Re: Romanenko Uzed #ukraine

Hi June,

I never heard of Romanenko uezd in Bessarabia and I am wondering if
they really meant Jewish agricultural colony of Romanovka. The colony
was founded in 1849 on the land owned by F. Romanenko. It was part of
the experiment of the Russian Empire government to get Jews accustomed
to farming. The Jewish colony Romanovka (the original name -
Romanenko) had 118 Jewish families. Among the first settlers were Leib
Goldenshteyn, A.Eldelman, L. Burman, V.Plachansky, Gunts Tsukovich,
Price Teytelman and others. I hope that helps.

Yitzhak (Isaac in English).

Polish spelling rules would pronounce that as "ish-ko". (Hungarian
would spell it "izsko", and pronounce it "izh-ko".)

Is anyone familiar with the name Iszko. I assume it's a diminutive for
something, but I can't find the answer online.

KWATLENER ? #general

Yonatan Ben-Ari

According to a handwritten "Yichus Brief" written by a long deceased
relative, my great great grandmother's name was Feige KWATLENER. In
all the sources I come across I've never seen this name before. Has
anyone (besides the Jerusalem SCHECHTER family) come have this name on
their tree? Was Kwatlen a place that she may have come from? If so
where is it?

TIA

Shabbat Shalom

Hi,

Iskovic (Iskovicz, Iskowicz, Itzkovich, etc.) means "Son of Issac", yes?

So "Iszko" is as Connie mentioned, and probably Hungarian-spelling, but
I know sometimes a diminutive was based on a surname. Are there Ickovic
people in your Tree?

Gary,

You didn't say what sort of information you were seeking. Location?
History? Vital records? Cadastral maps?

Bukovina genealogical resources summarized here:

There are no Jewish vital records available for Stanesti that I'm
aware of. But perhaps others will know.

Bunica mea, cea pe care o vezi in acea fotografie, realizata probabil,
