Maps showing ethnic communities in 1920 New York City #general

Walter Greenspan

NY Times has an article, with maps, about where the various ethnic
communities were in 1920 New York City.

For those who may be experiencing difficulty in navigating and reading the
two maps that are included in the New York Times article, I have extracted
the URLs for these maps.

After accessing the maps via these URLs, if you click on the maps, you will
then get a larger version of that map.

Re: Origin of Polish names #general

AUBREY JACOBUS <aajacobus@...>

Surname registration in Europe was compulsory only after 1811 - in Poland
not greatly observed until later.

RYSZFELD is unusual but and one needs the place of birth not burial - and
pre 1800 the surname may not have existed. The death certificate may give
clues if you are lucky. Early Polish research is often confusing.

single male child. Then I would expect his brothers to bear the same
newly adopted surname. Obviously, I may be missing some critical data.
But also, could it be that different brothers adopted completely different
surnames? Thank you for your insight.

Re: Entry to the U.K. my brother GERHARD SALINGER #general

Naidia Woolf <rnwoolf@...>

Ralph -

You said that your brother entered the UK before the outbreak of war
(in 1939). You didn't say, however, whether he remained in England or left
for another country. (I see that you live in Israel.)

Check the UK alien registration records to see if your brother was
registered as an "enemy alien." (During both world wars all resident aliens
in Britain had to register with the police, those deemed medium or high
security were interned.)

Obtaining the record (if it existed) could be very worth-while. I obtained
a copy of a possible (distant) relative of mine named Sarah SAPERSTEIN who
arrived in England in 1939. It gave a lot of valuable information about
her, including Surname, Forenames, Date and place of birth, Nationality
(in her case given as "Stateless"), Police Registration Cert. No., Address
(in the UK), Normal occupation (how she used to be employed), Present
Occupation, Name & Address of Employer, Decision of Tribunal - her case "Not
to be interned," and date [of the Tribunal's Decision), 2/12/39. Item #11
asks if the "alien" "desires to be repatriated (Yes or No): her answer was
(of course!) "No."

If you plan to visit the UK, go to the National Archives (formerly known as
the Public Record Office) at Kew (outside London) and look for the link for
Exemption >from Internment - Refugees. Or do a search online under your
brother's name then send a formal inquiry by letter or email.

Copies are costly but - in my opinion - worth it if there's a real "need to
know."

Good luck with your research.

It appears to me that no Jewish records survived for Klishkivtsi, formerly
Cliscauti, Hotin, Basarabia, Romania and prior to that Klishkovtsy,
Khotin, Bessarabia, Russian Empire. I only see Church records filmed by
LDS for this period and the new Bessarabia SIG does not indicate anything
else exists. Can anyone advise me if that is not the case or other records
survive that might shed light on someone born there 1882 who left circa
1914 or if the Church records would have any value for this search?
