shave-a as
in "with a razor")? Maybe my transliteration isn't right. I have a friend in
Buffalo NY who is saying a misheberach every week for my niece to get well.
The Cantor at her shul insists there is no such name, and to do a
misheberach they need her mother's name. My sister was named for my mother's

Any help on this would be appreciated.
