Hi Zev,

What was your late mother's surname? Keeping of metrical books divided by
confession ended in Romania in 1929, however all metrical books until WW2 and
even later are available with the Czernowitz Regional Archives:

Shana Tova!

I have been looking at the Metrical Books of the Czernowitz Jewish
community through the Family Search site.

My late mother Rosa was born in Czernowitz on December 31, 1920, but
there is no record of the birth on the relevant pages of birth
records. Could anyone with experience of these records advise me why
this might be? I am certain about the date. Could it be that some
families did not record births for some reason? Are there other
sources for births in Czernowitz during those years? I'm also looking
for marriage and birth records in Czernowitz in the 1930s.

Many thanks.

Botosani Photos #romania

Hi
I am looking to see if anyone knows where I may find photos of Botosani >from the
late 1800s or early 1900s. My family had a large bakery in Botosani which is
what I am looking for. The name could have been under Baetu or Zumer as I do
not know the name of the bakery

Greetings. I am trying to resolve the parentage of Hannah BLONDER,
born Chane Luchansky in Koshevata, Ukraine. She was born about 1861
and died in New York 11 May 1929. I believe her father was Shmul Luchansky,
but that name was not unique in Koshevata. A photograph of Hannah BLONDER's
gravestone with a Hebrew inscription could resolve the ambiguity.

Hannah BLONDER is buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, Queens
County, New York in Block R, section 5, line 1, grave 22 (R-5-1-22).
Her gravesite was provided by the Kushowater burial society.

I would be grateful for a photograph of any grave markers.

Dear Genners,

Phillip Moravcik raised an interesting issue of real estate sales -
written in so called Grundbuecher. That is usually a treasure for
genealogists today becasuse it also show who bought it or inherited it
from whom - example at : http://toledot.org/hauser.html
For Suchomasty one shall ask the staff at Natl. archives in
Prague-Chodovec. They have Grundbucher of Suchomasty Estate
inventory no. 92 signature B81 Pozemková kniha 1746-1795
inventory no. 93 signature B82 Pozemková kniha 1798-1850

more than one surname in familiant record #austria-czech

morav@...

Hi.

I have a familiant record for an ancestor which has one man's name at
the top but then it switches in the next generation to a different
name. There is a notation next to the first man's name - something
like "unbelaut" which I'm guessing means without heir. Can anyone
confirm this for me?

The record in question can be seen at:

http://www.badatelna.eu/fond/2098/reprodukce/?zaznamId=401593&reproId=584161

Thanks!

Virginia assistance #general

Trudy Barch

Hi friends,
I have spent the day researching one family. Found a lot of information
but..stuck in Virginia.
Richard E. Rittenberg was born September 18, 1925 in New York. He died
November 6, 2011 where unknown. FindAGrave gave date but nothing else. He
is not buried next to his wife.
Wife 1 Joyce (divorced) lived in California and died there April 15, 1986.
Wife 2 Helgard lived in Virginia and died there September 11, 2018 as a
widow. Hers was the only obituary I could find. I even called the funeral
home. She is resting at Sherwood Cemetery in Salem, Virginia. The obituary
was in the Roanoke Times. Richard is not at that cemetery.
Question 1 - Is Salem and McLean close to Roanoke?
Question 2 - Does Sherwood Cemetery have a Jewish section?
Question 3 - any other suggestions where I may look for an obituary (if
there was one) and/or cemetery?
Thank you. Happy and healthy New Year. Hope you have an easy fast.
Trudy Barch, Florida

(France) France Rejects Bill to Legalize Consumer DNA Tests #dna

Jan Meisels Allen

Do it yourself DNA testing has been banned in France since 1994 under the law of bioethics (loi de bioetiques). The only way you can take a DNA test legally is by getting medical approval or a court order allowing you to undergo one.

Anyone who breaks the law faces a fine of up to €3,750. A poll taken in August 2018 revealed that 78 percent of respondents wanted France to lift the ban on DNA tests.  (https://www.thelocal.fr/20181220/french-ban-on-dna-testing-cant-stop-the-craze).

On October 4, 2019 the Assemblée  Nationale rejected amendments in favor of legalizing genealogical DNA tests as part of Section 10 of the bioethics law. They went further than rejecting the amendment by adopting a formal prohibition on advertising for “recreational” genetic testing. The government said the existing law already allowed for the ban on television commercials or online, but the members of the Assemblé Nationale rejected the proposal.  According to an article in La revue francaise de Généalogie, it was the TV spots broadcast by MyHeritage that were the “line of fire”.
