JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

The search for passenger manifests in London is not too simple! Try their website first: http://www.pro.gov.uk/ The passenger manifests are filed year by year, then by port. They are not indexed. There is a book of ships names etc, which might help you. Try one of the info files on Jewishgen (think the book is Morton-Allen?). If you know the year, can guess the port correctly, and are prepared to sift through the boxes of manifests, there is a possibility of success. good luck & best wishes Harvey Hello Harvey:MODERATOR NOTE: You can find a list of JewishGen InfoFiles at http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/

Translation Needed for Yiddish or Russian 3 Words

Dear GENers,
There are 3 other words that are confusing me >from the diary of our distant ancestor. This diary was probably written in Russian around 1900 in Berdichev. There are also Yiddish words in it. It contains many explanations of Jewish customs >from the time that are most interesting. The first word is "kustarnichestvu" and I'm including the context below in case it might be helpful: "Accustomed to kustarnichestvu, an easy home trade where they could freely exploit somebody else's labor, mostly teenagers..." The second confusing word is "podpevatelyami" and the context is: "once more fuelling with hate against themselves and against all Jews the ruling circus (authorities) with anti-Semitism, the compulsive reactionary-podpevatelyami" The third word is "kazuistika" and the context is: "And a simple calculateless story/tale would tell much more to my child's heart than kazuistika of the Eastern fanatics." 1930 Census - married but not at "home"
#general
jeremy frankel
Dear Genners,
I have a potentially frustrating puzzle I wonder if anyone else has come across in the 1930 census. Specifically, I am researching Brooklyn, NY, and this may be limited to the enumerator for the area I am researching. The enumerator was a Harry FINKELSTEIN and the Enumeration District was #1454. The family I am researching, Abraham and Fanny BARNETT, were living at 3734 Laurel Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. They are listed with their two grown-up children. The daughter, Lillian, is listed as 27 years, married at 18 and status as married. Her brother, Lawrence, is 24, married at 15 (a mistake, it should be 20) and also listed as married. In the case of Lillian, she is listed under her maiden, not married name. In both cases I am stymied as I cannot find their families in the 1930 census! The closest city directory was issued in 1933 and while Lawrence is listed at a different address, I checked the 1930 census but his family was not living there in 1930. This is not an isolated case - at least on this page. A few doors away at 3745, one finds the ABELSON family; Max and Ginnie, along with their eight grown-up children. There are five daughters and three sons. The youngest is 25 and all are married (one for sixteen years!) save the youngest daughter who is 30 years old. None of the children's families are listed, so one presumes that they all lived elsewhere. Again, all four married daughters are are listed under their maiden name! has anyone else come across this situation? Looking for Descendents of Wulff Joseph Wulff and Family
#scandinavia
Melissa Mensah <naatakyiwa@...>
Hello,
My name is Melissa. My father's name was Frantz Wulff-Tagoe. He was the descendant of a Danish Jewish Civil Servant named Wulff Joseph Carl WULFF, who settled in the Danish Colony, the Gold Coast, West Africa in the mid-1800's. I was told, he made the choice to remain in Ghana after the Danish Government refused to promote him because he was Jewish. He went on to marry a Ghanaian woman, and is buried at the family home in Accra. I have recenly been able to locate a living, Danish direct descendant of WJ Wulff and we are interested in learning more about the other Wulff family still living in Denmark. I understand some of our Danish relatives have visited the family home in Ghana. If you have any information you can share with us, we would be very grateful. Thank you Melissa Kankam

Searching Descendants of Max HELLMAN

I am posting this for cousins who are great grandchildren of
Max HELLMAN. Annie JACOBS, his wife, was my aunt. We believe Max came >from Latvia as the census taker wrote he was >from Riga. His parents were Samuel and Augusta HELLMAN. He was married to Annie JACOBS who was born in England and was the daughter of Joseph and Rachel JACOBS. Her family first migrated >from London to Baltimore, MD .Max & Annie migrated from New York or Baltimore to Atlanta, GA.Max had a sister whose name according to family lore was Mary Birkhan* and she lived in the Bronx, NY at one time. Mary's daughter was Gussie FRIEBERG. Gussie's daughter, Ruth, married a Dr. FOX. Gussie also had a son, Milton FRIEBERG. There was a Rabbi FRIEBERG in Bay Ridge in Brooklyn whose niece may have been related to the HELLMAN family. There are supposedly additional nieces of Max HELLMAN who once resided in the East New York area of Brooklyn. Max HELLMAN was born in 1862 and married Annie JACOBS 11/14/1886. He died in Atlanta, GA on 12/27/1935 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta. Facts >from his obituary were printed as follows: 1. He was a tailor who had emigrated >from Russia 2. He was prominent in local Jewish affairs. 3. Two daughters: Miss Frances HELLMAN and Mrs. (Leah) Nathan WOLFF (NYC) 4. 4 sons: Abraham Joseph ("Abe") HELLMAN of Chester, S.C.; Jacob J. Mathematics of genealogy
#general
Rich Lowenthal <richlowenthal@...>
The mathematics of genealogy means that if you go back far
enough, most of us are related to most historical personages, and the further back you go the greater the chances you're a direct descendant of a specific (fertile) person. In other words, there's nothing particularly notable about being a descendant of William the Conqueror. It is estimated that if you go back far enough, you will find you are related to around 5/6 of the people then living. For anyone whose family has been Jewish for any length of time, it's even more likely that you're related to famous Jews--most of us are probably related to Rashi, Josephus, Maimonides, Philo, and Judah Maccabee, not to mention David. You'll find more information on this in "The Mountain of Names: A History of the Human Family," by Alex Shoumatoff, a fascinating work for anyone interested in genealogy. - Rich Lowenthal
